Pretty good synopsis of the history of Christianity. I am a Southern Baptist and the part of John The Baptist being born with out original sin was news to me. I googled it and it said he was conceived the normal way, but when John leapt in Elizabeth womb that's when he became "with original sin". See if make me go further than the book to check on that. I
I love history which is why I have already read 30+ of these this year. I also love theology, and I check what is written against what I know to be true.
I agree that as a society of Christians some more glaringly than others have deviated so far from the teachings of Jesus and the Apostles I am not sure He would recognize some of what is being touted as Biblical

A very Good insight into Christianity. As far as my knowledge, series of books like History of cannites, history of Israel, history of Jews , history of Christianity would complete a quartet... I deeply thank captivating history for providing us such a crisp and interesting history.

A third of today's population is Christian. Christianity, which had started in the first century, took at least more than 1000 years to reach every place in the world. And all of this is because of its history. There were so many events that unfolded to make this happen. The great measures taken by his apostles, Constantine the Great, pilgrims, scholars, and even the common people helped in it.

"Do not be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Let the day's own trouble be sufficient for the day." - Jesus Christ

This book provides a brief history of Christianity and the Church. I truly learnt a lot from this book, but honestly, I think some things were not explained. How was Baptism performed? How did the Christians actually convert people? Who came up with the idea of the Pope and the Bishop? All these questions remain unexplained throughout the book.

Tip of the tip of the iceberg

Understand this was intended to be a general history of Christianity but I was disappointed there was virtually no mention of the church leaders that carried on after the apostles. The depth of material was what you might expect from a high school history class. It also seemed apparent the author doesn’t have a personal perspective of Christianity as a number of statements about Christianity were either misleading or wrong. I certainly wasn’t expecting a biased view because this was intended to be an historical perspective but if I want to learn about physics I’d read a book by a physicist. Still, it was worth the price I paid and as it may have been intended, I’m anxious to read more about the history of Christianity.

Christianity is examined from biblical times, the early years, medieval times, and through the Reformation, and Enlightenment. The amount of political power eventually led to corruption. The printing press helped change the world while universities became stronger. The author presents a narrative of geographical events.

"It could be said that there are as many interpretations of Jesus’ teachings as there are categories of Protestant churches." p.87

An enjoyable read for all!

A thoroughly good book that I will recommend to my A level Religious Studies students as it contains a good back ground knowledge into the history of Christianity as a whole. Though still a captivating read for historians in general. The book provides a lot of background material into the divisions within Christianity.

I picked up this book because I became interested in the Early Church, especially the Apostles after Christ's ascension. This book is a good summary of the history of Christianity. This is not a book to read if you want details. Picture it as an appetizer instead of a full meal.

A good general history. My criticism is for the audio book: the reader didn’t know how to pronounce a lot of the names which sometimes made it cringeworthy.

A good book for a beginner

A good introduction book of Christianity for an atheist. The earlier chapters could include more historical facts instead just quoted from the Bible.

Say and believe what you like re Christianity, but no one can deny the impact it has had upon influencing religious and even secular society to this day. The book lays out the beginnings of why a person named Jesus was so influential in antiquity and why his teachings are still adhered today by many and why some are skeptical.

Captivating history books I have found to be interesting and enjoyable and although they are not scholarly works, they do nevertheless present a pretty good overview of the subjects they address.

It’s a nice overview of the history of Christianity. The best part is the beginning of the book, contemporary history is desceibed very briefly and should be dealt with in another book. Good reading
