Major Levi Cohen readies to retire after twenty years of peacetime service to the Terran Coalition. With mere weeks remaining, he allows himself the luxury of imagining the days alongside his wife and eight-year-old son instead of separated by duty. He promised that this year he wouldn’t miss another one of David’s birthdays – and he intends to keep his word.
His plans are cut short when the League of Sol sends a massive force of warships into Coalition territory. The only chance they have is to drag every available ship from mothballs and pray their superior technology will carry the day.
Stand Firm sets the stage for an epic, star-spanning war that tests the mettle and faith of the far-flung descendants of Earth. One man's story burns brightly in the crucible of conflict. What price will he pay to save his family and his planet?
450 years after fleeing Earth the colonists of the Terran Coalition Homeworld find themselves under attack. They may have fled the coop but Earth hasn't forgiven them. 1,000 space ships are approaching fast and less than half of that number, many of them recalled to service, are available to defend. There are, however, two things in the Terrans' favour, 1. their technology is more advanced (enough to help considerably but not enough to win), and 2. the approaching fleet is controlled by fanatical political officers with no experience of warfare. At the centre of “Stand Firm” is Major Levi Cohen - after 20 years of service he's recalled to the front on the day before he is due to return to civilian life. He's in command of the thirty-year-old Galahad class destroyer Salamis, one of the older ships in the battle. Surprisingly, at least to me, is that the Terran Coalition seem to have brought their religions with them to their new homes. I would have thought/hoped that an advanced technological society would have put such foolishness behind them. And, of course, god is never blamed for the trials facing the Terran Coalition! It's driven by action and is little more than a taster for the 'Echoes of War' series. It's interesting enough for me to continue reading. 3 Stars.
When a force attacks, your only option for survival is to attack with all means possible. Semper Fi
I enjoyed this book from beginning to end, This book explains the why and what dor for the war. The stage is being set in this book for the basic reasons for an epic space war adventure. Why Major Levi Cohen on the brink of retirement is called upon to make a great sacrifice, watching his son salute him as he left home in his uniform, was an interesting start to the story.
Never mine the detracting book reviews, this author is creating a story where he first starts explaining about the reason for the war and showing the background of Major Cohen character, he also is setting up the story line for future book releases in this series and continues to build about the who, what, and why of good story telling, including returning character in future.
Just the story of an enemy called the League of Sol with their massive warships force encroaching into Terran Coalition space, Why? This is the reason for this book to answer those three question for the series. This is not a complicated story. Just a story with interesting characters. Every victory requires a sacrifice.
Stand Firm (Echoes of War Book 0). My fourth read from author Daniel Gibbs, the prequel to the Echoes of War series. An outstanding, enjoyable short read! I was given a Kindle copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review." The gifting of this book did not affect my opinion of it. The book was well-written & flowed smoothly & quickly laying out the background for the series. I grew up reading C.S. Forester’s Hornblower books. As a young adult I was captivated by Alexander Kent’s Bolitho books, never getting enough of them. This series will stand the same test of time those books did, and I look forward to more books in this series as well as others from this author. (RIP Marley January 20, 2014 - July 24, 2018).
Major Levi Cohen was in command Of the Coalition Star Vessel Salamis a 30-year-old Gala-had class destroyer. The Terran coalition had not fought a real war for nearly 50 years. All of a sudden over a thousand ships from the World Society were on their way to destroy the Terran Coalition. No one on the planet below knew what was happening in the space above and what could possibly happen to them. This is a short story of the start of a new war and what the Terran Coalition was going to do. Daniel Gibbs has written an excellent story on par with his other books and I look forward to reading more of what he's written...
Stand Firm: Echoes of War Book Zero is about a free society which faces a threat from a totalitarian regime. The ancestors of the free people fled Earth long ago to escape tyranny and now tyranny is knocking on the door.
The Tyrannical regime from Earth is very similar to Communism under the Soviet Union. If you think Communism is a good idea this book will offend you terribly
This novel shows characters on both sides of the conflict. I found myself engaged with the human struggles of them all. This is a great military Sci-Fi read.
Nicely done short story with good flow and character development. I think the author did a fantastic job of creating a story that would bring the reader into his series and world setting. My only complaint would be that the transitions between settings, time frames, and character were a bit rough sometimes.
Excellent space war story. The League of Sol attacks the Terran Coalition . Old ships must be taken out of mothballs and even so the Coalition has fewer ships although they do have better technology. Only time will tell how it will turn out. Well worth reading.
Well in my normal backwards style as I seem to do things I finally read the prequel to Echos of War. Like the rest it was a good read with a plot you can get into.
I started off enjoying the book. Nothing complicated but it was shaping up to be an interesting read. Then the two sides in a war started to be described and my interest level dwindled considerably. While I expect two sides (or more) in a conflict, I also expect that a few hundred years out we would see some sort of different political make up. Unfortunately, what we have here is the “superior” (morally, technically...) US type government (president, congress, etc) and the other side being a China type government (political officers, social party leaders controlling all, kill your family if you don’t toe the line, etc). And don’t get me started on the religious overtones (although it seem ls that religious conflict has disappeared). This set up significantly degraded the story to the point that I didn’t want to finish and most certainly don’t want to pick up future books. Too bad. Could have been a very interesting journey. Was almost. 2 star but could have been a 4 star.
I found this disappointing in that the story was not as well written or original as it could have been and felt trite. It did introduce David Cohen and more importantly, it introduced the man who most profoundly influenced David Cohen's life - his father - in the pivotal action that set David on the course that results in the Echoes of War series. This was an adequate introduction; fortunately the series is much better written and more compelling to read.
The only reason this one got 4 stars was because it was not long enough. It is a very good sci fi book that is super entertaining. Plenty of action and the main character is superb. The whole book is dedicated to leading up to a really fine finish. Not a long read but it is very good book. This is a prequel and it reads like it will make a fine series.
