Alexandra & Edith's Escapades - The Diamond Ring

Rate this book
Set in the late 1920s, Alexandra Thornton and Edith Blackburn have been best friends all their lives.

They both work at Thornton Antiques in Melbourne.

When a man comes into the showroom, wanting to sell his late mother’s diamond ring, alarm bells sound in Alexandra’s head. No one carries around an expensive ring in their pocket, with no ring case to hold and protect it!

Besides, he might be well-dressed, but he didn’t have any manners. If his mother owned such a valuable ring, Alexandra would have expected him to know he shouldn’t walk into an antiques’ showroom and thrust it under the proprietor’s nose. There were processes. Another reason not to trust the man!

Perhaps he is a thief and it isn’t his mother’s ring at all?

Alexandra is determined to find out. The next day, when he returns to the showroom, Alexandra decides to follow him when he leaves. With Edith in tow, they soon discover far more than they anticipated.

If you have read The Dragon Sleeps, you will be familiar with Alexandra and Edith and the mystery that these two girls try and solve.... well, Alexandra mostly really, but Edith has a look in too!!

What This Book Is About
The opening scene is when Alexandra and Edith are discussing a suspicious fellow that had come into Thornton Antiques. This fellow wanted to sell his mothers ring, 💍 but something was shady that Alexandra didn't like the look of. Which drove Alexandra to ask a mountain full of questions. However, Thomas Thornton (Alexandra's father) was much more forgiving with his questioning. Although the ring was bought, Alexandra wasn't satisfied at all ... so many questions and no answers, so to cut a long story short, Edith and Alexandra find an opportunity to follow this fellow, infact, as per usual Edith and Alexandra get caught up in a somewhat snooping frenzy, arriving at a door full of secrets. 🚪🗝 What has Alexandra got herself into this time!!! Will she stay out of trouble? and what about poor Edith? Will she do the job she was asked to do?

What I Thought About This Book
Ellen Read has a play on words in this particular short story, and in typical Ellen Read style, she delivers her punchline extremely well, but not only that, her writing is witty and fits the story beautifully ... in fact, this is her signature style I would know her writing anywhere! Ellen is not only witty but uses alot of descriptive words. My favourite is - "The blood drained from her face as ice tracked through her veins".

Recommendation
I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys Agatha Christie books (as Ellen is a lover of her books, so heads up, there has been the odd book or two mentioned in this story) who enjoys cosy/cozy mysteries (as this is what Ellen is known for) and who enjoys a witty banter in their book, but just be careful with Alexandra, you don't want to get on the wrong side of her!! Oh my giddy Aunt.... No way!!!.

A diamond ring and shifty character lead Lexy and Edie to a mystery.

I really enjoyed this short story. The pacing was excellent and the characters were entertaining and vivid.

Alexandra & Edith’s Escapades - The Diamond Ring is a stand-alone short story that follows The Dragon Sleeps. However, even if you haven’t yet read The Dragon Sleeps - published by Crimson Cloak Publishing – you will still follow The Diamond Ring.

This story features Alexandra and Edith, and although Thomas Thornton and Benedict Archer are in it, they only play a minor part.

The idea for the girls to have some escapades came from a comment made by my editor, who asked me if I’d thought of writing a story about the girls solving a murder. At that stage, I hadn’t. Since then, I’ve had numerous comments from readers who have read The Dragon Sleeps, telling me how much they love Lexy and Edie.

Everything came together when I received the offer to have The Thornton Mysteries series published by Crimson Cloak Publishing. This would mean there’d be a wait until the series of books was published. So, I decided to write Alexandra & Edith’s Escapades, to give readers something to fill the gap.

This story is free on my website as a PDF.

I hope you enjoy reading The Diamond Ring.
