Finding Your Treasure: Our Family's Mission to Recycle, Reuse, and Give Back Everything―and How You Can Too

Rate this book
Join pastor’s wife, mother of four, and entrepreneur, Angel Williams, on a journey of faith, frugality, and family, as she finds treasure in the most unexpected places.

We live in a society where it’s not uncommon to buy something one week and throw it away the next. We constantly throw out serviceable and even valuable items without a second thought. But to Angel Williams that’s an opportunity.

Angel started dumpster diving out of curiosity when a woman at church mentioned it to her, but it quickly turned into a sizeable side-business to help support her growing, blended family. She learned quickly that dumpster diving is far from a last resort for those in unfortunate circumstances. It can be a fun and profitable family activity!

In Finding Your Treasure , Angel shares how dumpster diving fits into her family’s Christian mission, how she started her business, and the moral case for reusing and recycling what your neighbors throw away. With a focus on faith and community, Angel opens up about her own journey, from starting to dive to growing her own YouTube following.

Angel shares her most amazing finds, including $1,000 cash , designer handbags, and even toys and furniture for her family. She’ll take you through where you can find the best places to dive, how to pick which items to sell or donate, how to put safety first, and where you can find your own local community of fellow divers.

Finding Your Treasure is an exuberant and fascinating look at one family's mission for re-use, upcycling, and recycling. Due out 1st Aug 2021 from Simon & Schuster on their Tiller Press imprint, it's 144 pages and will be available in hardcover, audio, and ebook formats. It's worth noting that the ebook format has a handy interactive table of contents as well as interactive links and references throughout. I've really become enamored of ebooks with interactive formats lately; it makes it so easy to find information with the search function.

There don't seem to be many people in doubt about the unsustainability of our current obsession with consumption and reckless disregard for the finite resources of our planet. It's popular to re-use, recycle, upcycle, and be thrifty these days. Angel Williams is an icon in the thrifting and "dumpster diving" crowd. This book is a sort of how-to for thrifting, recycling, and dumpster diving, liberally interspersed with her pithy and philosophical thoughts about resources, life, faith, the meaning of everything, and living frugally and compassionately.

Much of the book is anecdotal (but undoubtedly true - it's full of photographs). She lists some of her finds (and her followers' finds - one found a Hermes Birkin with $2300 in it 0.o) and talks about how to identify the best spots to dumpster dive (more of an art than science, and know your neighborhoods). She also spends a fair bit of time on personal safety and taking sensible precautions (be wary of retail dumpsters - some of them could be compactors and it's not worth risking your life jumping into those no matter what you might find).

The book is also full of photos of Ms. Williams and some of her family.

I enjoyed reading this personal memoir and how-to and admire her spirit. Some readers might find her discussion of her faith surplus to requirements, but I found it salient, especially as it relates to her philanthropy (donating to those in need), her strength, and her resolve in adversity.

Five stars. Even for readers who don't intend to don a face shield and heavy leather gloves, there are some good takeaways here on living frugally and responsibly on our overloaded planet with shrinking resources.

Three Words: Practical - Inspirational - Relevant

I am not a diver nor do I plan become one; yet I still found this book delightful and easy to read. I liked learning about the topic of diving and how Angel is using it to enhance her family’s life and those in need. This book provides a practical guide for recycling and reusing no matter what stage of a product’s lifecycle one finds themselves entering and exiting.

Disclosure: I received this book from a Goodreads giveaway.

A dose of thrifting with a sprinkle of faith! I found this book very interesting. While I don't think I will find myself dumpster diving anytime soon I live in a very rural area), I do find the process intriguing and I am all about sustainability and reuse. I will pass this book on.

Thank you to Angel Williams (and her family) and Tiller Press/Simon and Schuster for a copy of Finding Your Treasure.
I was not aware of who Angel Williams was but am a huge fan of minimalism, Dave Ramsey and Recycle/Reuse so was excited to read this book. I've read many books on those topics but Mrs. Williams' book specifically focused on "dumpster-diving" which I had not read up on yet.
I loved the easy read of this book - it's like having a conversation with a friend. I appreciated the history of her faith and church as well as her complete explanation of dumpster-diving.
This book is hopeful and another great avenue of recycling/reusing as well as helping yourself financially.

I won this book from a Goodreads giveaway and was a little skeptical at first. Dumpster diving? The only thing I picture are the dumpsters behind fast food restaurants. However, this book really opened my eyes about the waste Americans generate. Angel Williams also gives some great tips on how to start your own dumpster diving journey-including the cleanliness. I personally appreciated the constant thanks to God for the treasures she has found along the way. I really enjoyed this quick read and plan to always be keeping my eye out for discarded items in my community.

A goodreads giveaway winner I found this to be an excellent, honest and humble book on the ways and why’s of dumpster diving. Angel Williams shares her family business and honors God with her actions and words. Her success is providing for her family and community is apparent in her donations of income from proceeds of found items and her donations of time helping in shelters. Good lessons to pass on to her children and everyone else.

This book is such an awesome and easy read from an awesome woman. I love reading about one of my favorite Youtubers. I started watching her YouTube channel back in 2013 when I first learned about dumpster diving, and seeing the crazy things that end up in the garbage. This book tells her story from faith and learning how to reuse, recycle, and re-purpose.

This book about Angel and her passion for finding treasures in other people’s trash is inspiring and helpful. Angel gives us helpful hints on finding our own “treasures” as well as what we can do with our finds. She donates not only her time but also her finds to help other people. Local shelters, her church, and many others are blessed by what she finds on the trash. Great little book!

I thoroughly enjoyed this book by Angel Williams. I did not expect to like it as dumpster diving brings up some disgusting visuals but she almost has me hooked. I did like her storytelling throughout the book and she and her family are an inspiration to many.

This is such a heart-warming book. I loved how short and to-the-point Angel kept her words. It did feel better suited for other mediums like podcasts, YouTube shows, and social media posts but I enjoyed reading it nonetheless.

Most of the book was about her internet following, repeating how many she has, sharing what her internet following say about her. This is marketing for her internet channels. There were a couple chapters of her explaining why she does it and how.

I am giving it a 3 star review.
It's a very entertaining book and Angel Williams seems like a very caring and loving person.
I loved learning about dumpster diving, is very interesting everything that she has found.
But there were a few things that stood out:
The book doesn't really read like a book, it's more like several blog or social media posts put together, also there are a lot of Instagram pictures, captions and comments throughout the book.
I would have prefered a book with new information and not relying on social media posts, comments from followers or youtube videos she's shared before.
