John Kobal was an Austrian-born British based film historian responsible for The Kobal Collection, a commercial photograph archive related to the film industry.
The photos in this book were created between the mid-thirties and early 50's.
The early color photos exhibit color casts and fairly pedestrian lighting whether due to early film stock limitations or simply the result of time and perhaps less than optimal storage conditions.
There is a nice introduction by Carlos Clarens on technicolor. The essays on individual actors is done by John Kobal and reflect his fascination with the old studio star system and its' products.
The photos are pleasant enough but are not as dramatic and personality revealing as some of the black and white work being done at the same time.
