Obsidian Cove Prep was supposed to be Lennox Malia’s chance at freedom. Instead, it ended up as her own personal hell on Earth. Daily bullying and a severe lack of friends left her feeling hopeless and desperate for graduation.
That all changed one day when five guys showed up, very obviously interested in her. It all seemed too good to be true, and to say she was suspicious is an understatement. When secrets are revealed, and she discovers who she truly is, her new friends are there to help and guide her.
Navigating her last weeks of human high school would have been hard enough, but now she has to come to terms with her new powers and a new world, once again the outsider. Although, being the outsider may not be as bad as she thinks...if she gets to be with Calev, Tristan, Aeson, Evander, and Lachlan.
As her training begins, Lennox finally starts to find her inner strength. Unfortunately, her inner strength may not be enough to withstand the stalkers and attempted kidnappings that have come into her life along with her new powers. The danger worsens every day, leaving her with more questions than answers. With her powers still in chaos, they need to get to their new school, now more than ever.
Will starting at Obsidian Cove Supernatural Academy be the fresh beginning she’s been hoping for, or will it be too much of a change for Lennox and her new boyfriends to handle?
Call of the siren is intended for readers 18+ it is a reverse harem, paranormal, new adult novel. It contains some content that may be triggering for some
Jarica is an American author. She prefers writing paranormal and fantasy books. When she isn't writing she is playing her xbox with her husband and fellow nerd. She has two crazy boys who make writing a challenge, but one she gladly accepts.
Sloppy plotting overall that was just poorly thought out. First, her bullying. She's supposedly threatening the status of the alpha female at the school, because she is so pretty and everyone likes her. How was it so easy to turn literally everyone - including supposedly the teachers - against her? I know there's a strong anti-human theme at the start of this book, but seriously - not one friend went to her when the rumors started and asked what the hell was going on? I don't buy it. Second, the comeuppance for her bullies.
Then there is the utter inconsistency that is Lennox's personality. She says she is holding herself back from trusting the guys, because she's waiting for the other shoe to drop. She mentions that other people have tried to get close to her to use her and hurt her before. And yet we see her immediately accept every new person she meets. Citrine member there originally to take you to a different faction? Clearly a future bff. Future brother- and sister-in-law? Trusted right away enough to share the deep dark secret. Moreover, she says she is holding herself back from the guys, but she doesn't do that at all. She's immediately attracted to them, but it's okay, they have a bond.
There are other lazy plot points too that seem like it was just to move the story along and make it easier. For example, we've been told nothing of Lennox learning magic spells, unless I missed it, but she is able to casually use a fire spell to melt zip ties. How? Also, this idea of her magic being instinctive and not needing training is just too easy and a cop out - as is her explanation that she can't do things because she's a reactive person. Then learn how to be proactive.
Add to that shallow fleshing out of the characters - I don't feel like I really know the men much at all, uninspired plot choices, and annoying word choices (the author used the word husked as a verb for speaking three times in a single chapter), and I really did not like this book. I'm passing on the rest of this series. I'm getting worried too - this is two flops in a row for me from this author.
Cons: - Almost no world building - No real relationship building - No character development - Unoriginal plot - Insta love - Personalities just changed without explanation - No real storytelling - No reason to emotionally invest in the characters
Conclusion: I'm mad that I wasted time reading this. I won't read anything else by this author.
I am honestly slightly surprised on two fronts. Surprised at how lacking this book was considering who wrote it and surprised by how many positive reviews it has received. The concept was nice and one that isn't overplayed (well apart from the whole academy thing) but the concept of the child bred and raised in captivity and forgets somehow to found out later after the bad guys get back involved, it's been done but not exactly like this so it's ok. Plus it's damn near impossible to write a book these days that hasn't already been written similar already. It was also edited nicely, which is a big thing for me. So I've rated a 3, hold off on the "I'm a fan how dare you insult this author" comments. These reviews are our opinions, not fact. Me saying that certain parts just didn't add up is not me attacking you or the author.
That being said... I really feel that James didn't do a lot of psychological research prior to writing this. A teen girl who said she doesn't actually know how to give hugs, most forms of touch since childhood have more than likely been associated with negative feelings, received almost no affection or love from "parents", severely bullied apart from it being physical, shunned completely and ignored or treated horribly by literally everyone in her life except for the cook she mentioned when going home for holidays. Now what part of any of that screams functional with just a bit of shyness that almost instantly gets turned around into a "burning fire" and standing up for herself? Or someone so lacking in love and affection apart from the negative almost eagerly accepting it after a small stint of avoidance simply because she thought they were leaving...with no aversions. Or an obvious virgin stopping her guy from pleasuring her to tell him she's on the pill and clean instead of that she's a virgin until after he put it in. She knew enough to know to be on birth control so she knew enough that there would be a bit of pain the first time. Ooooor how she just bounced right back with no problems at all apart from a slight break down in the shower after being kidnapped, stripped, tortured repeatedly, poisoned, had to deal with her torture so her mates didn't get tortured as well while being away from her other mates, had to abandon her two mates that are with her and the supposed little girl she thinks is there in hopes of finding help only to be "devastated" that they were on an island and she didn't know what to do so she hides and sleeps in a tree all night while being hunted and taunted then runs back to the building thinking the bad guys are killing any other patients only to realize no one was alive/there and all she did was get a little sad and move right on past that. I get that there are strong people in the world, I know that everyone handles everything differently and such but from a psychological point of view none of it adds up. Yeah sure the desperation for love after being starved of it makes complete sense, but most of the other stuff didn't. It also felt slightly rushed. Apart from that it was rather interesting, especially the mimicry and I wouldn't mind reading the next book if she doesn't go through as much trauma and cries for a moment but then is fine for the entirety of the book.

High school has been hell for Lennox. Those she thought were friends turned on her and made her both the outcast of the school and the number one target. For years boarding school has been all she knows. Of course once a group of guys show up not only does her life get turned upside down, she learns she’s not just some boring human. Once the guys (5) show up everything moves quickly from Lennox gaining powers to the threats against her life. Wish she’d taken things a little slower with them all considering her past but they’re all pretty obsessed with her so it’s really a win win for her. So far a good start to the series, we’ll see how things progress!
This is seriously one of my favorite books written by Jarica James. She opened up this awesome supernatural world that appears to only be amping up. I love Lennox and each of her guys as their individuality really starts to shine through. The steam level was perfect. The story is fast paced with so much going on that I'm anxious for more!
Interesting start to the series. I like the build up of the harem and how the heroine finds her voice slowly but surely with the support of her men. The guys are fun and supportive which I appreciate as I’m a bit over the bully thing.
I also enjoyed the mystery surrounding her powers as they’re not usual. All in all an interesting twist to a well known trope. I’ll be continuing that series.
The female mc was so unbearable I am not even finishing the series. I can not stand the “I’m an outcast but it’s fine, everybody hates me but I’m better than them” mentality. It’s very woe is me but also pick me.
Overall I enjoyed this book. I liked Lennox as our main character for the most part, but her ostracism felt forced and under-explained. The guys were great, they all had their own personalities but the time that Lennox spent with each of them felt unbalanced.
It also felt incredibly rushed. It’s not even the instalove thing, but more an issue with pacing. I felt like I had whiplash at points, especially at the beginning. The decisions the characters made sometimes didn’t make any logical sense and felt like they were solely to create the plot.
The plot and world building is nothing special, it’s been done time and time again. A secret community of supernaturals, magical racism and blood purity being the main source of conflict. It does seems weird to me to have the whole ‘magical racism’ storyline but then have the main characters also bigoted? They’re as prejudiced against humans and the other factions as the supposed bad guys
But yeah, I like the characters enough to continue the series for now
DNF (did not finish). What made the book unfinishable in your opinion? This was not a good book. If there is one theme that I don't appreciate its romanticizing of suicide. This story was full of cliches without any original twist from the author. The bullying was over the top and nonsensical, the story line was choppy, and the main character was not consistent. One moment the female main character wants to be left alone, be invisible, and is a pacifist. Then all of a sudden these guys show up, she becomes confrontational, and violent. At the 16% point where the female main character tries to commit suicide but gets her special powers revealed, made me drop the book. I really don't appreciate the author making light of a serious topic like suicide. The drama was over the top and cringe worthy. Overall, I just can't recommend this book to anyone. Which is too bad because it had potential.
I had to DNF this one, unfortunately. It was just too high school for me. Yes, I know that it takes place at a high school, which I normally don't care for, but the writing is too high school-ish for me. There is so little depth here with the characters and their emotions that I can't feel anything for them.
I started getting bored with it early on, but decided to keep going to see if maybe the story would help keep things going. Even when there is action in the story, I'm bored. Her getting kidnapped, tied up, and assaulted was just... boring.
Plus, I'm not a huge fan of insta-love. I love it when characters build their relationship and grow their feelings, not all of a sudden I want you and have claimed you, like this one. There is nothing to tell us how they are feeling, even with the multiple POV. I just couldn't get into anything. Rather than keep going with a boring read, I had to just toss into the DNF pile. I was disappointed, too, because the premise had promise.
I really liked this one. It is the «lonely girl suddenly has a bunch of guys showing her attention»-thing going, but its much better than it sounds.
She has been bullied at school and is just trying to get through the last few months before she graduates and can star college. The boys are sent out to find the supernatural causing magic spikes in the human world, and quickly falls for her and their protective natures having the work cut out for them since it’s not just her bullies at school that is after her.
Started off well then started to fall apart about a quarter of the way in seemed kind of rushed or maybe uninspired for the middle of the book and then rallied slightly towards the end. I think it needs a good editor or maybe co author willing to make suggestions on help with character development and story progression. Not the worst book I ever read but needs a bit of work.
Once again Jarica James has written an amazing book which left me wanting more. The storyline and characters were equally amazing. I loved Lennox she showed real emotions in the book but as she got stronger showed people not to mess with her and those she loves. I highly recommend this book and can’t wait for book 2.
The ending felt quite rushed, but overall it was a good book. A nice harem of mixed supernatural species. Good steamy scenes and I like that, while the FMC was a virgin, it wasnt made into a big deal. It was a simple statement and then it was done. I'm intrigued about the larger plot of experimentation. Looking forward to reading book 2.
For the first book in a series, this was a pretty intense one. It was fast-paced and action packed. Together with the introduction of the characters and the world building, I barely realized how much time had passed while reading. I need more!!
I dont feel as though the male characters are well developed yet but this is the 1st book so hopefully it'll happen as the series goes on. I do feel like it could've been longer, it felt almost like the 1st half of a book to me.
This is an intense story of survival. I felt so much for the heroine. I was hoping those guys would help her. This story has a good flow so I am totally happy with the story so far.
Interesting storyline. Mystery, some steam and supernatural hotties. Will be interesting to see who and what she is and why so many people are looking For her.
I'm debating whether or not to even continue this story. I know that it's several books long. So much happened in this book that I really don't see how the series is going to progress. We have school bullies ✔ We have hot guys show up ✔ We have instant "she's mine" ✔ We have instant "they're mine" from MFC ✔ We have villains appear ✔ We have attempted kidnappings ✔ We have actual kidnapping ✔
What we don't get is any real character building. We don't get any real relationship building. The relationship building is eliminated with the ultimate "mate" trope. Our FMC didn't even know she was a supernatural being, but she accepted everything so easily. She had allowed herself to be bullied to the point of attempted suicide. She has no self confidence. She has no skills. She's had no interpersonal relationships with anyone. When the guys show up, miraculously, she finds a way to stand up for herself. But only briefly. Her whole personality is like reading about someone who is bipolar. One minute she acts tough. The next minute she's whining and crying. It was super annoying. As soon as I thought she was going to start being strong, she'd let me down and turn into a whining baby again. The guys become her "strength" while she whimpers. Another thing that bothered me were these weird "jumps" in things that happened. For example, they go to the zoo. When they're leaving, she drops something on the ground. The guys are a couple steps ahead of her. Someone grabs her and takes off with her. I'm sitting there like, WHAT? What just happened? She saves herself and the guys are all like, "sorry we weren't there." But as a reader I was thinking, "How the hell was someone able to get her, at the precise moment she dropped something, when she had several men right in front of her? How did that kidnapper manage to get her far enough away that she ends up having to save herself?" It was just a really weird, almost quirky, jump in time. There were several things like that making you go back to read again and see if you missed something. Overall, I would say my biggest problem with this book is that the timing is all off. Things are happening so fast that you would think the author is trying to finish the series in a couple of books instead of what? 5? 6 books in the series? What's the rush? It's the first book. You need to spend time on developing the characters. What is the setting for the world the characters are in? This book doesn't really let you grasp anything in any kind of depth. By the end of book one, I don't even really know what the plot is. If the plot is about what she is and who wants her, then we already have all that information. Why do we need so many more books in the series. It could all end in the next book! Actually, it could have all ended in this book! I'm going to give the series one more book to see if it gets better. If it doesn't get better then that will be it for me. Sorry if I rambled in this review. There was just so much, that I couldn't think what was most important to review.
"Call of the Siren" is the first book in the finished "Obsidian Cove Supernatural Academy" series, with Lennox living among humans, not aware of the powers within herself. At the start of this book, it's clear Lennox has been starved from love and affection, and she has no idea what to do with the sudden attention she gets from five new students.
I always enjoy series revolving around an fmc who has been unaware of the supernatural world, and watching her slowly learn about her powers and grow into them. Her five new (boy)friends jump in from the start to help her with the transition, and support her through it all. It was very nice to see Lennox get the love and attention she deserves. Lennox is stil quite young in this first book (18), and with the sheltered life she led, I feel like she has some growing up to do throughout this series. I'm looking forward to see how that will happen, and what she and her men will experience along the way.
Even though the relationships between Lennox and her men are light and lovely, the context around them has a bit more darkness in it. It creates an interesting and fast paced storyline, with a lot happening in this first book. The reason I went with a four star rating, is because I felt like a little too much was happening at times, where some points could use a bit more context or "body". Also; the relationship building seems a little too rushed for me. With this book being medium burn, I believe a slow burn might have fit the storyline (and the characters) better. But that probably makes this the perfect series for readers who prefer a fast paced storyline, with plenty of steam!
SYNOPSIS (of 5 Books Series): This series is set in the modern world where the supernaturals try to live separate to the humans. The FC (Lennox) does not know she is a supernatural but finds out when the MCs (Bear, Psychic, Mage, Vampire & Gargoyle) are sent to find her because she is an undocumented shifter. The story arcs over the FC finding out who and what she is and where she came from, her relationship with each MC and trying to evade and bring down the people who are stealing people and experimenting on making powerful hybrid shifters. There is a HEA
This is an enjoyable enough series and decently written and edited with a few typing and spelling issues but not enough to really impact the reader. The world, relationship and character building is good and gives depth to the story and the individual characters. There’s a decent enough amount of action to keep the books moving and the sex scenes are not over the top or too plentiful but are relatively hot 🌶️🌶️. There’s MM action as well as FM action. The MCs themselves are pretty vanilla in their behaviour and interactions. None of them came across as particularly strong, possessive or alpha.
This story is not remotely original with the FC not knowing she is a supernatural, experiments being done on supernaturals and a corrupt governing body. If you can accept that it is an OK read with some action and HEA. It is also another one of those books where the villains are depicted as evil and do terrible things but the “Good Guys” refuse to kill or really punish them because that would be wrong 🙄
One of my biggest issues with stories like this is where the author makes the FC really powerful and yet they always get their asses kicked by the villains. This series is a classic for that and it is nonsensical and frustrating. Despite the fact that the FC has been training and can use multiple powers she is always taken down by lesser supernaturals and doesn’t seem able or willing to fight back. There are also several situations where the villains could be killed or taken down but aren’t which just seems a ridiculous plot method to keep the story dragging out. Much of the story doesn’t really make sense either with the villain seeming to evolve and there are gaps left in the story - such as what happened to the various regional councils after they were investigated? Were the academies improved and the corruption stamped out? Why did the FC not really acknowledge her Siren side?
In conclusion I found this readable but not a keeper or a series that really grabbed my attention. I skimmed quite a bit as the books progressed.
Only time will tell if I am able to binge read the remaining 5 books before I lose interest.

"It's dark. She hates this place, and she's lonely. But she also gets angry and protective when they tease her around us, like she's trying to protect us. She also finds us annoying when we interrupt her, but she likes having us around," he explained, his face scrunching up as he sorted through what he’d picked up over the past few days. "Women are confusing," he concluded with a shake of his head.
How do people like this manage to find like-minded fuckers? Is there a villain's matchmaking site? 'Yes, I'm Brett, and I love long walks in the woods to torture young maidens. Murder count sixty, and I'm a Libra'.
I thought it was interesting, similar to many other series, about the pretty girl being bullied because the mean girl Barbie was worried she would take top spot as the popular girl. The men that joined the last few months of school were sent to retrieve a supernatural that slipped through the cracks. We learn quickly that it’s Lennox, the bullied girl in the school they joined. With them being super attractive they had women crawling over them while trying to befriend Lennox. She immediately thinks they will leave her high and dry and she tried her best to ignore them. It became impossible and after a horrific public display of bullying, she finds herself in the water, with scales and gills. From there, the guys convince her of the supernatural world, and they start to learn more about what she can do. At this point, they have found stalkers, tails, they dodge kidnappers but near the end the worst happens and her and two of the guys are taken. They fight like hell to get off the island and thankfully persistence pays off. Can’t wait to see what’s next for Lennox and her guys.
This book was full of action, and I couldn't put it down! I can't believe I had it for months before I started reading it!
Lennox is a freaking amazing strong FMC, she cares more about others than she does herself, especially once the five handsome young guys enroll in her school. I saw her get stronger and starting to stand up for herself even more once Lachlan, Aeson, Evander, Tristan and Calev surrounded her.
The guys are all sweet, all possessive. I love Tristan and Aeson's relationship (obsessed, even). Lachlan is my favorite with his bear! Calev revealed himself to be so adorable. And Evander's vampire being all possessive as well was everything! I really enjoyed reading their POVs.
I cannot wait to read the second book and how Lennox is going to fit in her new school and to discover more about her powers as well!
This book was pretty intense. Lennox had been through years of bullying when the guy came into her life. She was a strong character with a strong spirit and she keeps on going. Lennox doesn't ever really give up. She fights for her guys and herself. It was hard for her to trust them, but she eventually came through on that end. Watching her and the guys grow throughout the book was great. Lennox has great survival instincts at the end, she uses a survival technique that most wouldn't think to use when put in an impossible situation like she was. I very much enjoyed the world the author created for this story. I look forward to reading the next book.
I really wanted to like this book. The bones are so so good, but it just isn't well fleshed out. There are major plot points that are just breezed over, I don't want to give anything away, but major bombshells are dropped and then the FMC just goes meh and keeps going. The spicy scenes seem like they're thrown in and don't really add anything, I'd much rather read a slow burn or no burn action book rather than have arbitrary scenes that don’t fit. It’s well written but definitely not for me. There is just too much going on to fully develop characters or hold any feeling for them. I don’t have it in me to read 5 more of books but, I think it’s a good safe intro to RH book if you’re new to the genre and it’s super clever plot wise.
