D. A. Charles is a wife, mother and personal care provider by day, and enjoys writing into the wee hours of the night from her residence in the forest.

Dee’s roots began in nursing, but she found her passion providing Home and Community-based Care to individuals with disabilities and has done so for more than thirty-five years. D. A. enjoys the, sometimes challenging, scavenger hunt that is information and referral, and is involved in disability rights advocacy.

Dee has sprinkled real life disability issues throughout her writing to bring about disability awareness and maintains an information and referral website with links for agencies and organizations that provide goods and services for individuals who have disabilities, as well as current events that may interest the disability community.

While the characters she writes about are fictional, they are inspired by individuals who have left their footprints on her life.

I am a lifelong disability rights advocate. I am the director of a firm called Autistic Reality, and I am also the author of books of essays on disability, pop culture, fandom, and much more. I am also a professional pop culture critic, and write reviews for a number of sites. I also speak on disability representation at a number of conferences and conventions. In addition, I have at least fifteen disabilities myself.

I have had the immense pleasure of knowing DA Charles for several years now. I can attest that her devotion to the disability cause is absolutely pure, and comes from a very good perspective. That perspective is absolutely authentic, as Charles has disabilities herself, as do a number of her friends and loved ones. Not only that, but Charles has spent decades dedicated to improving the quality of life of the disabled population.

The goodwill and disability inclusion shows through in DA Charles’s powerful, moving writing. She depicts people with various different disabilities as human beings deserving of dignity. This is not just another love story. It is a story of trial by fire, perseverance, and victory in the face of adverse circumstances. However, for those of you expecting stereotypical feel-good stories, Charles’s narrative is incredibly realistic, and draws upon her decades of experience with and as part of the disability community. Her characters laugh and cry, love and celebrate, and remind us of ourselves. This is a story of human characters who happen to live with disability. This is a story that, in my opinion, has not yet been told. Now, it is here!

DA Charles has labored on this book and other creative works for years with much love and dedication. The quality of Charles’s work is absolutely sterling, and her writing will move you and help you become a better person. For quite some time, she did not believe she would ever see this work published. The lesson is this: never let anyone or anything keep you from your dreams. Charles’s dreams have become reality, and so can yours.

As a health care professional I encourage all of my friends in the healthcare field to consider reading this book. We all need an escape sometimes and what better way than with what we know best?
Whenever we tell people that they can follow their dreams irregardless of what challenges need to be overcome, do we ever really think about how that happens? What if a disability is involved? We strive to empower and we commit to delivering a plan that can help each person accomplish their goals, yet we are rarely involve ourselves in their entire journey or can even envision all of what it will entail. Life goes on and sometimes love enters in as well. We are reminded that a life worth saving is a journey worth taking. For those not in the health care profession, you will find this book to be an eye opener about how living a life with physical limitations, leads not only to self discovery but advocacy for quality of life, independence, friendship and love. You will realize that shattered is not broken and that anyone can grow a pair of wings and learn to fly whether you walk or roll forward.

An emotional, realistic look into life with disabilities. The first 76% of the book is about Stephen and his struggles with living with a sudden disability as he adjusts to the changes and deals with his personal care, mobility issues, and personal relationships.
Finally we meet Abby and see how she deals with her disability. Her story felt a bit rushed after getting Stephen’s in so much detail. I wish we could have seen more of the two of them together. And the ending was pretty abrupt. I’m not a fan of big cliffhangers.

I really enjoyed this book. This is D.A. Charles' first book, and I am impressed. She has been able to write about individuals with disabilities believably, not washing over the obstacles they face but showing them as they truly are. It is obvious she knows the subject matter she is dealing with. This is something I have found missing in many books. From the very beginning I found myself drawn in to Steven's story, watching the evolution of both him and of those closest to him. I am looking forward to reading the rest of The Roll Models Saga.

5 BIG ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
This is the first book of D.A. Charles that I’ve had the pleasure to read & yes, it was an absolute pleasure to read.
The characters were well fleshed out, the world building was superb & the entire storyline had you quickly turning the page to find out what was coming next.
The characters were believable & quite “human” with their quirks, personalities & how they handled the ups & downs throughout the story.
I CAN! NOT! WAIT! for more Roll Models!! 💖💖💖💖

I finished reading this book a few days ago, but I needed some time to process all the story and information.
I confess that the information regarding people with disabilities was very important, as I never had contact with anyone with Steven's type of disability. I already ask for forgiveness in advance if my words are not adequate, but I really don't know anything about people with disabilities. I live in Brazil, and unfortunately here there is still a lot of prejudice against people with disabilities.
Now regarding this story, I have to say that I just loved Steven, Sophie, Logan, Abby, Luke. The characters are wonderful.
Much of this first book in the series is about Steven and how he views his new life with a disability, having to adapt to this new reality and how people see him. It is a long way until he stops feeling inferior because of his disability and manages to overcome the adversities that come his way. Over time, we see how he managed to adapt successfully and became a great doctor in his field.
Abigail Harris has her whole life planned, but when she wakes up on Christmas morning and needs to be taken to the hospital, she discovers that her life will change dramatically. Logan is the one who sees Abby when she arrives at the hospital and does everything he can to find out what she has, and counts on Steven's help to help her adapt to her new life. And the attraction that arose between them was very interesting to see, as it was a subtle and light thing.
I'm already looking forward to the next book in the series, to find out what's going to happen to these wonderful characters.
I highly recommend the reading.

This is definitely a story that I will highly recommend. I have been a huge fan of D.A. Charles writting for years and especially the original story. Now getting the more appreciated opportunity to read the published version is just amazing.

Shattered book #1 start really pulls you into details of how is truly all begins. We are getting into more details of Steven's transitioning into the new phase of his life right after the tragic accident and how he learns not only to adapt but live! I really enjoyed also reading more of not only Stevens challenges and his mind into things but also now his only family left you truly stepped up. The family strength is something I know very personally how much that matters with anyone with a disability. Logan and Sophie characters show amazing strength and determination just as much as Stevens. Having myself a sibling how is for the rest of his life wheelchair, needs 24/7 care, and much more, the sacrifice anyone makes is big. But doing it with not a doubt of what needs to be done is truly in itself extraordinary. Steven knows this too and he wants to do the same back by being able to live independently eventually.

I can not wait to purchase a hard copy to have forever with my favorites. Looking forward to more books of The Roll Models Saga from amazing talented and true D.A. Charles.

This is very different from books I’ve read before. The books tells the story of a young man on the cusp of adulthood, whose life is irrevocably altered in the blink of an eye. Suddenly an orphan and paralyzed, Steven Maxwell has to learn how to navigate life in this new capacity.

His aunt and uncle lovingly take him in and make every accommodation to help him. He has some obstacles to overcome, both physical and mental, both within himself as with his surroundings and other people, which I think the author described in a respectful and inspiring way. Steven has a wonderful support system, which allows him to thrive despite – or perhaps even thanks to – his disability.

The author has drawn heavily from personal experience and those of people she knows or knew. This lends the story a wonderful sense of realism, as the areas and locations, as well as the characters come to life. The story lends itself to shedding a light on the disability community, as well as laws and regulations in this respect from the 90s onward. Although a lot of information is provided, it doesn’t feel like an information dump. Steven is new to disability, so as he navigates this new world, so do we with him. I think this is a wonderful way of promoting awareness.

The book ends on quite the dramatic cliffhanger, which makes me eager to see what the author has in store for us and these characters.

This is the first published book by D.A. Charles and she kicked it out of the park. This book is one everyone should read, the storyline is not what most people read but that's exactly what makes it unique and perfect. When people try to overcome a change in their lives is difficult, add that a disability that turned it upside down not just for the person but for everyone involved around that person, their family. That change entails not only physical therapy but mental and emotional support as well. This book touches everything from someone that has been working with it all, so yes this story is as real as it can get. Find yourself immerse in the situation of people that have experienced and overcome all sort of circumstances. Give this book a go, a story like no other been told from the authors real life experience as she has dedicated years helping, with beautiful words, this is certainly a 5 star book everyone needs to read!

I applaud the author for championing the subject matter of a main character with a disability. She handled it with care and grace while educating her readers on the finer points of moving through life with as much gusto as possible. Her characters were very believable and likable, even when Steven, the main character was being a “brat”. At the beginning of the story he was only 18, so his “brattiness” was understandable under the circumstances. It was nice to see him progress beyond that and become a powerhouse in advocacy. I look forward to his continued journey, especially after the cliffhanger ending of this first book in the series.

I sincerely wish I could give this book higher marks, but sadly, the lackluster editing continually drew me out of the story. And as an editor, I had a hard time getting past all the punctuation and grammar issues. Hopefully, the author can get an editor on board for her future books. I would hate to see her lose readers due to this oversight.

I feel like I have been waiting for this book to be published and released for a lifetime and I can’t express just how glad I am that it finally came to fruition. Having been a part of the story as it grew to now, I can only say that it got better with age.
So many of us do not understand what the world really looks like for those with disabilities. Myself included. But this book is one of those life view altering ones that make you really think and consider a different point of view.
D A Charles has done an amazing job introducing us to characters that face and continue to face many of life’s challenges without being over technical but not sugar coating it either. The bravery and strength of character these characters display (not just Steven and Abby but all the characters we see through the story) is what I pray I would experience if I ever experience a life altering challenge such as these.
This first book is the saga focused mostly on Steven through introduction Abby. I look forward to reading more of her story and can’t wait for their worlds to collide again. The story left me wanting more and asking - when does the next book come out, as this one got me hook, line, and sinker.

Shattered by D.A. Charles follows Steven Maxwell on a journey from tragedy and despair to acceptance and independence. After losing his parents in an automobile accident that also paralyzed him, Steven must learn to adapt to the altered world he's been thrust into, and to realize that this isn't the end--it's just a different path.

D.A Charles does an amazing job educating the reader on all aspects of living with a profound disability as Steven is learning them, and she provides an insider's perspective of both the difficulties and the triumphs of living life in a wheelchair. You'll fall in love with Steven as he goes through his early ups and downs, and cheer for him as he gains independence and confidence. A delightful read if you're looking for an engaging story with well fleshed-out characters. It will inspire you to believe that anything is possible--you just might have to take a different path than you expected.

Honestly, I am so thrilled that I can finally read this!
It gave everything it promised and more. Having read this tale in its infancy as a fanfic and now to read again as a wholly original and fully fledged novel fills me with so much joy.
Steven’s character is so well finished and the full rollercoaster of his ordeal has been orchestrated to perfection. Not only is this book so well written, but the frank and un-sugar coated realities of life with a disability are wonderfully portrayed.
Abigail’s anguish and subsequent acceptance and determination are so inspiring and wonderful, I can’t wait to get more of a look into her life.
I’m so thrilled with this instalment and I know I will be hanging on the edge of ever teaser post until the next is released! Simply wonderful.

This is powerful story, this story is a journey through the lives of people so real, some you wish you could know, others you would need to smack. The characters are multi dimensional and the story line keeps you engaged. Shattered is a story that shows you that people with disabilities can live very fulfilled lives.
This is a 5 star read.
I recommend it to all.

Highly recommend!!

What a phenomenal read. This book shattered my heart and put it back together. The way the author brought these characters and the world together was brilliant. It was so nice to see that disabilities don't define who you are and you can be more than what life hands to you. You don't need to be held back by your disability no matter what it is. Grow from what you can and mature in becoming who you want to be.

The title says it all Steven, our mc's life is shattered at eighteen physically and emotionally. This compassionate look at life with a disability is compelling and heart-wrenching And nothing was off the table as Steven faces everyday struggles and triumphs. The people, especially his Aunt Sophie and Uncle (dr.) Logan in his life are equally interesting as they deal with "parenting" a young adult with a disability. Towards the end we are introduced to a new character Abby who obviously is going to play a big role in the next book-which of course I look forward to reading. If it wasn't for the cliff hanger of an ending this would have been a 5 star read for me.

What an amazing read this book was. I loved the story of how Steven overcame so much and followed his dream to become a doctor. The love and support his family showed was beautiful. They sacrificed so much to make sure their "son" had a normal life. I enjoyed the story of Abby, too, and how meeting Steven changed her life as well. I had actually hoped they had ended up together. I love how this book shows how important it is to treat people with disabilities just like everyone else. The books ending pulled at my heart strings, but at least Steven went to be home with his mother and father. #bookloungerreviewteam

This book was an interesting read. There was so much info that the author included that I never relized a person that has a life changing accident has to face. For me this read more like a documentary than a novel but that is just my opinion.

The Roll Models Saga—A journey where even the smallest things in life cannot be taken for granted.

Eighteenth birthdays only occur once in one’s lifetime and they are supposed to be life changing—fate had a grim sense of humor when she attended Steven’s Maxwell’s party. Irrevocably shattered when a devastating accident changes every aspect of his family dynamic, Steven Maxwell must salvage what’s left of his life; fitting the pieces into a puzzle that not only leads him through recovery, but to discovery, as well.

Abigail Harris has her life all planned out in perfect compartments. Her job. Her family. Her social life. Abby doesn’t have room in her life for the unexpected. She doesn’t have room in her tiny apartment either—especially when not one, but both of her long-divorced parents end up on her threshold within hours of each other.

Enter Abby’s Christmas Eve nightmare, turned medical mystery—the young educator is shattered when her health takes an unexpected detour. Cue providence stepping in and sending an ambassador with a disability who welcomes Abby into his world and shows her—a life with physical limitations is still a life with quality.

The Roll Models Saga features dynamic and realistic characters with disabilities, portraying each with respect and realism, complete with flaws and vulnerabilities, each navigating to fulfill their dreams and desires.

ouch. Right in the feels.

Amazing look into the history of the Americans with Disabilities Act and the people it affected and continue to affect. There have been parts of this law that have been taken away and more parts that are threatened. Let’s keep fighting the good fight and keep the ADA strong.
Amazing characters. Amazing story. Lots of tears. And ouch. My heart breaking.

This is the author's first book and I look forward to reading more from her. I truly appreciate how the information presented allows the reader to understand WHY a person wants to live a productive life no matter what happens to them. People with disabilities are all around us. Everyone knows someone with "something", how often do we consider what it takes for a person to find transportation, accessibility in public places and more importantly, what it takes to live an independent life if one needs full time care? This long story covers how Steven's life was changed after an accident when he was a child. We learn what helps him and how he continues on with his education. There are groups, places and plenty of resources for those who know where to find guidance. ( Current resources are listed in the book. ) I loved all the positive moments and understood all the frustrating moments that led to breakthroughs! There is a powerful message within these pages. Advocacy is important, whether is comes from loved ones, our friends, our caregivers, health professionals or even strangers if they have lived though a similar situation. 4 STARS

Unique, realistic, and well told. A story about dealing with cruel and harsh life happenings, struggles, and challenges but also a story of how one learns how to cope and overcome. A story of love, hope, courage, and determination. A story that shows how to follow your dreams no matter what life throws at you. A story that involves life being turned upside down and meeting it head-on and not letting it pull you and others around you down. A story that made me more aware. A story like none I have ever read before and one that touched me deeply.
