3.5 STARS The illustrations are lovely! Very gentle, sweet details, old-fashioned and inviting. The story itself was an interesting premise as the "patchwork lady" does a variety of things to get ready for a party. I like the contrasting "patchworks" in her life, like how the brooms in the cupboard are crisscrossed, or how the light through the window falls in squares on the floor... but I would have preferred just a plain storytelling narrative rather than the little interjections of the patchwork lady which seemed odd to me.
One of my favorites as a child that I now get to read with my daughter. The story is beautifully written in lyric, descriptive language that I find as engaging now as I did when I was young. The illustrations are beautiful and as a whole, this book is a lovely way to encourage all readers to slow down and take joy in the simple details of life.
