Good Clean Beauty: Create over 75 Super Simple Beauty and Skin Recipes from Common Kitchen Pantry Ingredients

Rate this book
Teen sisterpreneurs™ Isabel and Caroline Bercaw—included on the 2019 Forbes 30 Under 30 list for trailblazers in retail and ecommerce for their multimillion-dollar company Da Bomb® Bath Fizzers and authors of Fizz Boom Bath—give readers over 75 super simple beauty and skin care recipes made from common ingredients found in the kitchen pantry.

Tired of endlessly searching for safe and natural makeup lines free of harsh, chemical-laden ingredients, Caroline and Isabel decided to create their own natural makeup line. Good Clean Beauty includes their thoroughly researched recipes, perfect for those looking for natural and clean alternatives. Using only natural ingredients such as cocoa butter, almond oil, essential oils, and oats, you'll know exactly what you're putting onto your face and body. If you have allergies or sensitive skin, you'll appreciate and benefit from the non-toxic makeup ingredients.

Divided into two parts—makeup and skin care—both sections utilize common items readily available in the kitchen and bathroom that make luxurious scrubs, effective exfoliators, revitalizing face masks, long-lasting foundation, bright eye shadows, shiny lip glosses, and soothing lotions. Also included is a section teaching the basic methods of applying makeup, such as foundation, blush, lipstick, and eye shadow—making it a perfect guide if you are just beginning to learn how to wear makeup. Each ingredient is presented with a short overview of its natural properties and a full explanation on its use and application. The healing and therapeutic properties of the ingredients, such as charcoal, arrowroot powder, and nutmeg, are broken down and reviewed.

Whether you're looking for the perfect DIY gift for friends and family, a resource for spa party or sleepover activities, or creative projects for yourself, Good Clean Beauty has it covered.

For Caroline and Isabel Bercaw, it was when they were 10 and 11 years old. During the summer of 2011, their parents picked up $25 worth of ingredients to make homemade bath bombs as a science experiment. Little did their parents know that they were making a business investment that would turn into a multi-million dollar business.

Caroline and Isabel decided to make enough to sell at a local art fair near their home in Minneapolis. After three months of trial and error, they made about 150 bath bombs. When the art fair arrived, they sold their entire stock the first day.

Today Caroline and Isabel's parents have quit their day jobs to run DaBomb Fizzers, a company that they say sells 500,000 bath bombs a month and employs more than 100 people. Each bath bomb has a surprise inside such as charms or coins and can be found at stores such as Target and Ulta.

Wow. It's hard to know where to start with the issues with this book that sounds good in principle but comes up pretty short. The premise is that two young sisters (now 17 and 19) who says they created a multi-million dollar company out of selling homemade beauty products as young teenagers have assembled 75 recipes for homemade makeup, hair products, masks and other beauty treatments. That sounds great and I was happy to get a digital ARC to review. But...

Some of my concerns:

1. The authors never once discuss the safety of these products. There's not even commonsense information like how long they last, how to store them, and how to know if they go bad. Most people who have ever made homemade beauty products know that you often have to store them in the fridge, make very small amounts, etc. because they tend to spoil easily but there's no talk at all about this issue. If you're putting a homemade eyeliner right next to your eyes, this is pretty important information.

2. You have to buy a variety of ingredients that add up in cost to make most of the products, so unless you're going into business you should expect to spend more than if you just bought these products off etsy or from some small scale trendy supplier.

3. The recipes are all pretty standard ones you can find for free on the net. For example, the mascara is basically this one: https://natural-alternative-therapies... (same ingredients, slightly different measurements and instructions).

4. There are lots of some kinds of recipes, like a ton of eye shadows (mostly just loose powders colored with various colors of mica powders and then lots of other ingredients) but no lipsticks, for instance.

5. There are no pictures AT ALL of any of these products being used by a human being. There are colorful photos of the powders spread on a table next to cutesy objects like plastic Eiffel towers, but there aren't even very many photos that actually show you what the product is supposed to look like in a container, much less how it will look on your face. When I looked up recipes for natural eyeliner and mascara that used similar recipes, the comments were full of people who said it went on badly, ran down their faces, didn't perform well, clumped, etc. If you want to convince me that this is a good recipe for an eyeliner or mascara, show me what it looks like on someone's eyes.

6. I would be really concerned about putting things like this near my eyes. Coconut oil always burns my eyes, for instance, even though it's an ingredient in most of the eye recipes, and considering how abrasive charcoal powder is, I don't think I want that in my eyeliner or mascara.

7. An internet search gave more information on the sisters, whose business is colorful fizzy bath bombs. It does look like they have an impressive business selling these, but that does not make them experts in providing safe and healthy natural makeup.

Sorry, but this isn't one I'll be recommending.

I read a temporary digital ARC of this book for the purpose of review.

Full Review on The Candid Cover

Good Clean Beauty by Caroline and Isabel Bercaw is a book full of beautiful images and lots of ideas to create your own beauty products. It is written with a fun, upbeat style that will appeal to younger readers. While the book has quite a few recipes and tips for making many beauty items, such as face masks and eye shadow, it is one that I recommend with caution.

The book is a comprehensive collection of simple homemade beauty recipes that can easily be made by tweens. Good Clean Beauty starts off with detailed explanations of the benefits of many natural ingredients and supplies that are used in the guide. It is then broken up into sections that focus on different types of beauty products. The contents include:

Introduction
Ingredients and Benefits
Supplies and Equipment
Hair
Body
Makeup
Eyeshadows
Skin Care
About the Authors
❀ INITIAL COST FACTOR IS HIGH

If you have made products like these before, it is likely that you already own some of the ingredients and supplies. However, if this is your first time creating beauty products, there is a significant cost in acquiring the tools and ingredients. Therefore, if this is not something that you are wanting to commit to, it is not a cost-effective way to obtain natural products for your body.

❀ A LACK OF SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS

While I appreciate the layout and the simple instructions in Good Clean Beauty, I do agree with many other reviewers that there is a lack of safety information in this book. When making products for your skin, it is important to be aware of what the risks are for certain ingredients and their combinations. Also, as the ingredients are natural, knowing how to store them and for how long is another key aspect that has been ignored in the book.

❀ LOTS OF GREAT IDEAS

If you are looking to create your own skincare and beauty items, Good Clean Beauty by Caroline and Isabel Bercaw is one book to look for. There are a multitude of recipes in this easy to follow instruction book. That being said, this is one beauty book that should be used cautiously.

I received a copy of this book to read in exchange for an honest review via netgalley and the publishers.

This book sounded so good but unfortunately each time I downloaded my advanced reader copy of it it showed me everything except the ingredients needed to make the beauty products on each page so I'm unable to leave a proper review.

Originally published on my blog: Nonstop Reader.

Good Clean Beauty is a tutorial and recipe guide to making beauty products at home with (fairly) easily sourced natural ingredients by sisterpreneurs Caroline & Isabel Bercaw. Due out 17th March 2020 from Quarto on their Rock Point imprint, it's 144 pages and will be available in hardcover format.

The writing and formatting are young, upbeat, and positive. The recipes are clean and appealing and made with safe ingredients. The book starts with an alphabetical glossary introduction of supplies and ingredients from activated charcoal to witch hazel. The rest of the book's recipes are grouped roughly by category: hair, body, makeup, eye shadow, and skin care.

Each recipe includes a short description, ingredients (both American standard and metric measurements included - yay!) listed bullet style in a sidebar, and step by step directions. Special tips and usage info are included, highlighted with a sidebar or asterisk.

The chapters are tab highlighted so that recipes can be easily found by using the page margins to find chapters quickly. There's an ingredient index, but the recipe index is not included, and is found in the table of contents. There are no resources or links lists for ingredients, but most everything can be found from online retailers. My only quibble with the book (and it's almost universal with the newer crop of cookery and lifestyle books the last year) is that there are very few photos of finished items and recipe preparation. None of the recipes are extremely complex, so the omission isn't terribly crippling and there are -some- illustrations. The photos which are included are clear and appealing and are in color (see cover photo for an example).

This would make a good choice for young/tween/teenagers who are interested in making their own cosmetics and beauty products for themselves or gift giving.

Four stars.

I was given an arc by Netgalley.
This book gave good advice in how tro produce different beauty products that are at least a little bit less toxic and synthetic thant the commercial ones. And while I appeciate some of the recipes, I think that not all the materiales were that affordable or easy to get your hands on. It's said you can do it with btw you have in your pantry, but there were very few recipes that actually proved that point. With the rest you had to buy different kinds of special oils that are rather pricey.

I really enjoyed this book and I loved the large variety of recipes. I feel this is a great book to have in your collection if you are interested in DIY beauty and skin care. This book has very detailed instructions and a list the natural materials used in each recipe.

Then recipes include moisturizers, face masks, and makeup. There is a good variety of recipes to try. This is a fun book with beautiful photos. However, unfortunately none show pictures of the product on natural skin.

I also could not find any info on proper storage or shelf life of the recipes so I am lowering my rating simply because I feel this is critical information for home made beauty products. With the addition of the information on storage and shelf life, and info on safety or precautions for the ingredients I would give this book a five (5).

I have many books on the subject and that information has always been included. Most other books require refrigeration or making new product often. But otherwise I love the book and enjoyed the variety of recipes. I received this book from NetGalley for an honest review.

I recently started having allergic reactions to darn near anything I put on my upper eye lids. They puffed up, felt heavy, turned red, the skin got dry, it burned & was itchy. My eyes watered & hurt. I'd get my eyes to heal & slowly reintroduce one natural commercial eye product at a time for several days & then bam! back to swollen eye lids. I know I can live without makeup, but I am like many women who feel more confident with my eyes done up. I can forgo anything else, but not my eye makeup. I already make many of my own organic hand butters, salves, & lip balms, & decided to see if I could make my own organic makeup as well.

After finishing this book, I am getting the most use out of the eye makeup aka Eye Shadows section, & the Makeup section - mostly for the blushes & highlighters. The intro. in the book states that this is for home use. No preservatives or other steps that are required for commercial use which is highly regulated (so don't use these recipes to sell stuff).

Overall, I am very glad I took a chance on this book. I am happy for the simple recipes using totally natural ingredients. I have autoimmune disease & I believe my newly developed eye problems are a result of this. I have to be very careful about everything that I am exposed to. This book has given me many fresh ideas & options to try out sans preservatives & other ingredients in commercial products that can cause a negative reaction.

I received a copy of this book through the Amazon Vine program in exchange for an honest review.

This is a surprisingly thorough book!

There's lots of recipes for hair treatments, face masks, and other beauty ideas. While I like the idea of making things like lotion and makeup at home some of these recipes call for less than common ingredients like micah powder and other coloring materials.

Based on the makeup tones and hair suggestions I'm also going to assume that this information is geared toward white women, and those of us with different skin tones or hair textures are out of luck.

Overall it's an informative look on making beauty materials from scratch.

I just reviewed Good Clean Beauty by Caroline Bercaw; Isabel Bercaw. #GoodCleanBeauty #NetGalley

Quite amazed with this book. Since opening the ingredients page, found an extensive list of organic materials we can use, some even got pictures on them, which am so grateful to the authors.

And from hair, to body, make-up (even got a chapter of eye shadows *wink*), skincare ....... this book got it all. If you're a health conscious person, or want to start a DIY cosmetics as hobby, or even can't find ingredients that suit you, you can purchase this book and try their methods!

I was really surprised by this book. I’ve read similar books to this (or so I thought), whereby you make your own toiletries. But this went well above my expectations. I thought the raw ingredients would be a bit ‘out there’ being that natural ingredients were being used. I couldn’t have got it more wrong, whilst it was a mix of everyday things like coffee, it also had things like liquid castile soap and shea butter. Which I notice are readily available. The instructions themselves are so simple and straight forward. To be honest it would probably easier just to make some than get some from the shops! Each recipe was very clearly written, and it was easy to navigate through the book. I would recommend this book if you wanted to make your own natural products and as an added bonus make your own cosmetics too, something I wouldn’t have ever considered.

Thank you NetGalley for my complimentary copy in return for my honest review.

***Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for an advance copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. Expected release date March 17, 2020.***

2.5 - 3 stars

I REALLY wanted to enjoy this book more because I was interested in trying out some of the recipes for DIY makeup and skincare instead of depending on products that are loaded with chemicals and goodness knows what else that I can’t pronounce. Unfortunately, there wasn’t anything included that piqued my interest enough to try, despite the beautiful pictures throughout the book.

There was nothing wrong with the book that I could find, I’m just apparently the demographic that this book seems more geared to.

I love to buy clean, natural beauty products, that are free from nasty chemicals. I had thought about making my own and when the chance of reviewing, Good Clean Beauty came, i jumped at the chance.
The book is divided up into sections, beginning with Ingredients + Benefits and Supplies + Equipment. The next sections cover, hair, body, make-up, eye shadows, and skin care. You will be shown how to make everything from deodorant, night cream, lip balms and body scrubs...in fact everything you could wish for in beauty products.
The ingredients are easy to source such as shea and coconut butter and essential oils, as well as staples such as baking soda and lemon juice, oats, etc.
This is a really good reference book and the authors have packed lots of 'recipes' into it. I made their 'So Zen Skin Toner' and was so pleased with how effective and cheap it is to make. Next i would love to make the 'Rare Earth Fragrance'.
However they do need to give some idea of use by dates, as homemade products have a short shelf life.
All in all a wonderful book with great ideas to make at home.

"Good Clean Beauty" is a great book if you are interested in DIY beauty and skin care. This book describes in detail the natural materials used and what they are best suited for. Then recipes follow for serums, moisturizers, face masks, and makeup. There are so many great and seemingly simple recipes to try. I run maker programs at my library and I will definitely try these out in a program in the future. This would be a great addition to an adult or teen collection. Very fun with beautiful photos!

Thank you Net Galley for the opportunity to review this book for my honest opinion. This is a good resource for anyone who is concerned about all the unsafe chemicals in their beauty products and wants to make their own. The recipes are easy to follow but some of the ingredients could be difficult to find. There is a good variety of recipes for hair, body and face.
