Cowgirl Sage Highwater had some tough times growing up: she was the only girl in a family of five, and the youngest to boot. She lost her amazing father and her closest sibling on the same day. And two years later, the boy she loved down to her soul left her behind without a word.
Growing up, Scott Parrish had been the talk of Last Stand, Texas, and never in a good way. At odds with his family, he’d constantly courted trouble. No one seemed to care or understand him, except Sage. At seventeen he’d been given a chance to make something of his life. He’d seized it, but at the expense of leaving the girl he loved. Ten years later he’s back, but not to stay.
Is a few days enough for even a determined cowgirl to convince the bad boy-turned-hero to finally give their love a chance in the hometown he’s hated for years?
Author biographies are supposed to give you all those statistics, books written, awards won, etc. and I will, I promise...but first let me tell you about this ornery little tomboy (back then, the boys had all the fun...) who was always the one to make up the stories the neighborhood kids would "play". For those who came of age in the computer game era, this is something that was done usually in the backyard, by any number of summer-bored children, with props where appropriate. (Did you know a 55 gallon drum tied to a picnic bench makes a very cool horse?) It wasn't until much later that this tomboy realized two things: A) not everyone made up stories in their heads all the time, and B) in real life, the boys that had already had all the fun now seemed to always be winning.
But I digress. I was born on a farm down in Iowa....well, not quite, but close; Boone, Iowa is in the middle of farm country, but I arrived at a hospital. In a snow storm. Make that a blizzard. My sister tells me she knew my destiny when I was very young, because when I first saw the Disney classic Old Yeller, I was apparently so upset that I promptly went home and rewrote the story. In my version, the dog lived, of course. Should have been a clue.
Possibly in response to that blizzard I was born in, I've been a West Coaster since before I was a year old, and intend to stay that way. I have a history of staying. I started my first full time job right out of school (well, there was a very brief sojourn at a place where they made, among other things, burial vaults, but I prefer not to recall that one...) and stayed for twenty-one years. I've been married to the same wonderful guy for going on two decades now. We lived in our last house for seventeen years. (I won't even mention how many dumpsters we filled moving after that long....)
Readers seem as fascinated by my first career as they are with my writing. My time in law enforcement was many things, exciting, nerve wracking, and irritating, but most importantly never, ever boring. It was fascinating enough that I didn't think about writing seriously for several years. I kept a journal, and wrote long letters, collected quotes, mentally rewrote movies, and still made up those stories in my head, but never dreamed of actually writing for publication. I was having too much fun helping to catch bad guys, and being continually amazed at the situations people get themselves into. And eventually I walked away with a wealth of background and story ideas, and knowing some truly great people who work very hard to keep all of us safe. I'm proud to have been one of them, and I'm very aware that I have had the great good fortune of having had two jobs in my life that I love. Many people don't get even one.
But now that I'm in the delicious position of being able to make a living telling those stories in my head, I promise my readers two things: A) I'm staying--I'll keep writing as long as you keep reading, and B) in my stories, the girl--tomboy or not--always wins!

Received an Advance Reader Copy in exchange for a fair review 4.5 stars. A passionate love story between the most unexpected hero and a vibrant, strong heroine. A high-school crush and infatuation turn into adult love in “Lone Star Reunion”, by Justine Davis (Tule Publishing), a wonderful story featuring an incredible wounded hero, a paradoxical military man in whom we see both the tough Marine sniper and a lonely, scared boy. I’m amazed with the fact that Justine Davis still manages to surprise us, readers, and reinvent the tortured, troubled hero, with the most unexpected military male character. Scott’s sense of inferiority and lack of worth, a result of a troubled childhood affected by abandonment and cruelty, pairs with the strength and confidence of the hardened marine. This is a sweet yet sometimes sad story about how young love evolves into adulthood, between two people who are refreshingly sure of their feelings for each other. Last Stand’s community and Sage’s family embrace of Scott is heartwarming. I loved to meet again Sage’s family – Kane’s story is a must! – and watch her best friend’s blossoming romance with Asher (Jessie and Asher are the romantic couple in Eve Gaddy’s “Heart of the Texas Warrior”).
Lone Star Reunion by Justine Davis The spark is still there… and brighter than ever Cowgirl Sage Highwater had some tough times growing up: she was the only girl in a family of five, and the youngest to boot. She lost her amazing father and her closest sibling on the same day. And two years later, the boy she loved down to her soul left her behind without a word. Growing up, Scott Parrish had been the talk of Last Stand, Texas, and never in a good way. At odds with his family, he’d constantly courted trouble. Ten years later he’s back, but not to stay. Is a few days enough for even a determined cowgirl to convince the bad boy-turned-hero to finally give their love a chance in the hometown he’s hated for years? This is Sage Highwater and Scott Parrish's story. Sage Highwater heard her brothers talking from where she stood in the back entry, pulling off her boots. While the Highwater ranch house was a place with floors intended to tolerate all the effects of ranch work, her boots were particularly muddy today; giving a horse a bath tended to have that result. She had no idea what or who they were talking about, but Sean’s comment about being different didn’t give her the qualms it once had. Not anymore. Not since Elena had turned his life around simply by falling in love with him. She was smiling to herself about that, and about how well Poke, their prime reining prospect, had done in their training session today. She was going to have to seriously consider whether to ease off on the intensive training. She didn’t want the sweet, agile dun to go sour before the big competition this summer in Oklahoma City. The boy she had loved but who had, without a word, left her behind to do it. The moment Scott Parrish got out of the rental car he knew he’d made a mistake. And why are you surprised? Just because you managed to stop making them most of the time elsewhere? Lone Star Reunion by Justine Davis is a 4 star book. I have connected with and completely enjoyed every single story in the Texas Justice series. The Highwater family is an amazing group of brothers and a sister with one brother missing for years. The previous stories as to how Sage’s brothers have found their true, everlasting love will be reread often in my reading future, I’m certain. Yet Lone Star Reunion takes us up to yet another level of emotions, reactions, and a deep abiding love that nothing, not even themselves can dim – it’s just going to take some trust and some risks before that love finds a forever home.
My heart broke for Scott, simply broke. No child, no person should ever have to live through the childhood that he experienced. And to say that I loathe his family would be an understatement. Still, to say too much right now would lead to spoilers that I will not do as you really need to experience this emotional story firsthand. I will say that I loved the man Scott became, that when the chance came to turn his life around he grabbed it with both hands even though it hurt unbelievably. Now he’s home in Last Stand, a place that he’s had a love/hate relationship with for years, for it was here that he fell in love with Sage, and it was here that he broke her heart by leaving without warning. One quick trip home is all he will allow himself this time, a quick good-bye, a fast thank you and then he’s gone again… or that was the plan, right up until Sage and a second chance to get their love right this time if he could make himself stay – for her.
I absolutely adored Sage and Scott individually and definitely together. Kane’s is probably the only story that might come close in how I feel about Lone Stare Reunion, mainly because we’ve been waiting for this lost brother to be found for so long now. I would highly recommend this story and this series to any reader who loves a good, solid romance that will bring out all the emotions possible, an intriguing plot, interesting secondary characters, catching up with the couples from the previous books, and a couple who have gone through the fire and will finally discover that love can overcome anything even if you have to wait for the right time.
*I received an e-ARC of this novel from the publisher, Tule Publishing. That does not change what I think of this story. It is my choice to leave a review giving my personal opinion about this book.*
Finally we have Sage's story. The only girl in the Highwater clan, she has had to be tough to stand up to her brothers. And not only is she the only girl but she is also the youngest child. She is the one who has has to deal with older brothers. She has also dealt with tragedy, including losing her brother and father and than her boyfriend all before the age of 18. All of this has only made her stronger.
Scott Parrish grew up always being the talk of Last Stand. And this wasn't in a good way. His life was tough but he always knew he could count on Sage. But something happened when he was 17 and that led to him disappearing from Last Stand without a word to anyone, including Sage. Scott was given the chance to change his life in a positive way and he took it. Ten years later, Scott is back in Last Stand after having served in the Army. He is out and back in the town that he has hated pretty much all of his life. The only thing in the town that he cares about even still is Sage.
Sage and Scott have a lot of catching up to and Sage is hoping to convince Scott that he really needs to give their relationship a chance again. And to give the town a chance.
Can Sage win over Scott's heart again? Can Scott open not only his heart but his mind again? Given that this is a romance by the talented Justine Davis who I have been reading since some of her very early novels, I can safely tell you the answer is maybe. But not without several twists and turns.
I have been reading Ms. Davis' novels since her early days and have always loved her work. She writes wonderful stories with relatable characters who are believable. The stories are complex yet easy to follow even with the plot twists. I am always looking for her new novels.
I did receive a copy of this novel in advance from the publisher in exchange for a fair and unbiased review. But I think I have given away that Ms. Davis is among my favorite authors so a fair review is a given.
Sage and Scott’s second chance love story in Lone Star Reunion by Justine Davis, book four in her Texas Justice series, reminds us that everyone is deserving of being loved. Sage Hightower is an amazing woman. This cowgirl had a tough upbringing, especially being the only girl and the youngest. Losing her father, the sheriff, and her closest brother on the same day affected her. Losing the boy she loved a couple of years later with no word devastated her. Scott Parrish constantly courted trouble as he never fit in or was accepted by his family. He believed no one cared or tried to understand him, except for Sage. When, at seventeen, he was given a chance to turn his life around, he grabbed it; unfortunately at the cost of behind the girl he loved. When Scott returns, ten years later, for his brother’s funeral, he had planned to thank the judge who believed in him; not to stay. Sage finally has the chance to convince Scott, the boy-turned-hero, to give their love a chance; especially in the hometown he's hated for years.
Ms. Davis wrote a wonderful and emotional story that is definitely not to be missed. She provided a tale rich with sexual chemistry and charming characters giving Sage and Scott a chance to live a life full of love. I highly recommend Lone Star Reunion to other readers and look forward to the next book in this series.

The Texas Justice Series by Justine Davis has been one of my all time favorites by this author as well as in the many Tule Publishing stories that take place in Last Stand, Texas. Lone Star Reunion has Sage Highwater as the main female character. She in the lone sister of four older brothers. Her family has endured and survived tragedy recent and in the past. Her strong resilient spirit is a testimony to the pioneer women who helped settle Texas. Scott Parrish’s past is tragic to say the least though without the family support that Sage had growing up. He does pull himself up by his Marine bootstraps to become a man of integrity. He is back in Last Stand for a short time because of a family tragedy. Facing Sage again, there are many issues that must be resolved by these two former friends and loves. I found that these characters are genuine with a commonsense approach to problems and life now. Despite the ten years these two have been apart, they are made for each other. The mystery surrounding Sage’s missing brother is also part of their story just as it has been in the last three books. I loved Sage’s story now finding it hard to wait for Kane’s. An ARC of the book was given to me by Tule Publishing which I voluntarily chose to read and reviewed. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
This is a beautiful story we have two people damaged in their own ways who had a strong connection when they where younger Now they reconnect and the connection is still there but is it enough for them to build somthing with
Sage Highwater didn't have the best life after all she was not only the youngest Highwater but also the only girl but the one person she had a connection with was Scott Parrish he didn't have that great a life either and was constantly in trouble the only person that seemed to understand him was Sage When he was seventeen he got himself into trouble but a judge saw the good in him and gave him a chance but it meant he had to leave breaking Sage's heart in the process. Now ten years later Scott has returned a battle scarred Marine sniper to bury his brother, is there still a connection between Sage and him and can they have a future together when he intended to leave yet again.
It’s been fun going back to Last Stand, Texas, this time to watch the unfolding love story between Sage Highwater and the town’s former bad boy, Scott Parrish, back in town for his brother’s funeral ten years after he left. With Scott now a highly decorated Marine, it’s clear that he’s more than paid his debt to society but it’s equally clear that he still feels intimidated by those townspeople who put him down in his teens. Sage, on the other hand, is every inch a Highwater, full of confidence and ready to leap to Scott’s defence at the first hint of trouble. I loved her inner strength and the strong support of her family but I also loved watching Scott slowly discover his worth and take a chance on proving his love to Sage.
I received an ARC in exchange for my honest review.
Having read the earlier books in this series I loved reading more about Sage and her brothers, they are a great loving family. This is a second chance love story. When they were in high school she thought he had just left her and left town without a word, no good bye, no wait for me, how was she to know he had left her a letter hidden in what she had said was a perfect hiding spot at their old place, she had never went back there without him, and now he had returned a hero, was the spark between them ever going to be enough to give them a second chance at love?
This was such a wonderful second chance romance but at the same time it was a very emotion read for me. To see how Scott was treated by his family when he was younger was so heart breaking. Then when he found someone that could help him he was given a hard choice. Even though Sage believed he abandoned her it was the right choice for him. Now 10 years later he is back for his brother’s funeral. Will Sage forgive him? Will people see that he made something of himself? Pick up this book and find out. Honestly you will not be disappointed. I voluntarily reviewed this book in exchange for an honest review.
I enjoyed reading the about the Highwater family.Lone Star Reunion is Sage and Scott's story. Sage had 4 overprotective brothers and a father who was in law, who kept her away from boys that find themselves in trouble, that boy would be Scott Parrish and his brother.Scott was given a second chance to make something of himself or go to prison so he joined the service and hasn't been back to Texas in 10 years except for his brother's funeral.I highly recommend this book series, please go check it out for yourself, you won't regret it.
I voluntarily read a advanced reader's copy of this book for honest opinion. Thank you.
Lone Star Reunion another great addition to the Texas Justice series out by Justine Davis. The story of possible second chances. I enjoyed reading more about Sage Highwater and her family. The character development and dialogue were perfect for storyline. I hope there will be more books in this series.
What a heartfelt book. Decorated, returning war hero, Scott, and the sassy, hometown horse wrangler, Sage, make such a great couple. Scott comes back to Last Stand for his brother's funeral but his main objective is to pay his respects to the person who helped him start a new life. Scott soon learns how many people saw his worth and realizes his biggest supporter is his childhood sweetheart, Sage. This is a heartfelt reunion between two wonderful characters.
I really enjoyed reading Scott and Sage’s story from when they met as young teens and then when he came home 10 years after he left. Each book in the series they have gotten closer to finding Kane and bringing him back home to his family. Can’t read the final book in the series.
Scott's background story is heartbreaking. An excellent second chance at love story. Sage is a force of nature. I wish we'd heard more about Scott's military career, especially if it had been excerpts of Lily's profile on him. It was mentioned, but not in satisfactory detail.
What an incredible home coming for Scott who had been treated so badly by his parents. Sage had shown him what a normal family life is really like. It was like nothing he had ever experienced before. It just made Scott reside that what he felt for Sage and her family was what he inspired to be and do.
I was excited to read this story and it did not disappoint. A lovely second chance love story, that deals with making peace with your past. Overall, a very good addition to the Texas Justice series. *I received and ARC of this book and this is my voluntary and honest review.
A second chance has the opportunity to bloom for long lost love. It’s the past that tempers the chance for a future and if it can be forgotten, love will happen again. I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Scott is back in town, the first time for years. Sage was gutted when he left town without saying goodbye, so will she give him a second chance now he is back?
I received an ARC in exchange for a voluntary and honest review.
I always enjoy Justine Davis books. This was a great read. As usual it is hard to wait for the next book in this series or others. I am looking forward to Kane's story. In the meantime, I will probably re-read some of her other books.
I received this arc in exchange for an honest review. This is one of my very favorite series. I was so excited to read book 4 in the Texas Justice series. The book takes place in Last Stand Texas and the series is about the Highwater siblings. Each book focuses on a different sibling. This book is Sage’s story, the only girl in the family. We see her 3 brothers and their significant others throughout the book too.
We learn that Sage had befriended Scott Parrish and they had fallen in love before he was forced to leave 10 years earlier. Scott had a horrible family life. His older brother became ill and his parents saw him as the savior until his body parts weren’t a match for Pete Jr. His parents then treated him like dirt, ignoring him and ridiculing him, acting like he’s the most disgusting thing. They even tried to have him adopted. They then had another child that was a match for Pete Jr. and the 4 of them totally shut out Scott. As a result he acted out. First it was to get attention and then because he didn’t care anymore. When he was older he found Sage who became his guardian angel and kept him sane.
After many times of getting in trouble, he was given the choice to enlist in the service as the only way to escape and save himself. He stayed in for 10 years, having no contact with anyone in Last Stand until his brother Pete Jr. killed himself in a drunken car accident. He returned for the funeral and to show the few who supported him that he had done well. He was a Bronze Heart, an esteemed sniper for the Marines and a hero many times over. Sage thought he had left without saying goodbye so she was hurt and angry until he shared that he had written her a letter and hid it. Unfortunately it was destroyed over the 10 years. Her brothers were welcoming to him after they saw how he turned himself around.
New clues turned up for the missing brother Kane that led to Seattle. Scott and Sage left town to find Kane after declaring their love. They found that he had been a visitor to a museum by the Space Needle several times less than a year earlier. This was very exciting to have progress in the search.
This story was wonderful and the information about Scott was so heartbreaking. The love story of Scott and Sage was so down to earth, yet romantic too. I loved it.
There is only one book remaining in the series. I’m hoping we will finally meet Kane and learn what happened 12 years ago and also in the subsequent years to him. This is definitely 5+ stars!
Lone Star Reunion is book four in the Texas Justice series from author Justine Davis. I've had the pleasure of reading books #3 & #4. Since book #5 is one I am highly anticipating, I want to read the books I missed beforehand as soon as possible. I love nothing better than a family series that I can go back on and binge read. I'm sure this will be one of them. Last Stand Texas stars in quite a few series from Tule Publishing; one of my top five favorite publishers. In addition, this author, Justine Davis, is not a new author to me. I have read and enjoyed several of her works. If you love small-town feel romance with a bit of angst and some suspense thrown in and a satisfying happily-ever-after, I recommend this book as well as this series.
Sage is the youngest in a family of five and the fourth Highwater to find true love. Her story is emotional. Scott, Sage's hero has his own emotional demons. I won't get into details about his past, however I will tell you that I have never read a scenario such as his. At first, Scott’s situation didn't feel believable and definitely not relatable. I couldn't understand how any parents could behave so horribly toward their own children. But as I read on, I became engaged in Sage and Scott's story, even wondering if there would be a happy ending for them. There was, and as a result I was genuinely pleased with how things turned out in the end. Very pleased, in fact.
So, if you've read this series or only one or two books such as I have, then you know the remaining sibling has gone missing. Kane left Last Stand and hasn't returned for over a decade. The rest of the Highwater siblings haven't given up looking for him. And in each book, they become closer to finding their missing brother. I personally cannot wait for Kane's story. I suspect that book will be the most heartbreaking. But that's ok, because with that heartbreak, Justine Davis will no doubt give us a beautiful ending.
This is my honest and unbiased review. Thank you for taking the time to read it. :)
Really enjoyed this book. Both Scott & Sage were wonderfully complicated characters. I enjoyed the heat & intensity between them. Their past made it that much more of a roller coaster ride & made me love it that much more. Thank you to Tule publishing for allowing me to read this book for an honest review.
Another amazing story from one of the most wonderful families in Last Stand, Texas, the Highwaters. Sage Highwater has seen more than her fair share of pain and tragedy. Scott was born into a dreadful loveless family for a painful purpose and the only one who ever understood him was Sage. I adored their relationship and what a strong brave woman Sage is lending her strength to Scott when he needed to find his footing in a world that had been too cruel.
I absolutely loved the chemistry and what each Sage and Scott brought to the relationship and how the baggage and pain didn’t just go away it it was just accepted and the characters learned how to cope. You get the heartwarming romance without it seeming too cheesy and unrealistic
