Despite a no-nonsense background as a West Point graduate and U.S. Army officer, Caro Carson has always treasured the happily-ever-after of a good romance novel. After her military service, she worked in the healthcare industry with a Fortune 100 company, talking science with doctors who were rarely handsome bachelor Texans like the doctors in her books. Now a RITA™-award-winning and USA Today bestselling author, Caro is delighted to be living her own happily-ever-after with her husband (who is a handsome Texan) and their two children. They live in Florida, a location which has saved the coaster-loving theme park fanatics a fortune on plane tickets.

The Majors’ Holiday Hideaway by Caro Carson is my final Christmas novel this season. India Woods is a major in the US Army based in Brussels at NATO. She and her American army friend Helen decide to swap houses over the holidays, so India gets to return to her home base of Fort Hood, Texas for a couple weeks. While there she meets Aiden Nord [1], also an Army major. The two are attracted to one another instantly and after the requisite flirting they are in bed, having the most incredible sex for four days. Yet Aiden has a secret, and four days into their relationship he decides to tell India what it is: he is a widower with twin four-year-old girls.

Why wouldn’t he reveal this part of himself to India sooner? Aiden was worried that whenever women find out he is a widower and a father, they always have an about-face and from that point on treat him differently. His internal monologues reproduced dialogue from past relationships, where women he had only begun dating turned into completely different people after learning about his life situation. Since what Aiden had going on with India was so passionate and special, he didn’t want to ruin his brief weeklong holiday fling by telling her the truth about himself. However when he realized he was falling in love with her–after only four days–he felt he needed to tell her.

India lost credibility when she revealed to Aiden that she refused to date fathers because she didn’t want to play second fiddle to their children. By coincidence she revealed this to him just before Aiden was going to tell her about his own family situation. Where did this India’s Rule of Dating come from? We never had any inkling about how much she loathed children until the two encountered a busy family at a McDonald’s. So all of a sudden India goes from being a lovely young woman enamoured with such a hunk as Aiden to someone who would soon detest the man she’s sleeping with–if she ever discovered the truth about him.

The final quarter of the novel has India in mental anguish about what to do when she finds out on Christmas Eve night that Aiden is a widower with two small children. I believe that most women would accept the situation, yet question why the man didn’t bring it up sooner. But not India; she is always rationalizing why it is in her best interest, according to this bogus rule she invented, to dump him. She gets up to leave, then comes back, pulls her hair out in indecision and–get this–is always biting her damn lower lip, just like Erika in An Alaskan Christmas. What an overused and meaningless metaphor for mental turmoil. But after chewing the skin of her lips off, India has a change of heart. Oh please.

This pocketbook only had 219 pages, so action and drama–and the happy Christmastime solutions–had to happen at a rapid clip, and Carson wrote so that I sped through the densely-packed pages. Text pleasingly filled each page, with minimal spacing for margins, headers or footers. The 219 pages could easily have packed a hardcover at twice the length. The happy ending was not solved instantaneously with a magic wand, as there was a bit of work involved to make the couple able to work and live together.

[1] The back cover embarrassingly misspells his name as Aidan.

Great new romance. I liked that this was very different from other romances I have read and enjoyed the fact that the man is a single father and how the future relationship of this couple needs to involve the children. Great story. Will read more of Caro Carson.

I received this book at a library giveaway & love it! A sweet story about a Major in the Army who is in an unhappy relationship and feels trapped in her career. She's a language specialist who is very important to the military and stationed in Germany. She swaps homes for a week with a friend in Texas, for a Christmas getaway. Little does she know her friend's handsome neighbor is going to walk in to her life and provide a week of hot romance!

Fun book to read during the holidays or anytime. First book I've read by this author, but I will read more!
