Suitable for a Middle Grade-Young Adult audience.

In a medieval fantasy world, a young girl named Eist yearns to be a dragon rider like her deceased parents who died in a battle to defeat an all-powerful evil force known as The Blight. So, as soon as she is able to, she goes to the dragon rider school in her city and competes the entrance trials. While competing, she comes across a bully named Ain, who is determined to get her thrown out of the trials, and when she passes the trials, he works on getting her thrown out of the school. She also befriends Dille, a mysterious orphan who excels in everything, and Yachrist, the son of the elected ruler of her country. While at the school, she is partnered with a dragon as it hatches and helps and trains it as it grows, though her dragon is an odd species that barely grows. But before they complete their time at the school the Blight returns, determined to take over and rid their world of the three ruling gods, and bring Eist onto his side.

Overall, this is a fun adventure series for a young audience. It is very much akin to the Harry Potter books and to How to Train Your Dragon. Like Harry, both of Eist’s parents were killed by an evil all-powerful force, which she later goes on to face herself in an epic battle. And like Harry, she was marked by the evil force as a young child, linking them. Like the Harry Potter books, I loved the early books in this series, where Eist has lots of wide-eyed moments learning about dragons, and having fun training physically in endurance and weapons. I especially loved book 2 as the dragons grow like little children, with scenes like Eist having to feed her dragon, and the habits it picked up along the way like hoarding stuff that he’d stolen within the school dorms and she’d eventually have to return all the pilfered items. Her dragon is such an adorable character, and such a mystery that she feels so akin to with her hearing impairment and odd colored eye when everyone keeps telling her that his growth is stunted. And I loved her friends, Dille and Yachrist, which did feel like the threesome in Harry Potter in Harry, Ron, and Hermione. And Ain, was of course, in the place of Draco Malfoy and totally bullies Eist both vocally, taunting her, and physically, though he does grow up and change. Eist is rather generic main hero and even gets considered the cliched chosen one, like Harry Potter. In the first book she has this attitude issue where she sees herself as being better than everyone around her. So, she tends to focus on what she wants, without any real regard for anyone around her. It made her rather unlikeable in the first book, but she did tone down the superior attitude as she series went on, though she did keep the stubborn focus without any regard for others throughout, to the point of she’d throw herself into danger to rescue people or get things done without taking into consideration the friends she had around her and trying a team effort instead. The Blight was very akin to Voldemort and the later half of the books, like the Harry Potter books, all center on facing and defeating the Blight. I wasn’t much of a fan of the later books since magic returns to her world, magic ends up getting used as a crutch and the battles all devolve into randomly throwing around generic power blasts. And the end felt like it got solved too easily. There is a mild moment or two of romance in this, but it gets eclipsed quickly by the Blight’s obsession with Eist, all of which stay at a PG rating, though it doesn’t hold back on the violence. I didn’t much care for the ending, though it did feel like it came full circle and meticulously tried to tie up each and every thread. (I’ve heard the characters make a return appearance in the Rise of the Black Dragon series).

Brindle Dragon Boxed Set

This is the second Fisher series that I have read. While I mostly enjoyed the stories there are times when similarities to the other series would rear their heads. I found this to be very unfortunate. The books sometimes became so dragged out that I found myself wanting to just skip ahead. I think she has great ideas but needs to work on new ideas for her main characters. There are times that events are simply dragged out to make a cliffhanger in order to make another book to sell. I doubt that I’ll be reading anymore by this writer unless I really surprise myself.

Great series!
I hate having just 100 pages per book, but besides that, its great

We have here a really great story where we can follow that girl through some rocky times with the basic academy stuff when you are an outsider and stay an outsider throughout the story. and then comes the dragon and friends and all is good, wouldnt there be the oh so great eveil threatening to come back, and then we also have some time hopping and some magic here and there and oof alot is going on throughout this series.
I can jsut say that the details are just right, the world building could be a bit better but thats acceptable, and you just learn to love the characters, and not just "the mountain of meat" xD

Imaginative

The story is creative, but I felt disassociated with the character (s). In other works, the reader grows with the characters. Shares in their training experiences, and sees what challenges they need to overcome & how they work to overcome them. These books don't show that. That doesn't mean it's a bad thing. It's just the reason I can't relate.

The story is pretty fast paced, easy to read & get caught up in the story. I think I've read the 1st 3 books & part of the 4th, before I put them down so I could sleep.

Loved it! An epic tale about a girl determined to become a dragon rider who eventually ends up battling evil to save her world. Wonderful characters, lots of action, and an unbelievable number of amazing twists. A truly entertaining read!

Chosen - Very Enjoyable! This is a cute & entertaining story about setting a goal and putting in the work to make it happen. It has interesting characters, humor, and DRAGONS! I am greatly looking forward to the next one!

Awakened - Awesome! Eist finally gets to meet her dragon. And he is perfectly imperfect, just like her. Raising a dragon isn’t easy, but it is never boring! And don’t forget about school work, bullies, her grandfather, and inadvertently uncovering evil. No wonder she’s always tired. Bring on book 3!

Taken - Interesting! The start of her second year is challenging for many reasons...and them things go really wrong! This is a great story with characters you really care about that is building itself up to something even bigger. Can’t wait to continue the story!

Ambushed - Third Year. Healing and catching up on studies & training are on the agenda for Eist. As well as many discoveries about herself, her friends, and her world. The end of year Expedition goes spectacularly array.

Magic - Action Packed! Her fourth year starts out with Eist finally receiving her halberd and proceeds on with trainings & preparations for battle. Visions lead to danger, discoveries, unimaginable loss, recovery, destruction, and finally disaster. Impossible to put down!

Unleashed - Wow! Dill’s story & new skills are remarkable. Eist and her friends provide critical help in the fight against evil. There is hope, an unwelcome reunion, betrayal, tragic loss, and finally, a new hope.

Time Warp - Warped! A wonderfully convoluted story as Eist and her friend make some surprising discoveries that lead to a time traveling plan to save Brindle dragons from extinction. New allies are enlisted and skills learned.

Captured - Escape! Eist has been captured by the Blight. She does what she must to survive while making every effort to escape. A lot is learned and questions raised. The capture of her friends brings a change of circumstances.

The Power of Three - Epic Conclusion! The Blight is still set on having Eist and brings his fight to the academy. The ensuing battle brings his biggest victory yet and some unexpected consequences. When the next ‘final battle’ is absolutely amazing. A beautifully written conclusion to an excellent series with all the loose ends are tied up nicely.

This set of 9 "books" is really one dragon academy type story in 9 episodes (each takes under an hour to read), each of which ends soon after a significant climax, often at the end of a term.

The main (student) characters get good development, their dragons and their teachers/leaders less so.

Eist has problems with her eyes and ears since her illness at the time of her parents' deaths, but maintains the aspiration, nay vision, of being a dragon rider. And somehow the strange damaged runt of a dragon she bonds with seems to be just perfect for her - even though it looks like he'll never get big enough to actually fulfil her dream of being a dragonrider.

So a good story, suitable for young adult readers (has some adult themese), but more like an extended novel or a box set of novelletes, as it becomes less and less a school for dragons saga, and more a battle for the world.

Love like my brindled hound dog

I remember how Jackie my brindled hound dog used to look at me with her beautiful puppy dog eyes when she wanted something, impossible to tell her no. The brindle dragon in this well written box set of novels is just as cute and adoring as puppy dog. One can't help but fall in love with him. The main character is xo lucky to have found the only survivor of the clutch of dragon eggs. They both grow and encounter life together in a very exciting fantasy world filled with wonderful and dreadfully dangerous adventures. Riding on the back of a dragon with the wind blowing through your hair, exhilarating and frightening all at once. Fun story to read.

One of the best series I've ever read.

I luved this series. It had everything you want in a series. Long enough ( 9 books) that it could really go deep into the characters and make you feel you knew them and I really fell in luv with them all. It starts with a young girl determined to be a Dragon Rider like her heroic partners, who died to soon. She has to try harder than anyone else. She has never let herself have friends; convincing herself that she didn't need them. The next 4 years will change her life forever. If you luv fantasy with dragons, romance, coming of age and tons of action, then you will luv the Brindle Dragon series. Highly, highly recommended for all.

Loved the complete series bookp 1-9. Couldn't put the series down. Characters evolve as the series continues. A lot of action. I definitely would recommend this book

Loved the Brindle complete series books 1-9. Couldn't put the the books down. Characters evolve as the series continues. If you like action, friendship, and adventure. This is a book you wil! Enjoy! It has "why does this always happen to me". Friendship that last no matter what problems occur. Takes place over several years. Good story for tweens to adult. This book is definitely a keeper. I bought the series, and know it's a series I will read again.

I love reading about a strong female main character and one that doesn't instantly fall into the pit of once she's started on her life dream all of a sudden can't think about anything but boys. Eist is strong, works hard for her goal of becoming a dragon rider, she isn't instantly good at everything she starts. There are times that information falls into her and her friends laps, but they still need to work on trying to find the majority of what they need. Eist can be thick when it comes to certain romantic interests. Towards the later books, there is a great contrast between how to show romantic interest in a healthy and not healthy manner and having Eaist see that and trust her gut.

Second time through a couple years later.
The higher rating is for world building, character interaction and general dialogue.
It could definitely use some refining (including a thesaurus) but it kept me involved the whole way through and was perfect to listen to throughout the stressful drywall/taping task I had going on.
Also: DRAGONS!
Coming of age
Not focused on romance - it’s a thing in the books. Adorable crushes that teens get on one another and have to figure out how the hell to manage.
Supportive friends and mentors
Strong female leads
DRAGONS!
Solid complicated villain.
Not sure how I feel about the wrap up.

Exciting read

This series really shouldn't work, but it does.
It does things it's that it shouldn't or don't really work - it is far too familiar to Pern, the stories are the wrong length, too long to be short stores and too short to be novels so characters don't get enough time to properly develop and the world feels like it only has a dozen people. Even Dille's second dragon never gets a name.
But in spite of, or maybe because of, these issues, it has life and the style of writing and the story and characters are so well done that it makes for a great read.

This series would have been much better if combined together as a single book, at most two, and not broken up into 9 100 page books. Each of the books ended at strange times where it felt like the author decided to just stop writing and start a new book at the next sentence they would have written.

I enjoy the story and found it entertaining and fairly well written which is the only reason it received as high of a review as it did. Some proof reading is needed for the mistakes I saw but overall it was good.

Rating would have been higher, but once again, an author has no concept of the correct usage of prepositional objects. Obviously, "she" is not part of Jada Fisher's vocabulary. Examples: "...and her had..."; "...her and Yacrist had been separated...";...many times he, Dillie and her had spent..." and on, and on, and on. I am currently reading an excellent book with NO such grating errors popping up. Someone suggested the author was rushed, but being rushed is no excuse for such blatant and consistent misusage.

I did it backwards

I read the Black Dragon series first, and then picked up the story of Eist. In some other comments, folks seemed to think the Brindle series was better, and in general, I believe that is true. The highest praise I think a book can have is engaging. And this series was difficult for me to put down. I caught myself reading several hours past my "bed time" and only when I was completely exhausted and ready to pass out would I put it down.

I am going to try to get my daughter to read it, because a strong female lead that never gives up is a great character.

Read this

Wow I just binge read the whole series, what a rollercoaster ride it seemed I read whole chapters without breathing. I haven’t felt like this since reading lord of the rings back-in the 70s. Jada is a fantastic writer that you can trust to take you right out there and bring you safely back again.do yourself a favour and read this series. Me I’m just going to catch my breath and then start the black dragon. Jada thank you.

Hmmm....

This felt kind if disjointed. Red dragon is killed and no explanation as to how. The academy doesn't share news of blight in beginning yet left those who knew in the ranks without explicit orders not to talk about it. I know it's from a youth perspective but there's a feeling I get of no real instruction at times from the adults. I may attempt the next series but not sure.

Best read all at once

These are essentially short stories. The timeline is hard to follow, because it seems like a year goes by in a week. The build-up takes several books, instead of having rises and falls in each book. And when I say short ... I mean it. Average book length is 230 pages. If there weren't 9 books it'd be a waste of effort. That all being said, it IS a good story, with some really good twists and hard lessons.

Disappointing

The author’s poor command of English ruins this series. Time after time sentences appear with no sense to them. I had to stop and reread them several times before concluding that there was no way to make them into anything sensible. Of course, at this point I had completely lost track of the narrative and had to backtrack a few paragraphs . I won’t be reading anything else by this author.

OMG what a ride

I started with the prequel, I highly recommend this. Then the boxed set of Brindle Dragon. It was a wild ride from beginning to end of course it takes your emotions right along with it. Ms. Jada Fisher hits another winner. So far all the books I have read by her have been awesome.
Would recommend to anyone of any age. If you like dragons and magic, and a box of tissues, by all means pick Brendel Dragon series. And by the way, that's my cats name Brendel. : )

each book got better than the last

Excellent series. I’m a retired English Teacher who had to read young adult books so I could recommend them to my students. I found out over the years that I really like reading them. The Books are easy to read and you don’t have to be a young adult to enjoy them. I just downloaded the Black Dragon Series which is a continuation of the Brindle Dragon Series.

4.5!!!

Wow! Absolutely amazing!! I could not put this boxed set down and blew off sleep to finish it! What an interesting take on this genre, with an exciting heroin and her band of misfits! What a truly rollercoaster of a story that spun, twisted, shook and turned until you couldn't stand it anymore and then, just one more for good measure! Truly a masterful and remarkable series!

Incredibly fun read

If you enjoy a great fantasy then you need to read the Brindle Dragon Boxed Set. Nine couldn't put down books that grabbed my attention from page one. This series really has it all, kids coming into their own, friendships on the scale of LOTR, epic wars and love. A truly great read.

A pretty good series

As with all magical series heroes and heroines are impervious to pain and death. Whether they are healed by time , magic and or the "gods". It gets a bit wearing. Other than that this was a fun read and well worth the time. Love the dragons. Would have liked more dragons less magic but that's just personal preference.

Really good series

Really good read, could hardly book my kindle down for 2 days! There were bits of the book that got slightly convoluted, and the love triangle was a little irritating in parts (felt like too much of a cliche), but overall great books, great world building, great characters and of course great dragons!

Dragons Rock

I gave this series a five star rating because I feel it deserves it for keeping inside it's world from start to finish. I just didn't want to leave.
I would recommend it to anyone who loves to be transported on the back of a Dragon into a world of magic and adventures where you can laugh and cry and occupy that world with the wonderful characters.

I enjoyed this series. The heroine is not a raving beauty which I liked. Her group of friends each had their own well-defined personalities and the surrounding characters were well-rounded. Each story has multiple adventures which I think keeps the reader hooked.
The reason this series was given 4 starsinstead of 5 is because the heroine is saved miraculously each time she is in dire trouble.

The best dragon series I've read

I love fantasy books and all things dragon. This series pulled me in right from the beginning, no waiting for it to become interesting. I loved the characters right away, getting to watch them grow, seeing the strengths and weaknesses. I was so glad their stories continue, I didn't want it all to end.

Recommended for my grandchildren

Only gave a four stars as the last in series had to much padding as it could have ended in book eight if written differently. Recommended for my grandchildren as all the adult bits written sensibly with enough to make them ask questions with their parents
