Dr. John J. Parrino is a Psychologist, writer, husband, father, walker, weightlifter, cook, and lover of all things Italian, especially his wife. He has been in the private practice of Clinical Psychology for over three decades. Dr. Parrino’s stress management products are sold internationally, and he is particularly proud of the perennial favorite, FROM PANIC TO POWER: The Positive Use of Stress. The book catapulted him into the “quasi-famous” stage of his life: A sterling review by The Wall Street Journal; and a two year stint as the Stress Doctor for the CBS affiliate in a major metropolitan area.

The stress management theme continued in JUNGLE OF LOVE, a parable featuring the marriage between two diverse animals, which symbolized the fight (tiger) and flight (giraffe) reflex common in destructive relationships.

Dr. Parrino turned a personal experience with renovation stress into an edgy, humorous advice book, NOW WE KNOW WHY IT’S CALLED A PUNCH LIST: How to
Cope When Your Beloved Home Is Invaded by a Gang of Tool-Wielding, Tattooed, Organized-Challenged Contractor and Subs. The book was selected as the Reviewer’s Choice by The Midwest Book Review. The second edition is due for publication in 2019.

The Psychologist also completed a post- doctoral training program in Psychopharmacology. Not bad for a guy who carried a solid D-plus average in high school, and whose dad affectionately called “babbeo”. That’s Italian for blockhead. He now insists that his father Pepe refer to him as Dr. John.

Anyone who has ever done any sort of home renovation knows the kind of taxing undertaking it can be. And they’re quite aware of the mundane saying that “The best-laid plans of mice and men often go awry.” This is although a meticulously created plan/checked has been formulated.

Despite homeowners wanting to have certain things accomplished in their home renovation, they’re faced with contractors who for want of a better word have their own agendas in getting additional unnecessary work to be included. These contractors in attempting to beguile homeowners use a flowery type of speech; for example, they might say “An exuberant abundance of gastronomic experts” instead of simply saying “Too many cooks.”

With a seemingly unending stream of upsets and changes to a homeowner’s original renovation plans, homeowners reach a point where they’re at their wit's end and slowly becoming stressed out over what should have been a simple undertaking.

Being a psychologist, the author, John J. Parrino, has taken the home renovation process and has mapped it unto what we as individuals go through in attempting to recreate ourselves into an improved individual. As individuals, we sometimes reach a breaking point where we might just want to punch someone for having put us through an upsetting experience. And if we apply this to getting each item on our home renovation checklist, we’re able to see why it has become a punch list instead.

For wanting to inform his readers of the psychoanalytical realities regarding home renovation in an amusing, entertaining manner this reviewer has given Mr. Parrino 5 STARS for his endeavor here.

I'm sorry to say I really just didn't get it. It was a very quick read, and maybe it was supposed to be comedic? I guess is mostly pokes fun at having to deal with contractors which can be entirely frustrating, but overall just not for me.

I received a copy of this book from a giveaway in exchange for an honest review.
