For long-time Durango Fire Department EMT, Ava ‘Blue’ Navarro, her teammates at Station 3 represent a family more loyal than her own. However, when patients start dying on her watch, she draws the attention of local law enforcement. In particular the smooth-talking detective she’s successfully evaded for years, fearing he might stir up her quiet existence.
Detective Tony Ramirez considers himself a likable guy, which is why the perpetual cold shoulder from the athletic blonde first responder is confusing. Now he finds himself in charge of a murder investigation that threatens to shake his world both personally and professionally. A situation that won’t earn him any brownie points.
When medical examiner, Calder Stonewall, is called in to assist, it only seems to throw more suspicion Blue’s way, and Tony has to pull out all the stops to prove her innocence while securing her heart.
USA Today bestselling author Freya Barker loves writing about ordinary people with extraordinary stories. Driven to make her books about 'real' people; she creates characters who are perhaps less than perfect, each struggling to find their own slice of happy, but just as deserving of romance, thrills and chills in their lives.
Recipient of the ReadFREE.ly 2019 Best Book We've Read All Year Award for "Covering Ollie, the 2015 RomCon “Reader’s Choice” Award for Best First Book, “Slim To None”, and Finalist for the 2017 Kindle Book Award with “From Dust”, Freya continues to add to her rapidly growing collection of published novels as she spins story after story with an endless supply of bruised and dented characters, vying for attention!
As a paramedic, Blue’s life revolves around the firehouse with no time for dating. But that’s okay with her. She’s learned some hard life lessons that she won’t soon forget. Until Tony Ramirez is forcing himself into her life under the guise of friend. Before she knows it, they’ve expedited friendship and moved forward to so much more. All that’s left is to share her final secret with him and hope he’ll stay.
Blue is one tough heroine. She really has been through some pretty tragic events in her life. Her job is demanding both physically and mentally, often leaving her emotionally drained. I didn’t expect her to lean on Tony when things got rough, but she surprised me by doing so, making her so much more likable in my eyes.
Tony was fierce when it came to protecting Blue, even from those he should never have had to protect her from. I love they way he cared for her, even when all she needed was just his presence in the room. His total acceptance of all that she was made me love him even more.
This has quite a bit of mystery and suspense interlaced with a wonderful romance, all of it on equal footing so it didn’t have more of one thing than the other. This couple were so perfectly paired, it’s hard to imagine they could ever be with anyone else. Everything between them pretty much just slides into place, even while they’re trying to find a killer.
With lots of action, AMAZING secondary characters, as well as a mature hero and heroine that define the word HOT, this was one incredible romantic suspense!
This series just seems to be on fire. I've loved every one. When I think I can't like the next book as much as I did the last, I'm proven wrong. I'm even more impressed since our playboy Tony Ramirez turned out to be an excellent hero. I guess all he needed was Blue (Ava) in his life.
Blue was an intriguing character. Who knew she had all that in her past? It made for a great pairing. Tony wasn't shy about the opposite sex and Blue was avoiding anyone who could get too close. I gotta say, I really love how Tony wormed his way into her life. It came off natural and made for a great start for this couple. Then there was the dog. Man, animals and kids are my kryptonite in books.
The suspense was exciting and well written. It gave an added level of excitement to the story along with seeing Tony and Blue grow as a couple. The suspense aspect of the story put these two in situations that tested the bond they were growing and what made me love Tony even more. I really can't wait to see what the author has next for this series.
ABSOLVING BLUE (Police and Fire Operation Alpha Series, On Call Book #4) by Freya Barker is another great romantic suspense addition to this series. This book can be read as a standalone, but there are several crossover characters from previous books in this series and others from Susan Stoker’s Operation Alpha world. I have enjoyed reading all the “On Call” books in order.
Durango Fire Department EMT, Ava “Blue” Navarro holds her own with all her teammates at Station 3. She considers them her family, but no one knows anything about her biological family. Blue works hard and volunteers at the humane society, but she does not get close to anyone to date.
Detective Tony Ramirez has had his eye on the tiny, athletic first responder, but he receives nothing but the cold shoulder from that direction. Tony finally gets a way into Blue’s life by offering to share responsibility for her new rescue dog. As the two begin to see each other, Blue opens up to the handsome detective, but it could all be derailed when Tony’s new investigation involves patients dying after emergencies that Blue has ties to.
As Tony works to prove Blue’s innocence, her past returns to threaten her new life. And even as the growing evidence is incriminating Blue, Tony and all of his colleagues work to prove her innocence. Her life will depend on what they discover.
I love this series and this book was another great read from this author! I have been waiting for Tony to meet the woman who was right for him and Blue is perfect even with all of the past and present drama she brings with her. The romance moves at a realistic pace as Blue opens up and begins to share with Tony who is being very supportive. The sex scenes are explicit, but not gratuitous. I love how Ms. Barker gives me mature characters to read about; both Tony and Blue are in their forties. The suspense story kept me on the edge of my seat even knowing who they were looking for it was still a page turner.
I loved this book as I have all the books in this series. Ms. Barker never fails to give me realistic, genuine, mature and likable characters. She is a must buy author for me.
The On Call series has become a favorite of mine, and with each new installment thus far, I fall further in love with Freya’s whole cast of characters—humans and animals!
Needless to say, I’m so happy that Tony Ramirez gets his happily ever after—apparently, no one is immune to where Cupid aims his arrow—not even a smoking hot, swoon-worthy, sexy-as-sin Latino detective! Yes, ladies, the Durango police department’s player extraordinaire is off the market, and he wouldn't have it any other way.
Ava “Blue” Navarro is an EMT for Durango’s fire department and does just fine working and dealing with the guys in the firehouse on a daily basis. She may be pretty and tiny, but she certainly has the respect of her co-workers. Ava is also the focus of Tony’s attention.
There’s a reason Ava’s nickname is Blue, and it has nothing to do with the color of her eyes or her hair, which is blonde anyway. Just like so many of Freya’s characters, Ava has one helluva past, one that refuses to stay just where she left it.
This is where the suspense starts, the alpha heroes spin out of the telephone booths, chicken taco lessons are taught, and every bit of goodness, tenacity, strength, and loyalty explodes from the pages when someone in Durango is threatened or in harm’s way or needs some saving in more ways than one.
Tony and Ava are fantastic together. Their chemistry and understanding of each other’s job really goes a long way in making their relationship work. And let’s face it, Tony is just plain HOT!
Freya Barker conjures up some of the most genuine and likeable characters I’ve ever read, whether they’re the MCs or part of her brilliant supporting cast. She brings out their strengths, their weaknesses, and sometimes puts them through the wringer, but the best part is that in some capacity or another, they all find their way into every storyline. This is what world building is all about.
When I open up any one of Freya’s books, it feels like I’ve come home to visit my old friends, and then get to meet a new one—every single time, and Absolving Blue is no exception. Tony and Ava’s story is a perfect edition to this incredible series, and I can’t recommend it enough. Five stars for another spectacular read from the fabulous Freya Barker.
I’ve been wanting to read Tony’s story for a while and it was amazing! Loved it. Blue Navarro and Tony Ramirez has known each other for a long time but always avoided each other. Suddenly they are co-parenting a sweet dog named Arthur. But when Blue becomes a suspect of a few crimes when patients start dying after her care and Tony will have to prove her innocence. Blue was sweet, strong and independent. Love her. I was intrigued to read her story and so happy with it. She’s perfect for Tony. Tony..hot latin alpha. Will do everything to show the innocence of his woman. Like always Freya Barker brings you a story with real people, awesome suspense that will have you at the edge of your seat.
This story was great!!! I enjoyed it very much! I had a hard time putting it down when I was forced to live in the real. Ha! Blue is a sweet EMT and Tony is a hottie detective. Enough said, right??? Now add in a series of unexplained deaths, someone looking for revenge and a sweet puppy named Author. I have you hooked now, don’t I??? Those are the makings of a story that just sucks you in from start to finish. Trust me on this one.
Although this story is part of a series, each story is about a different couple and can be read all on there own. However, you should read this whole series since it is just that good. And while you’re at it, just add all of her stories to your TBR. :)
I’ve been waiting for Tony’s story and I’m so happy to say that it was everything I imagined for this beloved character! Blue was the perfect match for Tony and it was so easy to connect with their relationship, as well as each of them separately. As always, I enjoy returning to this town and catching up with previous couples as well as being introduced to newer characters. Of course I look forward to Sumo’s story but I’m really excited to see what happens next with Yuma and Lissie....I have a feeling it’s going to be one heck of a ride!
Once again Freya Barker delivers a well crafted and written thought out story and plot. As a writer we can always expect her to produce a book well worth purchasing with food for thought. In particular it is awesome to have stories crafted well around characters that have lived a life and faced obstacles and are mature (in age). I was fortunate to have access to an ARC and also happily directly purchased my own copy.
This story has everything from action, danger, deaths, setups and newfound love. When Blue's past comes to haunt her, at least she has Tony (a detective) who likes her and is there to help. Sumo her paramedic buddy is very protective of her. Yes there's heat, but i love a great story line and that exceeds into each chapter. HEA
I liked how at the start of this one Tony was intimidated by Blue, it was probably due to his attraction to her and how she was one of the few women that wasn't instantly bowled over by his charm. I honestly thought it might take more time for the two of them to end up together, glad it didn't as Blue had a ton of trouble stalking her and she needed the support and help that Tony provided. Tony became the person that Blue could depend on when her world started to implode, his house and all the renovations she did or directed a great distraction and a way to keep calm. Tony's family so loving and welcoming, unlike her own. Everything that she seemed to need in her life she found with Tony, all the while he didn't stifle her or try to stop her from doing her own dangerous job.
I loved how this one ended, loved the HEA these two found, because they lived through hell for a while and deserved to life happy.
The On Call Series is a remarkable, well-written, intense and suspenseful one....and I can't get enough of it, or of Ms. Barker's signature writing! I have loved every single one of them, all of which can be read as standalones. Each story builds off the previous, creating layers upon layers of wonderful characters who FEEL so REAL....I want to live forever in Freya's Durango!
With Absolving Blue she has written my FAVE couple in this series to date! And that's saying something because I have LOVED every single one of them! There's just something about Durango's resident "manwhore" Tony (who, by the way, is really anything BUT) and the closed-off, don't-come-too-close Ava "Blue" (she has a past she does NOT want discovered) that hit me so hard in the FEELS! The chemistry between these two is OFF-THE CHARTS and the push-pull between them is EPIC!!! Added to all that is the heart-stopping suspense and intrigue surrounding the sudden deaths that appear to point directly to Ava and Tony's totally ALPHA-TO-THE-MAX personality EXPLODES!!!! I couldn't get enough!
All in all, Absolving Blue is another INCREDIBLY well-written MUST READ from an author who continually hits my Top Reads list with every book she writes! Do yourself a favour and start with ANY of the books in the On Call series (or ANY of Freya Barker's other books)....you will NOT be disappointed!
Another great story! I feel like I am always saying “can’t wait for so and so’s story”,but it was true with Tony. Tony has been mentioned frequently and always on the hunt for his lady. Tony finally has his turn. Blue has much to overcome and Tony is there every step of the way!
The book is a good romantic suspense read. The story has a good story line. The characters are good, well rounded, and they have good chemistry. The story is an enjoyable, fast pace, intense action, romance read.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.

Well, I read that sucker in an evening and regret nothing. What a fabulous story - fast-paced, intense action, sometimes brutal with its details but highly realistic. Great characters that were filled with tons of growth.
the pacing of the relationship was spot on, sex and romance were fabulous - I really enjoyed this book from start to finish, no complaints at all! Oh, and cute dog, too. And Tony's dad is the best, adore him! And two thumbs up on the epilogue.
I was really looking forward to Tony Ramirez and Ava “Blue” Navarro’s story and Freya totally did not disappoint. I loved spending time with these characters. This story had everything you’ve come to expect from a Freya Barker book and so much more. Blue is such an intriguing character and when she and Tony are together the sparks just fly. She has such a big heart, she cares about her family at work and she cares for the patients she comes in contact with being an EMT. When they mysteriously start dying she takes it to heart. Tony steps up to investigate. I love how he has her back and does whatever it takes to not only protect her but to get to the bottom of what’s going on. I did not want to put this book down. I love these characters and this story was a home run!
Just when I think Freya Barker’s books are perfect, she kicks the next one up a notch. Her suspense plots and mature characters make her books beyond compare. Her banter and character development are in their own category and the sexual chemistry is off the charts I have loved everything I have read by this author and each books secures another corner of my reader heart. Absolving Blue may be my very favorite book to date. Blue and Tony’s story is both beautiful and heartbreaking. This book is part of Ms. Barker’s On Call Series in Susan Stoker’s Police and Fire: Operation Alpha world. Each romantic suspense book in this series is better than the last. In past books Tony Ramirez has come off as the playboy detective just looking for his next one-night stand. Every time he’s thought he might have a chance for something more, one of his friends ends up with the girl. But apparently he’s had his eye on the quiet, reserved paramedic, Blue Navarro, for a while. However, she’s been doing her best to avoid him when their paths overlap. Blue is focused on her job and her family of choice at the firehouse. Her “real” family more than let her down in the past; a past that threatens her present. When patients, who are stable after Blue and her partner take them to the hospital, start dying it throws suspicion on the paramedic. In a rare moment of vulnerability, Tony sees beneath the tough exterior to the beautiful, fractured heart of the woman inside. After a particularly bad day, Blue adopts a dog, despite her shifts at the fire station, and when Tony steps in to help with the dog, and all bets are off. The story that follows in full of suspense, intrigue, suspicion, friendship, love, and the true meaning of family. I devoured this book and anxiously await the next book from Ms. Barker.
No one combines heart stopping romance with edge of your seat suspense quite the way Freya Barker does. Absolving Blue perfectly show cases her ability to completely captivate someone with romance so real you find yourself falling in love and mystery with twists and turns that will shock you. I started reading this in the evening thinking I’d relax for a bit before bed and the next thing I knew it was the middle of the night and I devoured every single page. There was just no stopping when it came to Blue and Tony. They were such fantastic characters on their own. Blue with an unbelievable strength but made more human and so relatable with her vulnerable side. And Tony with his unwavering support, belief and love. These two together are a couple that make it so easy to love them. With obstacles being thrown at them left and right they continue to fall deeper and deeper pulling you right along with them. Absolving Blue is yet another magnificent must read from Freya Barker!

Ava ‘Blue’ Navarro is happy with her life at the firehouse. Tony Ramirez isn't used to women not falling for his charm and his hot Latin accent. He wants Blue but she's seemingly very disinterested in the hot detective. But when it becomes apparent someone is after Blue, who better to step into her life than Tony?
This series just keeps bringing the suspense and the wonderfully likable characters with chemistry in spades. Tony & Blue are a fabulous couple. She has such a heartbreaking past and it's made her determined to keep her heart intact. Thank God for gentle but alpha Tony who was determined to protect his woman, not because he thought she was weak, but because he loved her. Dang...I can't wait for the next couple in this suspenseful, sexy series.
I could not wait for Tony and Blue's story Freya has the wonderful gift of telling stories about ordinary people that make you feel as though you know them , you cannot put the book down she is great for a diet as you have no time to eat , Blue Navarro is sweet paramedic with the Durango Fire department and earned her name as she always appears sad although she has great camaraderie with her work mates and loves the banter that they all fire off at each other they are the only family she needs . Tony Ramirez is a detective with the Durango PD and is regarded as a player but just lately he wants more after seeing his friends find happiness he has been attracted to Blue for a time now but thinks she doesn't like him . But at a chance encounter he starts to think otherwise and makes it his mission to get to know her and pushes his way into her life by deciding to co parent her rescue dog Arthur after to many deaths of patients that Blue attended the finger starts to point to her, and Tony steps up like the true hero he is to prove her innocence, with a nightmare from her past making matters worse the two of them have their work cut out , I loved Tony's family maybe POPs could find a little romance . I love the way in which Freya includes characters from other books and Jed Mason from Cedar Tree was a great surprise I hope he gets his story
Blue’s job as an EMT is more than a career it is a calling. She is a woman with a big heart and a painful past who is close to the people she works with but has no interest in love or a relationship. She may be attracted to Tony, but she is determined that colleagues is all they will ever be.
Tony is a Detective who had made it clear to Blue that he would like a relationship with her, but she has rebuffed all his attempts. When he is tasked with investigating the suspicious deaths of some of her patients Tony knows that she is innocent but proving it may be the biggest challenge of all.
I really enjoyed watching the relationship between Blue and Tony unfold. The support that he gave her when she needed it the most showed the strength of his feelings for her and allowed her to open up about her past.
This is a fantastically written heartfelt and emotionally gripping story! The author has a talented way of weaving the perfect balance of angst and steam that captivated me to the end. It’s a suspenseful story, in a “who done it” way that includes all the feels! My heart hurt for Blue. Gah! What she’s been through!! Having suffered major trauma in her past, Blue is left mentally and emotionally scarred. She’s learned early on that the only person she can trust is herself. Now she’s built a new life, one she is good at and enjoys. But once again, her past finds her. This time it isn’t letting go. Tony “the charmer” is a detective who has had Blue on his radar for a while. Even though Blue shuts him down every time, he isn’t giving up. “For a moment you forget to shield your emotions when I looked into your eyes.” “I always thought you were aloof-distant, even cold-but in that moment I knew I’d been very wrong.” Tony’s going to do everything he can to tear down Blue’s protective walls, brick by brick. I really, really loved these two!. It was fun to see Blue push Tony’s charming ways off kilter and how Tony was able to see passed Blue’s armor. They made each other vulnerable while simultaneously making each other strengthen, each in their own way. Around her people are dying. Blue soon finds that she’s the sole factor tied to the deaths, making her the number one suspect. She’s spent so long surviving by not trusting others. But now, to survive she’ll have to put her trust in others. For the first time she’ll have to go against her instincts. Can she do it? This book is another example of Freya Barker’s ability to write incredible stories with suspense, intrigue, and steam implemented with the perfect dose of humorous reality. A book I highly recommend.
What can I say about Freya Barker?? She is without doubt one of my favourite authors though she is, IMHO, sadly under-acknowledged when it comes to how good she is at her craft!!
Her stories are touching, well written and filled with humour. Her characters are relatable, likeable and believable who, often times, have dealt with or are going through real life issues. Ms B also throws in spade loads of action, suspense, twists and turns and one helluva lot of heat and passion!
I loved Ava/Blue. She’s always come across as a real tough, no nonsense cookie when we’ve met her in previous stories but learning about her past and that she wasn’t just as tough as she’d have other believe gave her a real sense of vulnerability that I could understand. Saying that, she’s still no shrinking violet and I was pretty sure at points that she was gonna stand fast in her determination to close out Tony Ramirez, even when it wouldn’t have been in her own best interest!! Thankfully that wasn’t the case for too long!
So, to Mr Ramirez. If I’m being honest he was one of these characters who previously I couldn’t quite decide if I really liked or not, he seemed at points to hit on any pretty female with a pulse and I couldn’t quite make up my mind if he was a real manwhore or just a bit of a ladies man! Well, I should never doubt Freya ‘cos, as ever, she made him likeable and turns out he was a really great guy who was there for Ava when she really needed him.
Their relationship, when it began, didn’t take too long to develop into something more and I was cool with that, both are a bit older and when you know what you’ve got is right, what’s the point in wasting time waiting?
The action, suspense and surprises all added to my enjoyment of the story, as did catching up with some of our old favourites from earlier books and previous series. I adored Tony’s dad, he was a great character.
Absolving Blue is another surefire hit in the On Call series and I can’t wait to find out what’s coming next from Ms Barker.
So, I do suggest that you read the previous books before this, that way you are already up to speed on things and not lost about all the characters that pop up. Blue lives a quiet life, she goes to work, does her shift, hangs out with her co-workers, and goes home. She knows Det. Tony Ramirez, and so far has done a good job of shutting him down, she doesn't need the attention of a ladies man.
Tony has no clue why Blue wants nothing to do with him, but he is determined to get her to just give him a chance. Just when he finally has gotten that chance, it comes to light that all of Blue's patients have been dying and of course Blue is the number one suspect. Knowing that Blue is innocent, Tony is working hard to find just who is responsible. But will he figure it out before whoever is framing Blue succeeds?
Tony and Blue's story was absolutely amazing! With the drama, danger, action, mystery and the spicy naughty bits; this story just kept you pulled in and there was never a dull moment. I love how we get to see everyone from previous stories. I give this very entertaining read 5 stars.
*happy dance*!!! Really looking forward to Blue and Tony’s story and it didn’t disappoint! Blue is such an intriguing and interesting character that I loved her almost instantly. She has a past that just breaks my heart. Tony is the playboy of the detective force, but when he meets Blue all bets are off. When patients Blue and her partner transport to the hospital suddenly start dying suspicion is thrown on Blue. That’s really when you see a vulnerable side to Blue and Tony steps in to have her back. Will Blue be cleared of any wrong doing? I can’t wait for the next installment of the series!!
I have been absolutely loving the On Call series so far, and Absolving Blue is another great story!
We have gotten to know Tony over the past few books as a bit of a player but a genuinely good guy who has taken his shots but missed when it comes to a few of the author's other heroines. Now we know why: his future was reserved for the quiet but fierce EMT Ava "Blue" Navarro. Their backgrounds could not be more different with Tony coming from a loving family while Blue's family was enough to send her running as soon as she reached the age of 18. Her past taught her to keep people at a distance while keeping her feelings on lockdown, but she has come to realize that her crew at the fire station has become her new family of choice.
Tony Ramirez has always scared the crap out of her because he is exactly the type of hottie charmer she could see herself falling for; unfortunately past experience has taught her those kinds of men are the ones she should run, not walk, away from. She is absolutely devastated when patients she has cared for begin dying unexpectedly, and she is horrified when she is placed under the microscope of suspicion when law enforcement determines she is the common thread connecting all the deaths. Tony surprises her with his unwavering belief in her innocence and she finally lets her guard down enough to let him past some of her defenses. Her past is about to come back to bite her in a big way though, and her lingering secrets may just spell the end for both her job and her budding relationship with Tony.
Once again Ms. Barker blends romance and suspense with a healthy dose of heat and humor for one wonderful read that I couldn't put down once I dove in. Oh and did I mention an absolutely adorable rescue mutt named Arthur that steals Blue's heart along with Tony's- and mine! Multiple threads of plots are skillfully woven to connect with a few "whoa" moments that I wasn't expecting, and I am already looking forward to whatever comes next for this group of characters that I have come to love!
A Casanova detective and a standoffish EMT suddenly have a reason to be in each other lives. Tony has had his eyes on Blue for awhile but she has given of vibes of not being interested. I absolutely LOVED the reason that put them closer and knew that grateful rescue would give back. I thoroughly enjoy how this author draws you into the story by giving you hints (that you may not realize) and parts of the story that are part of the bigger picture without giving away the bigger picture too soon. The epilogue had me giggling and thank goodness for plastic containers!
Another well written story from a great storyteller.
The story was good, not safe by some people standards, they 'met' two years , and he's been with others, not sure of her. Like I said the story line was good and as it seems a lot of people loved it. I think I would have too but in my crazy mind I was ready to love all the awesomeness that was the H and he fell flat for me. He was a manwhore where all the girls new the score and he didn't lie to them. He brought her to a restaurant where one of his ons works, she comes on to him in front of the h. He apologizes but the H laughs saying she knows his reputation (this is something that I personally don't care for, I like my guys with less mileage). He was with that particular ons because he was feeling bad that the girl he was pining over got together with someone else (another book from this author) He never went for it with the h because she was offstandish but one day he sees a look in her eye and now he can go for it , burst into the bar she's at with co-workers and yell at her about a video she is in doing her job. He doesn't tell her they are eating with his family until they show up because he is afraid if he told her beforehand she wouldn't go, so he took her choice away from her. When she tells him something so important about her, he storms out, not staying to talk about. He wasn't storming away because of her but she didn't know that. He got mad at her earlier in the book for leaving when she was mad at him so hello kettle... One or two of these things wouldn't have been bad but the combination was too much for my fairytale book boyfriend. Again, it's a good story, I liked the ending.
