Pese a la gran difusión alcanzada recientemente por el estructuralismo, no siempre se comprende su verdadero significado.Esta obra de Edmund Leach está pensada para el uso de estudiantes de antropología, lingüística, literatura, filosofía y disciplinas afines que se enfrentan por vez primera con el método estructuralista. El objetivo es completo, pero la forma es simple; para la comprensión de esta obra pueden ser útiles algunos conocimientos anteriores de antropología, pero no resultan imprescindibles: la principal fuente etnográfica utilizada es el libro del Levítico.Esta guía será de utilidad para todos los que intenten captar los aspectos esenciales de la semiología, la teoría general de los signos y símbolos en cuanto vehículos de significado. Aunque éste es fundamentalmente un libro de texto, parte de su contenido es radicalmente nuevo; así, el capítulo 16 contiene una innovadora contribución a la teoría general del incesto, y el análisis de la lógica de los sacrificios de animales en el capítulo 18 supone un avance respecto a todo lo publicado anteriormente sobre el tema.La tesis principal del autor es que “los indicadores en los sistemas de comunicación no verbales, al igual que los elementos sonoros en la lengua hablada, no tienen significación aislados, sino sólo como miembros de conjuntos”; uno de los méritos del libro es traducir esta jerga en términos de nuestra experiencia cotidiana.

Finding it difficult to read and to follow through understanding some passages and ideas. Liked some parts of it. Did not like too much technical jargon and mathematics. What's the point? Also, not everyone reading the book had read the bible. The sacrifice chapters especially in reference to the bible stories were a torture to read. Sorry no!

As Leach says, this is a book suitable for undergraduate reading, so basically it is a fun, witty, and useful exercise book for whoever wants to practice anthropological thinking. Pretty much like a short version of Czerny's exercises for piano learners!
