About the author

Julie Danho’s first full-length collection, Those Who Keep Arriving, won the 2018 Gerald Cable Book Award from Silverfish Review Press. Her chapbook, Six Portraits, received the 2013 Slapering Hol Press Chapbook Award, and her poems have appeared in journals such as Pleiades, Alaska Quarterly Review, and New Ohio Review as well as featured on The Writer's Almanac, Poetry Daily, and Verse Daily. She has been awarded fellowships from the Rhode Island State Council on the Arts and the MacColl Johnson Fund.

Julie works as an editor in Rhode Island. She loves art history, serial commas, and taking more books out of the library than she can read. She is married to the poet David O'Connell.​

If you like ekphrastic poetry, you will love this book - some of the strongest pieces are responses to works of art, from sculpture to painting. There's a lot of emphasis here on families, both families of origin as well as chosen families, and how we love, lose, honor, and remember those families, as well as protect them. What I liked best were the elements of surprise, curiosity, and wonder, as well as (and this is a rare feat) knowing how to *end* a poem. I find that much contemporary poetry leaves me nonplussed, going "did I understand that? what just happened there? is that it?", and these poems definitely didn't make me feel that way. Instead, reading this was like listening to a deft storyteller who knows which details to accent, how to seduce you into listening, and how to leave enough space for you to reflect on what that story might say about you, the listener. How can you not want to read a book with titles like "Erased de Kooning", "When the First Father Dies", "Ode to My Pink Bathroom", "Jenny Perowski is Ahead Of Me in the Grocery Store Line", and "I Want to Eat Bugs With You Underground"? A strong start, and a strong finish, this book is a keeper.

I greatly enjoyed following these poems, ranging from storytelling to ekphrastic, into the spaces they opened, invariably leaving me somewhere else. The same could be said of the collection as a whole. It felt like being taken on a beautiful walk with a lot to see. Here is a voice I hope to hear a lot more of.
