"L'oeil du paon"/ "The eye of the peafowl" by Lilia Hassaine
This is the story of Hera, a young, reckless, Croatian girl who moves from her island, a secluded safe haven for peafowls, to Paris, in order to escape a deadly curse. But as she purses her passion for photography, and begins to build herself a life in the French capital, she becomes more and more self-centered, selfish, and proud. and that's what this novel wants to be: the modern cautionary tale on the dangers of pride.
However, it falls short to this goal. The characters are very clichés and expected in a modern novel (the child victim of pedophilia, the closeted homosexual, the beautiful successful independent girl), many events are very predictable, and the ending is abrupt, weird and a bit haphazard.
As someone who watches the tv show LeQuotidien, I can see that the writer Lilia Hassaine has put all her being in this book. References to her job (tv journalist), multiple hair description (she has very long black hair) etc... and that she is a huge fan of literature. There are literary references in every page, from Jane Eyre to Proust, multiple characters are avid readers, including one former librarian. However, every good reader cannot claim to be a good writer. This is her first novel, it's written elegantly, poetically, Hassaine is still very young, so I am excited to read the following novels, once she will have fully completed the transformation.
