I have been really struggling for some reason with planning the cities to go to and the overall itinerary for my starter trip to Japan, and this and other guide books I have been reading have changed that for the better. I had originally planned to go this spring, but when another big trip came up as an option, traveling with friends to a place that I would not plan myself, it seemed both too good to pass up and a life saver because I would have to delay--but now I feel ready to plan this for the fall, just one season behind schedule. The "starter trip" now seems like a good place to begin (ok, that is maybe very obvious, and I am laughing at myself as I type this, but it did come as a revelation)--I had wondered about a food oriented trip instead, but it seems like there is a lot of good food to be had and you do not need to go to the home of ramen to have good ramen, as an example. Then I wondered about seeking out fabric specifically, but that also seems unnecessary, so only ceramics remain, and that just adds zero to one place to the standard approach. If you are someone who likes to think about itineraries, this is a good book to start with--it does a lot of characterizing places, which I find helpful because some of the "good" things may not be appealing to you, and I crossed off some options and added one, and feel like I am ready to start planning in earnest.
