I get to meet my favorite K-pop star… because he told the world he’s in love with me.
No, I’m not kidding. When Jaemin announces that we’re dating on a livestream, I’m confused and more than a little terrified. I’ve never met him or even been to one of the band’s concerts. So I do what any sane woman would – ignore the situation.
But his agency isn’t about to let that happen.
They hunt me down to try and do some damage control. Their brilliant plan? Pay me to pretend to be his girlfriend. I’ll do my best to help Jaemin… but I fear the line between fantasy and reality may start to blur, and neither of our lives will ever be the same.
Whysteria Rose has been an avid K-pop fangirl for as long as she can remember. She published her first book while still in High School, but has been writing since she was a small child. Her love of storytelling is only growing with every book she writes and she has plans for many more stories. Whysteria is originally from Atlanta, Georgia, she’s currently a college student studying abroad in Japan. She loves spending time with her pet bunny rabbit and collecting merchandise from her favorite K-pop band. When she’s not doing those things, she’s listening to music and dreaming up her next story idea. She hopes to entertain, inspire others to create, and dreams of becoming a full-time author.
“I wake up and remember you exist and everything stops hurting.”
Mythomania reads like a wish-fulfillment fanfiction, except that it’s actually better than one would normally expect.
I am a bit of a fangirl myself. And I have had moments in my life when music was the only thing that could blow through the thick fog threatening to clog my head. Music does heal and can really change a person’s life, shift their moods and perspectives. It’s like a friend who always seems to know just what to say and when to say it to ease the pain. I get that and it bonded me to Isla right away.
But then, there’s getting inspired by the music and being obsessed with the artists behind it. Both can change lives and ruin them. This novel proves just as much and more. Aside from having an inspired fan and an obsessed fan at the center of its story, Mythomania flips the card over and also tosses in an idol who found inspiration in a fan’s words, falling into a dangerous obsession because of it.
It’s an intriguing read that kept me flipping through the pages, itching to uncover the truth behind the mystery and lies. It’s also an annoying read that more often than not reflected my own vulnerabilities (misplaced guilt and a twisted sense of responsibility can really make a person fall into unhealthy relationships—I get that, too). But at the end of it all, it’s also quite an inspiring read, allowing its core characters to learn and grow from their mistakes, proving that our best life really does begin at the end of our dumbest decision.
One complaint I have about the novel, though, is that it failed to convince me that Jaemin had to be a Korean idol, that OT2B had to be a Korean group. A disclaimer at the beginning of the book did warn that certain liberties were taken to pull off certain plot points. If you’re just after the thrills and the romance, I think you will really enjoy this book and easily overlook the flaws. I guess I was just looking for a little bit more cultural feel that goes beyond names, honorifics and bright hair colors.
I received an advance reader's copy of this book to review from Reedsy Discovery.
I read the book when it was on wattpad and I loved it and seeing what you did with it now it’s even more amazing than before loved the ending had me crying a couple times. Overall congratulations it was fantastic
This book was an amazing read. It kept surprising me with different twists I hadn't expected and I never knew what was going to happen next but it all fits together so well and is still enjoyable.
This book wasn't perfect, but it was a nice read. It kept me intrigued, and it's been a while since a book kept me turning the pages like this. Overall, I really enjoyed it. I liked that Isla stood her ground and didn't just let herself get dragged around, we got to see her reasoning behind her actions and I appreciate that. It's the kind of story I enjoy reading, I'm really excited to see how this author improves and develops over time
I am not the target reader for this story. I am twice as old as the characters and prior to reading this story had zero knowledge of Kpop. Therefore the pages that give definitions were helpful. I read this story though because I love possessive and obsessed heroes and I could tell from the book summary that Jaemin was that way about Isla.
I loved how unique the story and the hero are. A famous Korean pop star believes that he loves a fan he has never met, Isla. By contrast, Isla is a normal person whose whole life changes when she becomes a pop star's obsession. Romance and drama including attempted murder, commence when they met. The book had a HEA ending with an epilogue that I liked.
Besides being unique I liked that there was no cheating even though there was a long separation. I really dislike separations, including this one, in part because usually the hero and sometimes the heroine, have sex with OP. However in this case I believe that they were both celibate during the separation even though it was 2 years. While she went on dates none were successful. No mention was made of the hero being with OW and based on how obsessed he was with her and how in love he was I believe that he was faithful as well.
However, I disliked how the heroine had to make the first move to end the separation. She called him. He never contacted her in any way and that bothered me because I am not sure that he would have.
Also, there were not sexy times in this story. While there were a few sex scenes they were all telling and not showing, at least to me. They were very clinical.
In addition, there were too many points of view. Besides the hero and heroine's point of review, there was the CEO's, two members of the band, a psycho's psycho's lovers' points of view etc.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
The fact is, the second a fanfiction is published it is immediately subject to a lot more critique.
Look. I bought the book. I did that. I loved the fanfic format enough to shoot for an original. But it’s a hard truth that it doesn’t hold up anymore when compared to the other books I’ve read for cheaper, whether online or in store. The writing’s just not good. You can’t start a story with “It’s a Saturday morning…” and expect the rest of it to be a knockout.
It’s creative, though. That’s what the second star is for.
My first book by this author snd I absolutely loved it! If you like KPop, this book is for you, this book will make you go through so many emotions, not all of them good. The book deals with mental health and have some triggers but overall the author does a great job of addressing the aspects of the mental health and the importance of proper recovery. Stick with it and you will be glad you did. I just found another book by her so off I go to read it.
I remember reading this on tumblr and being excited every time it was updated. I don’t know why i took so long to read the official novel. I love it so so much, I can’t explain but it’s so easy to read in a very good way, I just kept reading and reading and wouldn’t get tired of it. I love what the author did with it, I always thought it had so much potential! If you are a Kpop and fanfic lover like me, read it!! You won’t regret it :))
I'm a reader of W.H Rose at tumblr and have patiently waited for every chapter to be out when it was still a fanfiction because it was just so good. It was gripping especially at the start of the book. It tackled psychological disorders and may have also included an erotomanic type of delusion. It was entertaining for me to read as a person who is currently taking up psychology in college.
There's no way I could've predicted where this story would twist and turn. The plot had my curiosity on overdrive and flying through the chapters in anticipation of what would happen next. This was a very enjoyable read for me! Reminds me of all the old school KDramas I used to be obsessed with. Looking forward to reading more work from this author!
I have only just started reading this but had to note the song Better by Monsta X really fits the theme imo. Its not one currently listed on the Mythomania playlist though.
