Alaskan Security-Team Rogue #2

Counterfeit Relations

Rate this book
When you cross lines every day it can be hard to remember what’s real.

And what’s not.

Keeping Eva Tatum safe was supposed to be a simple task. One Brock Cassidy should have been able to do with one arm tied behind his back.

All he had to do was pretend to be her boyfriend.

Show up and bluff away the stalker giving the bull-headed business woman the creeps.

But the more time he spends around her, the less faking Brock is doing.

And protecting the woman who hired him becomes personal.

****

Going to Alaska was just a precaution.

One Eva was forced to take, whether she wanted to or not.

It’s not like there was any real danger. She’d faced crazy once, and this was definitely not it. The situation was completely manageable.

Harmless, really.

But crazy has a way of showing up where it’s not wanted. Where it’s not allowed.

And crazy isn’t allowed within one-hundred feet of Eva. She has the court documents to prove it.

But papers don’t stop madmen intent of claiming what they believe should be theirs.

And taking down anything in their way.

This book was better than the last in the series but I still feel like this author needs to increase the description in her books and dive deeper in character development. It did have a cliff hanger in the end but I wasn’t mad about it. I will read the next book because it’s KU so why not? But hopefully it won’t dwell so much on the fact that these men kill people, we get it already “bad people do bad shit and don’t deserve to live”. I like the hero in this book, the heroine was kooky but again she was undeveloped. And is this series going to be that every client is a damsel in distress that the team then hires because they have a particular set of skills? Skills that we are unclear on except that the fact that they have vaginas means they think differently... I can’t tell if this author is trying too hard or not trying hard enough. But anyway it was a quick read with action and some humorous moments, a snack but not a full meal.

Eva and Brock

Oooh! I love these strong women!

We all know the guys of Alaskan Security are capable, trained operatives who protect people, but who protects them?

Well, in this one, it's Eva who protects Brock. I really enjoy this series and the dangerous ins and outs of this storyline. Eva's investigation company is more deeply involved in the problems that Pierce's company is dealing with, and it takes Mona, Harlow, and Eva to start linking the pieces together. Time is not on their side, as the dangers to the Alaskan Security operations grow.

This book and series are very entertaining and addictive.
It's easy to connect with and lose yourself in these pages. I love it!

Read in order! On to book 3!

Can’t remember the last time I laughed that much in a romance/suspense book! I loved Eva, best strong heroine ever!
The storyline grabbed me really quickly, the sexy parts were very hot, the romance between 2 strong characters was awesome and the mystery part of it means I need the next books lol
Overall, a really great read!

I liked the first book in the series well enough to check out this second book. And it started out pretty interestingly: it began as an exciting five-star book, complete with humor injected into the action. However, the characters did not stay true to themselves and became heavy-handed tools used by the writer to move along the plot. The main leads, Eva Tatum and Brock Cassidy, have a needlessly complicated relationship. Complex would have been fine; but complicated? Not so good. And not so well written.
What brought it down to a three star rating is that without giving away any spoilers, it was obvious who the villain was in this piece and while there are some very smart women headlining the story, including Eva, they just couldn't figure it out. This was so out of character for Eva as she has been portrayed in this book. A second female lead is Harlow, introduced in the first book as a strong, dynamic woman. Here, she is not allowed to figure out what is going on either, something well within her demonstrated capabilities.
Don't get me started on the grammar and typographical errors. Good grief! Proofreader needed here desperately!
But what finally earned the book a two-star rating is the cliffhanger ending. There is no excuse for this except the writer's apparent greed. There is no reason that a logical ending could not have been presented. A good writer can tie up all the loose ends and still make readers clamor for more. But this was not done. The writer took an easy way out. She did not do the work she should have done; she even had the gall to apologize for her actions at the end of the book. For that incredible act of unforgivable hubris, this book has earned its two stars.
P.S. I am going to read the third book. This may be the last book I'll read in this series. The first one I really enjoyed. This second one I really did not. So the third one is to break the tie.

The plots of this series are good. But I'm getting tired of hearing how tough these women are. "Come on girls. Time to go prove our superiority once again." I'm all for having a woman be independent and strong, but Eva takes it to extremes, making her sound like she's bitter to the bone. Life is not all about having to prove how much better you are than anyone born with a Y chromosome. In fact, an emotionally secure and strong woman developing a relationship with a strong man is actually an amazing thing. I've only read the first book one in the series (actually pretty good) and half of this one, but this one takes the cake. Only half way through and I'm already done with Eva's bitchy determination to walk all over men. Okay, I get it. She's been hurt. (Me too). But a really strong woman presses on with her life, determined to become who she really wants to be -- chooses to be-- IN SPITE OF rotten guys' actions. Instead, this tough chick (this term not a compliment) is bitter to the point of hating all men. Then add in Harlow, (another misandrist) and all this man hating is over the top. Both women constantly attempt verbal putdowns on men to make themselves feel big. I'm tempted to DNF, but the plot is actually good, so I'm giving this 2 stars. Not sure I'll continue to the end though. Maybe just read the last 3 pages to see how the plot resolves.

I Am Hooked!!

These guys from Alaskan Security-Team Rogue have a job that leaves them feeling as if they will never be able to have a normal family or life. But when some very strong, take no bull, beautiful women are put into their lives to protect, they are given a chance to see it can be possible. Brock, one of our handsome protectors is given the job of watching over Eva. She is a strong willed woman and one who likes to be honest to a fault. They each have their issues with love. As they work together to stop whoever is not only after Eva but the guys on Team Rogue, their feelings become ones they can't run from. The banter and strong will of these two to have the upper hand and the last word is so darn hysterical, this book had me laughing and crying. I love that the guys of Rogue Team don't try to ignore the strength and intelligence of these women (Eva, Harlow, and Bess) and can see the knowledge, skills, and fun they bring to the group and most importantly the love they end up sharing with their respective guy. The cliffhanger almost made me upset, but since I know their story will continue in Dutch and Harlow's story, I must get starting on their HEA.

Slow and continues in book 3

Started off very slow and dry. Almost put it down several times i figured out Chandler was a bad guy early just not sure what he was after other than the company. Jumps around so you never know whois doing what or why. You never find out who wants the company or why. Continues in the next book which comes out in july. Glad this was a KU. The preface enticed me but not a good story. Wont read the rest.

Book two in this standalone series delivered another suspenseful romance where the stakes were high for not only the main couple, but the entire company at their backs as well. The fast pacing of this book was felt in both the overall plot and the romance, making the story easily flow to its open-ended finale. The romance aspect of this book found its ending with the main couple getting together, but this book could be considered as ending on a cliffhanger as the overall story was technically not resolved and will be completed in the next book. The story was satisfying on its own, however, so it leaves it up to readers to decide if their curiosity is high enough to read another book to get some answers. For those that need them, trigger warnings will be included at the end of my review.

Like the first in the series, the plot of this book delivered another hired bodyguard situation but unlike the first book, readers got a bigger glimpse into the security agency and the dangers surrounding it. The author was able to balance the plot time between the main couple and the supporting characters of this book so when the plot kicked up and intensified, it was hard not to be hooked and invested in finding out the rest of the story.

The romance carried this book in my opinion since I did find the plot somewhat lacking for a standalone. The relationship between the main characters was hard-won and easy all at the same time, creating both longing and steam for readers to enjoy. Like with the first book, this couple had an insta-love attraction but held back from each other to add even more tension to the already intense plot. This couple was a lot of fun to read and I look forward to seeing more of them in the rest of the series.

As for the slight plot cliffhanger, it did make sense within the context of this series, but I wish readers got a bit more information before the end of this book. While the romance was fully rounded and “complete” by the time this book ended, it felt like the plot was lacking and its only purpose was to set-up plot points for the next book. In my opinion, that moves this book from the standalone category since the plot wasn’t resolved at the end of the book. In regards to the overarching plot of the series, I understand why the author ended the book in the way she did but I wish more questions were answered before it happened in order for the book to feel more like a standalone rather than the first part to a duet.

Regardless of that, I really did enjoy this book.

TRIGGER WARNINGS:
Spoilers ahead.

Like in the first book, this book includes language like “crazy” to describe characters acting differently than normal or to explain their high-maintenance personalities. I don’t think the author meant to purposely use harmful or derogatory language to describe her characters, but thought I’d mention it just in case anyone needs a warning. Negative stigma surrounding mental health is harmful for everyone!

This book also includes violence ranging from fist fights to gun fights (on page), attempted kidnapping (on page), mentions of stalking including house break-ins to steal intimate items and unwanted gift giving (on and off page), mentions of death from birth complications (off page), mentions of suicide (off page), light misogyny (on page), and some sexism (on page).

I see the great reviews, and I'm a little confused.

The storyline in this book is all over the place. There's a stalker. There's a suspicious pair of dudes who might be after someone else. There's a snarky corporate partner who seems suspect, and another who is sort of a doormat. There's a security company owner who might be playing multiple sides. Oh, and there are two leads who bicker endlessly, even through sex, which doesn't sound hot or sexy.

This story is headache inducing at its best. I'm not arguing the merits of the author. She's great. I'm arguing that there are roughly 231 directions this story is taking. Sure, it's supposed to be suspenseful, but it's not. It's a can o' worms that keeps circling just like when you flush the toilet.

The two leads are simply put a hot mess. Both have "complicated" love histories. Both are so secretive and casual about their pasts that I lost interest repeatedly. Gaining insight into either of these two is a major effort. That's not interesting, it's annoying. Every single conversation is a childish, bickering argument. Again, not interesting, just annoying. This story feels like high school Tropes Gone Mad.

The female characters are strong and awesome. Apparently each book in this series includes a job offer for the cool female characters.

Best of all, this windey, needlessly complicated, pointless story ends on a CLIFFHANGER. Seriously. Oh yes. With so many frustrations, I don't see the point in reading more books in this series.

Easy-going Brock Cassidy’s puzzled by the file on Eva Tatum, it’s so thin there’s no picture of Eva or details of her problem! Live-out-loud, outspoken Eva thwarts Brock at every turn, convinced she’s in no danger she can’t handle and Brock’s unnecessary. The pair begin a flirty snipe dance before realizing their client/security connection.

After two close calls and an almost irresistible mutual attraction, it’s unclear if the danger is aimed at Eva or Brock. They’ve grown too close to try splitting up to make certain who the target is as they don’t trust each other’s lives to anyone else.

Brock and Eva made sure this is another fun, fast-paced series entry that’s perfect for a solid reading break be it rainy day, snow day or beach-y read. As the team grows, the light style grows on this reader, being a team, Bess and Wade (leads from the last outing) were missed. And eek… cliffhanger!

I am enjoying this series. Brock and Eva are sweet. They both have their issues and seem to be understanding of them. There is still a lot of instalove, but it felt a little less in your face in this book, maybe because I was expecting it more so I could ignore it more!

It's a fun read. One of the things I'm enjoying most about this series is the side characters add a lot of fun. I'm hoping we will see plenty of Wade and Bess in the next one!

I think my struggle with these books is that there just doesn't seem to be enough answers. I know this is in part because it's an ongoing series, but because they have the stand alone romance element to them, I feel like there should be a little more closure.

The villain here, is the stalker, but he has such a small role! Also, Pierce gave them a name, which I figure will be important at some point but it felt forgotten. There is just not enough answers for it to not be frustrating.

I am still reading on though, because I am enjoying them.

Omg the banter!! Best writing style ever!

I love this series and Harlow is one of the greatest characters ever written. I freaking love her. The stuff she says and the random and off the cuff stuff she says is everything. She is my favorite by far! Brock is hot and is as glad to see him be the biscuit and boxers sex on a stick we all know and love. And for the record he is totally charming. So we see the plot thicken and someone is still out for the team. I love pierce and he is building an incredible team. so many characters in the mix I want to see more of. Mona and Pierce have this sexual tension that is undeniable and Dutch and Harlow omg. They are set the world on fire when they get together. Loved this book so much and the series just keeps getting better and better. Bring on book 3

This book is so much better than the first one, it's kind of ridiculous. The characters are more fun and interesting, the stuff happening is more interesting, etc. My biggest problem was how dumb the girls were. You're really telling me Eva didn't notice that she was working alongside her stalker when she knew the guy? Or that they felt like it was safe to open outside doors when the guys were on a mission? The fact they didn't die is honestly impressive.

Side thought: If we could find a way to make fictional characters real so Harlow can be my BFF, that'd be great.

40% Thoughts: I like this book but it seems to have a lot more grammar errors than the first one. The one bugging me the most is using "reign" when the author means "rein." If it was just used once, it likely wouldn't have caught my attention but the word is used quite a bit and I haven't yet seen it used correctly.

Broccoli and Sunshine

The thot plickens... This is a great continuation of a really terrific series of romance/thrillers. The characters keep the reader involved because the need to know more and how and who just keeps getting better, and more intriguing. Brock seemed a bit light hearted in Wade's story, so it is especially funny how Eva keeps accusing him of being "not fun". I'm well and truly hooked, and will no doubt be getting all the rest of the stories as they are released. (drumming fingers) Are they done yet?

Counterfeit Relations

She's business partners sent her to Alaska for protection from her stalker. Brock is assigned to protect her. They get along like oil and water - not at all! That is until Eve realizes she really is in trouble and needs help, oh and they both try to hide their feelings for for the other. As they face several challenges and grow closer they are still trying to figure out where the problems are coming from and how to stop it.
The end of this book is way too soon but we are promised it will be better in the next book.

Sassy and strong

The women are a true force in this series and the second book shows they are just getting started. There is the problem that is the cause for hiring the security team, but there is also the overarching problem that the entire company is facing. The ending ends with a lot unsolved, but the romance is defined. Havoc is quickly becoming my favorite character and I look forward to seeing how her and Dutch work out. Not sure how Pierce and Mona will be, but hey so far the characters and couples are great entertainment.

Quick read and fun

Fast paced and full of action and suspense

This book had me hooked from page 1! Brocks character was fun to watch in book 1 and that doesn't change in this book however we get to see a different more vulnerable side to him to. Eva is awesome, fiesty, sassy and incapable of lying. Together they make an incredible couple.

I will warn you the author leaves alot of questions unanswered in this book but does promise to tie them up in the next one, which I can't wait for. Its got to be Harlow turn to take down one of our hotties ❤️

great read. Reviewed by Beth not Elree

I'm tell you now, if you're on the fence reading these books then jump off on the side of reading them.

I'm only on the 2nd book and I've enjoyed them and will continue my adventure with the next one.

1. Loved the fast pace
2. Loved when I found something to giggle or laugh out loud about.
3. The main characters from both books were great. I really like that they wrote some strong minded females who knew their worth.

Join the adventure along side of Alaska Security...

4 to a 5

It took me a few chapters to warm up to Eva. I don't know why really other than maybe because Brock wasn't the Brock from book 1? Not really sure. I was very disappointed to not see Bess, Wade, and Parker. I hope this series doesn't turn into one of those where one people couple up, we no longer see them.

I know most liked this couple better than Wade and Bess, but I think book 1 is still my favorite, although, Mr. Pierce...I am at the edge of my seat ready for...on to Harlow and Dutch!!

Steamy Suspense

I love the continuation of this series. Past characters are involved but don’t overshadow the main couple. This story had fantastic steamy suspense with a bada$$ heroine. Only negative for me (and I have never had this issue with any book I have ever read) I absolutely HATE the pet name she gives Brock! And to compound the issue, it’s used way to frequently. Poor guy.

Absolutely loving this series.

Absolutely loving this series. With the second book we are getting to know the characters better, with the addition of a few new faces.

This one is Brock and Eva’s story for the most part and it’s a good one. Had some laughs and some tears!

We are seeing the building of the team coming along, but also the intensity of the threat too.

Can’t wait to start Enemy Territory, I need more lol.

What a great continuation from book one!!

Great read, the character build is amazing, the back and forth banter of the main characters really pulls you in. As the story progresses you see the relationship blossom between Brock and Eva while the whole team works to uncover who is behind the stocking of her & attempted takeover of her company. The ending is a good hanger and I can't wait to see what comes next!

Grumpy-growly meets Smart-sassy (continued)

Forced Proximity/ fake Relationship

The Second in the Alaskan Security Team Rogue series doesn’t disappoint.
The chemistry between Brock and Eva is supercharged. Once again Jemma Westbrook/Janice Whiteaker strike a perfect balance between bossy alpha males and super smart, sexy, competent women, creating couples who work best when they work together.

I like the author but not the FMC. She arrives in ALASKA and has to be told 3x that ALASKA is cold and she should put a coat on. The idiot FMC in fact doesn’t run on logic and did not wear a coat. Next morning, blames the MMC for no coat. She isn’t sassy or feisty. She’s unlikable. And if you’re giving a character a IDGAF attitude, let her use it at all times. Why does the MMC like her? I don’t know. I may stop the series here.

I loved it 🥰

This book is awesome! The second-book in the series is just as good as the first with all the excitement and adventure. Everyone of the characters are strong and with a sense of humor that is amazing 😉 The story grabs you quick and won’t let go! I can’t wait for the next book 📖

A good read

The author did leave us hanging a little but she apologizes and the next book comes out tomorrow so she's forgiven! I am hoping Pierce will have a story at some point? I do think the author needed to give us a little more background on the main characters. It helps the reader make connections.

Awesome!

This was as much of a rom-com as a romantic suspense book. Eva and Brock were terrific. There is much humor and the female characters provide most of that. There is a continuing story line that starts in Loss Recovery so I don’t think these books re entirely stand alone. Highly recommend these books.

OMG! I can't even . . 😆🤣😂

I think I have found a new author!
The snark, 🔥 from the sexual attraction, suspense, sarcasm, snort laughs at the banter, on going thread of mystery, boughts of action by the hottness of hunks of ALPHA military men worked by a deft hand in this series is such a refreshing breath of fresh air!
Bessie, Harlow and Eva are my new heroines!

Oh a cliff hanger ! I love this series and need to hurry up this review so I can get onto Dutch and Harlow. Eve and Brock are such an interesting couple and the feelings are so strong you can feel them as you read. I got the side eye from a few people when gram-grams kill shot was discussed and I literally laughed out loud . Great book awesome series.
