The Vengeful Robin

Rate this book
The red hair I got from my mother.
The revenge I got, I would take happily.
Humiliated and beaten, I watched helplessly as the self-imposed King took everything from me.
Then with the help of friends, I made my escape into the quiet night.
Three months later, and truths come to light that had me questioning everything I thought I knew.
But one thing remains the same.
I would get my revenge and everyone would remember my name.
For I was Robin Locks.

I thought of dropping more than once but I made it to the end. Unfortunately.
From the very beginning I just did not enjoy the book. I did not like the writing, the world building, the heroine and the other characters. Everything.

It's a Robin Hood retelling. But also not really. I cannot be entirely certain because except for the names, I guess I forgot everything about the original story. Or I did not and the book is just confusing me. Who knows.

It's paranormal but also a bit on the science-fiction side. They talk about shifters but they also have guns and probably flame throwers. The country is said to have a phenomenal scientific advance on the rest of the world and people are already getting vaccinated.

It's the twelfth century. But stangely enough, out of everything, the weirdest thing is that the characters speak like nowadays: they use words and phrasing that probably weren't invented yet.

And I hated that.

I also hated Robin. And Jon. It's war and they manage to spend two thirds of the book on unresolved feelings and whining in their own corner. Jon is just lame and Robin is only standing out by her red hair. She is unable to be the leader people needs, to be the villain, the soldier or the princess but also unable to be the heroine of her own story.

And the end... The end made me feel all was just a big waste of time. If you are not a fan of cliffhanger, I would most definitely wait for the second book to be available. You would just hate it.

I received and ARC in exchange of an honest review.

Robin is a feisty yet broken character that you will fall in love with. The trials she goes through and the men who are loyal to a fault, make this story a unique and entertaining retelling of the robin hood story. The world we're brought into has so much detail and intrigue that you won't be able to put this book down. If you love story retellings, loveable characters, evil villains and an adventure... This is the book for you. Loved the RH and shifter concepts and can't wait to see what happens next! Excellent story and highly recommended!

This is an incredible reimagining of the classic Robin Hood tale! It has science and supernaturals mixed in with a vengeful princess plot and the classic Robin armed with a bow.

This story enchanted me throughout. The action scenes are vivid and bloodthirsty, while the emotional moments made me weep for characters I got to love. I can't wait to see where this world takes me in the next book!

Think science-fantasy for an MTV audience and you'd have something like this book. You remember when they did that Shannara Chronicles adaptation? Yeah, like that. You'll either roll with it or be put off by the modern Americanisms. I thought I'd be in the latter camp, but the writing drew me in such a way that I could shrug off most of the misgivings I had about language and just enjoy the story for the strange mish-mash it was - if "enjoy" is the right word when some dark themes are present.

Because be warned, there are a lot of mentions of rape and/or sexual violence that, while not for the most part graphic, are quite disturbing. There are two chapters from the villain's POV that is downright sickening with his detailed musings on how to use and abuse people of both genders. Another chapter from the victim of female-against-male sexual abuse was similarly disquieting. That left a sour note in my feelings about this story.

It's also inspired by Robin Hood in name only; literally character names, as there's no robbing the rich to feed the poor or mainstay characters like the Sheriff of Nottingham/Guy of Gisbourne/Will/Alan/Friar Tuck.

So what is it about? Robin Lock was once many things: saviour of abused women, decorated soldier, princess of the Kingdom of Fraser. After her father's death and her Uncle John's orchestrated coup, she's little more than a broken shell of who she was. Forced to witness foul deeds against her family and endure worse herself, she was rescued with the help of her now ex-lover Jon Little and a soldier known as Smite. Her uncle's court has routinely abused other women in their power, and Robin's determined to save them with the help of some not so merry men. If only she could ignore her broken heart's confusion and make sense of the strange revelations about the group she's come to rely upon.

Not going to lie, the setting and modern American slang threw me at first. All this talk of getting "shots" and "guys" saying "yeah" one minute before being formal and "mayhaps" fantasy-ish the next was strange. Add in some steampunk bits and talk of shifters later on and... well, it's different. Very MTV/American video game fantasy (Torchlight anyone?) I kind of wish the language had been more consistent and less modern urban fantasy as that would have helped, or else it was made obvious that it was the Shannara style post-apocalypse modern world where fantasy elements had taken over rather than stating it was an alternate 12th century. I can't fault the creativity though, and it did gel in a strange sort of way.

Backstories and romances could be a little confusing too - how long had Robin been helping the women? How long had she and Jon been, y'know, a thing before her uncle took over and allowed terrible things to happen to her? How did they even meet? And why oh why did she still make sighing soliloquies about Jon when he was being such a vile ass?

I liked that Robin was unsure of herself. She's not quite your usual butt-kicker in that she's good physically, but emotionally she's not infallible. She has no definite purpose or sense of direction, just the idea that she should do something even though she's not sure what she wants in the end (be it politically or romantically). Her romantic inclinations are so obvious and she could be a bit repetitive about some of them, but I didn't feel like she was OTT or letting it in to the story any more than it was meant to. You can tell there's a reverse harem simmering along but it's not in the realms of ridiculous (unless you really hate the idea of many men all liking the same woman - in which case why are you reading reverse harem?)

The ending is one of those sudden end-of-chapter types without resolution which was a horrible thing to do and again that's a souring note to an otherwise pretty decent grimdark/fluff hybrid that really grabbed my attention.

Overall an easy to read romance/paranormal/fantasy hybrid that was strangely addictive.

Started off slow

Ended with a bang and a cliffhanger so im not too happy with that. I also could not tell who was who i terms of love interest, there were almost too many people to figure out.

Great read

I really loved this retelling of Robin Hood. It sucked me into their world. I can't wait to read the next book, and I'm hoping for a miracle for 1 character.

A retelling of the legend of Robin Hood with quite a few quirky twists to the original tale. The location and place names have been changed (of course) and the characters have either switched gender or some of the bad guys are the good guys now and vice versa. The intrepid heroine is Robin Locks, former princess now an outlaw of the kingdom of Fraser. Her uncle Prince John, now King John, had her father assassinated and his nieces killed except for Robin who was rescued by Jon, her friend and erstwhile lover. Unknown to Robin, Jon is the leader of a camp of shifters banned from Fraser by her own family, a camp that becomes refuge for the scores of women Robin and her allies rescue from the brutal enslavement by the royals and their cruel guards. An excellent and well related version of Robin Hood. I really liked it!

OMG LOVED!!

So Robin is downright amazing!! With all that has been revealed to her and the things that were done, even though she's struggled she is still incredibly strong!! I really loved this book and finished it in one reading, I just could not out of down!! I really liked the selection of possible men in her harem and am glad Jon got a wake up call because he was pissing me off!! And just when everything went to crap, but started to feel like it would all be ok if wasn't!! That ending was devastating was not expecting that, and I cannot wait for the next book because I need to know what happens next and see them take down the false king and his people!! Soo please hurry with the next book!!

P.S. He's not really dead is he??!!??!! 😢😩😥😰🐱🐈😢😰

Our heroine has been beaten and deposed, but all is not lost. When she returns, woe be unto those who trespassed against her.

This is a retelling of the Robin Hood story in an fantasy setting complete with paranormal creatures. The story is very well written and easy to read, although devotees of the original Robin Hood legend might get confused as some of the characters have been changed around. For myself, I loved it and had no problem adapting to the new take. The characters are wonderful, particularly our heroine, who is tough and resourceful, just like I want a heroine to be. Overall, it was highly enjoyable and I look forward to more by this author.

Highly recommended.

Thoroughly enjoyed this book

This was an amazing book to read. It makes me want to jump in the adventure myself and get involved with the twists and turns of this superb story telling. I love the new take on the notorious Robin Hood which could have been bland but is the very opposite. Erica has nailed down the need for a$$ female heroine. She expertly delivers and captives. I look forward to the next book. Definitely a series to be reckoned with.

Love, love, love.
I never thought that I’d like a Robin Hood retelling.
This book has great characters, an intriguing plot and strong world building.
I loved the angst in parts of romance and am excited to read more from this author.

Highly recommend you give this a try.
