On the morning of the Netherfield ball, Elizabeth Bennet is surprised when Mr. Darcy appears on Oakham Mount. In the course of their conversation, the two clear up the misunderstandings between them. When Darcy asks for the first dance, Elizabeth regretfully informs him that her cousin, Mr. Collins, has already requested that set. Darcy can tell how little Elizabeth desires to dance with the gentleman and offers to assist in extricating her.
Mr. Collins is quick to believe Mr. Darcy's words concerning Lady Catherine's opinion of the parson's choice of the outspoken Miss Elizabeth. However, upon discovering that Mr. Darcy is himself interested in Elizabeth, Mr. Collins steps in to stop the blossoming romance. When he faces Darcy's wrath for his behavior, the parson calls in reinforcements in the form of his esteemed patroness, Lady Catherine de Bourgh.
The mischief that ensues causes one disruption after another, but nothing can stand in the way of a love destined to be.
Not much new here. Lizzy and Darcy get together pretty early then there are various people who try to derail our dear couple‘s relationship.
They never truly seem to be in any danger of not staying a couple. The bad guy plans never work, the good guys plans always work.
There isn’t much misunderstanding between Darcy and Lizzy. Very low angst. Everything happens so quickly there isn’t much time for character development.
If you are looking for some of the author’s best work try my favorite book of hers , “Her Unforgettable Laugh”.
Warning: Meant for mature audiences. Contains scenes that would scandalize the ton. Readers of a delicate constitution are advised to keep their fans and vinaigrettes close at hand.
It was so enticing that I couldn’t put it down, this book grabbed my interest from the very first page. I couldn’t put it down, I had to know what happened next. The story is well written with a very good storyline. You will see the most beloved characters in a whole new way. This is a Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice variation. It’s a must read. I highly recommend to everyone.
I liked the general plot idea that started it all but the romance feels a little flat, unemotional. The most important scene between ODC happens when Darcy and Elizabeth spoke in private before Bingley's ball and were able to settle their differences and dance more amicably. Afterwards it's just other people causing trouble. Both Darcy and Elizabeth attempt to put Collins off courting Elizabeth's favor and Wickham makes an appearance at the ball but Collins invites Lady Catherine to cause trouble. Several people get assaulted, Miss Bingley gets a setdown and Darcy is able to get rid of both Wickham and Lady Catherine so they won't bother him anymore.
There are some minor continuity errors. Someone calls a doctor named Townshend but his name is Sullivan when he arrives. When Collins gets evicted from Longbourn several days go by peacefully afterwards but when he returns he had been evicted the same day. How did Lydia already fancy herself in love with Wickham when he had been in town for a very short time? Somebody gets engaged and married the same day or so, without banns or a licence. The frequent remarks that Collins should keep hovering over Mary at the ball seemed a little improper and ill advised.
It is so much fun when an author doesn't care about canon in favor of sharing a small tale full of amusements, full of moments that cement a relationship that might or might not have been found without them. Though there was violence and the worst of occurrences for the family, so, too, was there a couple that found in each other the strength to overcome a whirlwind of unpleasantness. It was the earl's wisdom that had me laughing out loud, and I may find my way back to it one day.
I always enjoy a variation where Elizabeth and Darcy become friends (at least) in the early chapters of the book, then it is fun to watch their relationship grow. I also enjoy seeing Anne blossom into a healthy woman. I didn't know what to expect from the title of this book, but I really enjoyed it.
I completely loved this story. I found this to have little humour hidden from beginning to end. I loved how Darcy and Elizabeth found peace, but I LOVED how Darcy handles the issues. Well written and highly recommended to read. You will enjoy your reading
