A celebration of what makes us all unique and special. From unique traits that make us look or feel a bit different, to different abilities, this book is for everyone! It can help us realize that no matter our abilities, strengths or weaknesses, each of us is precious, rare, and beautiful!
This wonderful book can open dialogue about uniqueness, inclusion, and the hard things that many children are dealing with. It can also help us all learn to be accepting of others who are a bit different and realize just how similar we really are.
This book touches on traits such as hair and eye color, as well as different abilities and even a few illnesses--things such as being wheelchair bound, having autism or ADHD/ADD, limb differences, Vitiligo, cancer, diabetes, Down syndrome, blindness, etc, but does it in such a way that puts the focus on the individual, unique child and will help us all to realize that we are all basically unicorns!
It is a beautifully illustrated children's book in poetry form that will surely be a treasure for your family.

Excellent book about diversity for children. I like how there is a section at the end with information about each issue/condition/disability mentioned in the story. The children are diverse. Issues range from autism to physical disabilities to being too tall or too short.
What stopped the rating from being higher is that one disability is done in a somewhat confusing way (I thought the child was blind, but it was more about how information is processed). This is made clear in the end.
Rarely does one come across a book that is delightful and sensitive at the same time. Without being preachy or sentimental, Melanie brings out the uniqueness of each child who is special, just like a unicorn. The rhymes make the reading easy and the illustrations are so appealing. Indeed, the book is unique.
I really enjoyed this sweet book that focuses on the special parts of being different. I especially love the traits descriptions at the end of the book that help parents discuss these differences with their children.
This is a wonderful book that teaches diversity in a simple way. It reiterates that each one of us is not perfect and we are unique in our own way. The illustrations are simple and depict a lot about the characters.
I absolutely loved the fact that at the end of the story there was a line or two explaining about each character and how they were unique. I would recommend this book to kids of ages 4 to 8. 😊
I absolutely loved this book. I actually teared up while reading it. I could feel the author's passion about the message she was conveying in her writing. The book is bright and colorful. This book is so empowering for all people. What is different about us makes up uniquely special. We may all be different but we all have something to contribute to society. I can't wait to share this book with my grandgifts and parents that I know will inspire hope in the next generation.
This book is so unique and special—it is a unicorn among children’s books! Readers will learn about acceptance and feel empowered while ring entertained by lovely illustrations and fun rhyming and repeating verses. This is sure to be loved by many young readers at storytimes and bedtimes!
Who doesn’t love a unicorn! Great book about being unique, having differences and special characteristics. Even includes information on genetic traits in the back great book.
We are more alike than different. This book shows that everyone has something positive to offer the world and that we are all unique and exactly the way we were meant to be. Sweet, happy and upbeat story.
This author did an amazing job highlighting disabilities, but not focusing on them. Instead, she helps children understand that we are all special because of our differences and even disabilities. I love this sweet book.
I'm all for diversity and this book brings it in spades. I cannot recommend this book enough !! I just love how the author has taken the concept of a unicorn and applied it to every child of different walks of life. LOVE !!!
I love how this book touches on everyone’s differences. This type of book will make any child feel special. I love the message and I love the information in the back of the book as well. Very important for children to understand everyone’s differences.
A quick look at I’m Basically a Unicorn by Melanie Hawkins.
A book with excellent messages for young kids. It acknowledges the differences of folks and celebrates them while using the imagery of a unicorn to show how these differences are amazing.
It is very uplifting and seeing the unicorn reflect all the different children is an excellent use of imagery. I would certainly recommend it.
I liked this book and wold recommend it to someone with children. If children learn to accept diversity maybe there would be less bullying. This book is a good start.
This book teaches children the are each unique and special and great just as they are. It is a very positive and uplifting book everyone should read at least once. Rhymes plus repetitive phrases make it flow well.
