Halek Cain has one chance to save the people he loves.
The Alon Empire has redoubled its efforts to conquer Yansden and strip the planet bare. Their massive fleet devours every star system it encounters. They demand total surrender and show no mercy. The Neverseen are rising from the forests, oceans, and desert wilderness and thirsty for blood. Cain and his allies have stopped both of these enemies once, but their backs are to the wall and they must escape or die.
Recently acquired from the ancient ruins in the planet's interior, the Black Phoenix grows more powerful every day, draining Cain and X-37 of resources even as it gives them the tools to win battles and find Maglan.
But winning might kill them both in the end.
Will Cain master himself and his cybernetic modifications to run the blockade? Can he find Maglan and liberate one Sansein in return for an alliance that will protect the exodus fleet forever? The Last Reaper's end has finally arrived.
Oh boy this was a rollercoaster, Briggs was my favorite character besides Halek and i was devastated how he died, yes thats how usually it goes in war and real combat.. a bullet, a spear, death, when you least expect it, not heroic, but random and tragic.. But it just took me by surprise...He survived trough so much and i knew he would die eventually, but i thought he would die fighting off a horde of enemies to help his friends, or at least get a really epic heroic death scene, the poor guy deserved so much more... it just made me so sad how he died randomly, like a side character, and no one spoke of him after, but few thoughts from reaper himself... The romance thing with Tatiana had me really rolling my eyes, no contact and 'sudden attraction' to someone, okay i get that people fall in 'love' on first sight but their relationship connection seemed so vague that i dont know why she was kept in the loop as a romantic interest at all , didnt understand Cain's strong attraction to her at all as i thought of her just a side character and a filler, totally unmemorable and not really important...It would make more sense if Coronas was somehow the LI or someone who actually stayed around and had more interaction with Halek. The banter with Z1 , X and Cain was the absolute best, i just loved their interactions and some of them just made me laugh out loud, the ending was good but a bit abrupt, thought the whole phoenix thing would be its own book, the confrontation and freeing the mother, i certainly didnt expect the book to end so peacefully, but seeing how the next book started... We're in for a doozy. Other than the odd romance moments, the book was awesome from start to finish.

If you're waiting for just one more good review before jumping into the Reaper series, jump Now! Some really good writing and one section that caused me to burst out laughing so hard and loud my DW said she almost ... wet herself. Just recalling the conversation between Reaper and the AI, Z1, has resulted in a huge grin. I don't know who came up with the dialogue, but Z1 not understanding searching for body parts was awesome. Messrs. Chaney and Moon, thank you.
My initial assessment that the Last Reaper series felt like it was related to an old time, really Old Time, Saturday Matinee turned out to be correct. I would say this was the great grandson of an even older "penny dreadful" series.
For those who think I may be speaking in tongues, don't worry. My references are to an addictive sort of action and adventure series that you will enjoy.
The series starts out about a "Life Without Parole" and confined in solitary prisoner, guilty of multiple assassinations and truly deplorable practices - but all while under the direction of the controlling political entity, "The Union". The Reaper series of hit persons was so good at what it did that politicians became afraid of their frankenstein creations and caused all but Reaper Cain to be destroyed.
A lone Reaper with a Limited Artificial Intelligence hardwired into his upgraded nervous system, dependent on no one and caring for no one, gradually changes into someone able to be socially acceptable. Throughout our galaxy and into galaxies far away, Reaper impacts everyone and everywhere he goes
Hal finds himself in a lot of trouble again, partly because he doesn’t understand women. Somehow, Tatiana gets herself assigned to a ship in the same squadron as him but they never seem to have the time to talk. His mother and sister are also in the same squadron which means that he’s happy but also worried that something will happen to all the people that he cares most about. In fact he has never had so many people in his life who he cares about and who care about him. The Alon are the most ruthless force that he has ever come across and it becomes obvious that Yansden needs to be evacuated sooner rather than later. He still has to get to Maglan and free the Sansein Mother while fighting her captor. Before he can think of doing that he comes face to face with the Alon emperor and is forced to allow Elise to become a hostage while the emperor’s cousin goes with him. To complicate matters he then finds himself in the presence of the Sansein Shadow Council and only escapes with his life when they accept that he is genuine in his wish to free the Mother. Battles on land and battles in space! A good space opera. Is there more ahead for the Last Reaper? We’ll obviously have to wait and see.
As Halek Cain, along with the usual group works on organizing the mass evacuation of the people of Yandsen while under constant pressure by the Alon attacking them they struggle against the horrific weather that has resulted from possible Alon tech. Cain is in frequent conflict with Z1, the AI that operates the Black Phoenix’s systems. In passing Z1 tells Cain that if they actually manage to reach Maglan he will have to contend with another, even more powerful Silver Phoenix that will likely be fully operational. Since he’s already been nearly rendered unconscious by just running some of the BP drones and systems that is a serious concern. Not giving spoilers I won’t go into details, but the book has the only non-cliffhanger ending that is rather positive & I liked it. Of course I plan on reading the rest of the series though!
Hmm. Not too.sure what to make of this book's ending and the Megland story arc. On one side, it dragged on longer than it should have, on the other it suddenly ended after 10 books leading up to the final confrontation. Just over 90% of this book was Cain and company fighting all odds to get to their Utopia. He arrives and in less than a chapter, best its champion, saves the day, then is next scene tending his crops on his farm. I'm not sure what i expected, but i thought there would be more. But is i was being honest, the ending was no surprised considering how the author wrapped other story arcs in the previous 9 books.
But wait, there a few more books after this, I wonder where Cain is going next.
The Alon Emperor continues to wage war on Cain and the others. The sandwich als byo put in an appearance. He finds out that silver phoenix is black Phoenix's brother. A delegation meets with the Alon president and Elise is take as a hostage while they broker a suspension of active warfare... Meanwhile the plans to rescue mother are set in motion... Only time will tell how successful their plan is... Some space battles, some armed combat and plenty of action occurr....
Oh wow! I picked up the beginning of this series just a few short weeks ago and raced with the Reaper across galaxies. The best review I can offer goes like this: Join the Reaper and his team, travel to interesting places, meet fascinating characters, enjoy stimulating battles that include cool science and technology concepts, kill a few bad guys, make new friends and create a utopia. What more can you ask for?
Let’s face it, if you’re on book 10 you have been hooked for a long time and little I could say would change that. However, even if you have read them all, this one is unexpected... brilliant, funny, great characters and a story that has gone from strength to strength. Yes, I think you’ll enjoy this one!
What an excellent conclusion to the reaper series!!! JN Chaney and Scott Moon do an excellent job! The story wraps up very nicely. There was some sadness, some death, but overall an excellent excellent excellent story. Stop what you're doing and read the last Reaper book 10 right now.
Peace has now come. The forces of evil conquered. Two powerful AI'S battle each other for domination. One called Z1 is with the Reaper Cain, the other with their enemies. A magnificent conclusion to this excellent series!! Enjoyed immensely!!!
The "Reaper" books have been an outstanding and thoroughly enjoyable series from start to finish. Heartily recommended. If you're looking for a new series, try it..you'll like it.
As I have come to expect another great storyline with plenty of action and banter... Well done although I did feel the last fight with Reaper and Z2 was a bit tame it got the job done... Looking forward to reading your other storylines 😁😁😎😎
I've really enjoyed this story line taking shape. Would be nice if there was some kind of spinoff. Pretty sure the Reaper was mentioned in one of their other books
Loved this book! Great action, suspense, intrigue and fun reading. If this is th3 last book in the series, I could live with it, BUT, the author has left an opening that he could keep it going.
One of the best 10 book SF series I have read. Let’s not shut the series down with these wonderful characters. I have read SF for over 65 years and these authors compare with the very best.
Great series and story line. The conclusion in my opinion wasn't as impressive as the story. I had hoped something more fulfilling for Halek Cain after all he'd been through.
What a great ride this series has been. Stumbled onto it last year and have been enjoying it ever since. Bummed for this to be the end of the line but I definitely enjoyed the ride.
I struggled to finish this - mainly because I couldn't find a good chunk of time to listen. Tom Taylorson is just amazing with his voices for the various characters. This feels like a nice place to leave things. I know there are four more books (currently) in the series should I want to continue. But for now I like leaving Reaper Cain where he is. Time to take a break from this world so I can come back fresh and enjoy it in the future.
Liked this whole series. Action got clunky at time and sometime things seemed a bit off, sequence wise, but still liked the story, characters and action.
