Magnus is a young mouse with a huge appetite. In desperation his mother feeds him some pills which turn out to be "porker" pills, used for fattening pigs. Magnus begins to grow and grow and grow, and soon he turns into a powermouse. These audio cassettes contain the complete and unabridged story.
Dick King-Smith was born and raised in Gloucestershire, England, surrounded by pet animals. After twenty years as a farmer, he turned to teaching and then to writing children's books.
Dick writes mostly about animals: farmyard fantasy, as he likes to call it, often about pigs, his special favorites. He enjoys writing for children, meeting the children who read his books, and knowing that they get enjoyment from what he does.
Among his well-loved books is Babe, The Gallant Pig, which was recently made into a major motion picture, and was nominated for an Academy Award.
Dick lived with his wife in a small 17th-century cottage, about three miles from the house where he was born.
This is the first book I have read by Dick King-Smith, I found it entertaining and a good read. It was recommended to me, from my children's writing course. Its a lovely story of animal and human interactions, and how a man like a rat catcher can be so loving towards something he usually exterminates. I loved the end when Magnus defended his mother, from the rolling pin. They all lived happily ever after.
Reminiscent of Erwin Moser's books, the main characters are eloquent farm animals. My seven year old daughter quite enjoyed the book when I read it to her. The story has a straightforward plot, perhaps a bit too simple. In contrast, the language can be at times antiquated, unnecessary flourished and somewhat irrelevant and implausible. This unfortunate combination considerably limits the audience of the book.
This was the last Dick King- Smith book in my collection that I hadn't read and this was one of my least favorite, I think it's because I'm now older and not the intended reader age. The audiobook is good so I definitely recommend checking it out as I quite enjoyed the narrator. I think children would enjoy this as it is funny and about some really sweet animals.
We listened to this book on CD as a family during a road trip. My kids adored it. The story had so much humor, and the narrator did a bang up job with voices. My kids laughed and laughed. This was a good one. I found it clever, too.
Wonderful Dick-King story with an exceptional voice actor named Nigel Anthony. His skills are right there with Jim Dale and the lady (I forget her name) who voice acted the book Smekday. Stellar! Would be great for a road trip or a classroom listening station.
A reread of a childhood favourite of mine. I loved this book so much when I was little. It was such a joy to revisit and enjoy all over again. Not a bit story, bit with some great characters and a lot of fun.
A lovely and fun story to read. I also listen to the Auto tape read by Nigel Lambert he does the characters really well and helps you get really into the story and start to love all the characters in it. I think Nigel Lambert is an excellent reader.
The synopsis of this book does not do it justice. This is the story of a rat catcher and the biggest baby mouse ever. It's funny, exciting and one of the best dks books.
