Men of Fort Dale #1

I'm Straight, Right?

alternate cover edition of ASIN B082ZM1QXW

Can a best friend become a lover without throwing away years of friendship?
Sometimes, all love needs is a little courage.

Sloane: I know I can be a grumpy bastard, and I’m not the easiest man to deal with, but you’d think my best friend would trust me. We don’t keep secrets, even about our love lives. That’s what I thought until I found out Dean was seeing someone. I don’t like it...don’t ask me why. But there’s more to the story than I thought, and now I have to deal with feelings I didn’t even know were possible for me.

Dean: I would not recommend being in love with your straight best friend. I met Sloane in Basic Training and fell head over heels. Years later and a deployment under each of our belts, it’s still not easy. All I’ve wanted for six years, six fucking years, was Sloane. Maybe it’s time I moved on. I’ll never have the same feelings for anyone else, but I’ll never get what I want from Sloane, right?

After one slightly drunken night, will Dean and Sloane ever be able to get back to what they’d been, or has everything between them changed forever?

If the thought of a straight guy and his gay best friend regularly cuddling up on the couch to unwind appeals to you, then you'll probably like this book.

When Sloane and Dean first met, as fresh recruits in the military, in spite of their differences, something immediately clicked between the two of them, but only platonically. At least for Sloane.

Dean had kept his love for his best friend as his most closely guarded secret, until Sloane's asshole ways forced Dean into an emotional corner, after which the truth flowed freely, creating an air of awkwardness in their friendship.

The rest of the story consisted of a few steamy scenes and a lot of introspection about how they would work their way back to the close friendship they'd shared before Dean's true feelings were revealed.

I really liked how confident Sloane was that, no matter what happened, no matter what they ultimately decided, there was no acceptable scenario where his life would not include Dean.

This wasn't just a Gay for You story, though. This was a Gay For ONLY You, which is a slightly different animal, but I still found it pretty believable and entertaining.

I mentioned the cuddling before and those scenes, before and after their relationship evolved past friendship, went a long way toward increasing my enjoyment of the book.

The angst was moderate and, while the frequency of the steam was fairly low, the intensity was on the higher (and hotter) side.

I'd rate this story at around 3.75 stars and recommend it to anyone who likes military men, without the actual war parts on-page.

Dean is a Doctor at the base, finally home from his time in the Mideast. He's haunted by what happened to his team after Sloane was sent home. He's always had a crush on his best friend of six years, straight Sloane, a big, Latino, muscled hunk, tattooed, surly and handsome Marine, since they met in boot camp.

Dean has begun to date, to move on from his futile hopes.

We see clear pictures of how deeply these two men care for each other. So, when Dean has to defend his point, he blurts out his secret, and now,
it's Sloane's time to really explore his emotions,

truthfully and with the reality of his deep feelings. The kiss is wonderful, and then there's more exploring on a drunk night, but it opens Sloane's eyes. We see their conflicted thoughts, intense imaginings, and profound love of their best friend that they do not want to lose.

It's GFY, friends to lovers, big/smaller and lots of side characters that were important to our men's lives, Deans nightmares and PTSD event is finally revealed, and Sloane is the only one who now knows how he feels, and while Sloane leans on his tight knit family, Dean's family is absent, aloof and unfeeling.

I like these men, who have already proven how great they get along, as we now see their relationship turn romantic. These are two tough Marines, who deserve the best life can offer.
ENJOY !

A bit abrupt at the end, but I really loved this essentially 'gay for you' military romance

I thought the author did an excellent job of establishing just how close the two men were in their friendship.

The crisis point also worked well for me as the catalyst for their relationship changing and it felt believable throughout

I'd have liked a bit more after they'd got together just to see how everyone else dealt with the situation.

3.5.

GFY and its prettier cousin, BFY, are my big guilty pleasure tropes, so of course you’re going to draw my interest if you throw in Hot Military Men and Secretely In Love With My Friend.

This is a sweet, fairly uncomplicated wish-fulfillment romance with modest angst. The editing could be a teeny bit tighter, but nothing jarring.

I’m docking it a bit because I wasn’t buying Sloane’s utter shift to single-target sexuality. This is the kind of GFY that risks the unfortunate implication of bi-erasure. I can give benefit of the doubt that Sloane has an intensely demisexual interest in Dean, which to the author’s credit is strongly established by the way the two interact, but I was a little bit taken aback by how very “not gay” Sloane is in every other possible context.

TL;DR: Sexy and sweet with hurt/comfort vibe, but beware of blatant GFY if that’s not your thing.

I thought I was going to like this more, but it just didn’t work for me.

I really didn’t feel that Sloane and Dean had the amazing chemistry and connection we were constantly told they had. Everyone kept going on and on about how good they were together and how what they had was “special,” but we don’t actually get to see it? 💁🏻‍♀️

They had some very weird conversations throughout the book, and then after they slept together and decided to finally have a relationship, it felt super anticlimactic. Sloane literally said it felt weird, lol, ok, what a good endorsement!

I guess this author's writing is not for me. I am sorry to say but the story was, for the lack of better word, dull with a lot of awkwardness, no chemistry and the characters that I didn't like at all. I was very glad when it was over. Another author on the No list for me. *sad face*

Despite the title, this is 3rd person POV

Full-on GF-Only-Y..
I liked the friendship in this story. It was solid and intimate.
The rest was...OK.

I’m normally a huge fan of the OFY, but this one made me a little uncomfortable in the sex scenes. I felt awkward for our GFY MC in his first sex scene with his best friend. Maybe that’s the intention of the author—me not feeling the hot, but feeling, “Are you really into this?”

That made me not quite into it.

This was a NTM author and I’m keeping him on my back burner. I’ll wait to see what my GR friends have to say about his other works before diving in unawares.

My rec? It’s on KU, what do have to lose?

I didn't have high expectations for this book, mainly bc the avg rating wasn't very high, but then again, GR ratings and Amazon ratings need to be taken with a grain of salt. Who knows what's real.

Anyway, I liked it. Better yet, it was "free" on KU. But I got this book based on it being on a list for "strong, silent alpha males" or some such. NO MC IN THIS BOOK IS SILENT! I suppose Sloane was supposed to be that, but he's NOT silent. He's just foul mouthed (which I don't mind) and grumpy (which I also don't mind), but I am kinda bummed by the miscategorization. Ugh.

Might read more of this author tho.

They take too fucking long to be together and I wanted more cute and sex scenes.
I love that Dean is in love with Sloan but he still goes out and has fun sex life and even though took him six years to decided to date someone, he actually does that for a month with a nice guy.
During these years Sloan never dated anyone serious. Also this is a GFY and a friends to lovers book. I love their friendship because even thought Sloan identified himself as straight they were always cuddling.

Safety: Dean is dating someone and he fucks that person, but its totally okay because Sloan didn’t even saw himself as anything other than straight. After being intimate it’s practically the end of the book and they are not with anyone else
I wish in all books with unrequited love the person suffering actually acts like dean, having a sex a life and trying to move on

“No one said that being madly in love with your best friend meant you couldn’t get laid” M/F romances should learn that

“I don’t know what that makes me, or if it makes me anything at all. Maybe I’m just, straight for everyone else but you?” Sloan was never with a man and tried gay porn after Dean gave him a bj and it didn’t do anything to him, but only remembering about Dean did the job for him.

“Cue the best night of intimacy he’d ever had, and he could easily claim the best sex as well.” Sloan about their first time together

2★'s = it was ok.

Bummer. It didn't really work out for me like I'd been hoping. Honestly I felt more of a connection between Dean and Marco and kind of hoped they'd have gotten their HEA.

Also, it sounds like from the Authors note this might be part of a series? I didn't realize that when I picked it up.

Really, I didn't hate it I just never connected with Dean or Sloan.

Ehh I felt like this was too short and relationship between Dean and Sloane was rushed.

I did start to lose interest about 50% in but since I got the audiobook book (because Michael Ferraiuolo, no other explanations) I just listened to the book and zoned out a bit…

Overall probably won’t continue with the series but it was cute but I felt like more could happen.

Spoilers - he's not quite as straight as he thought he was! :D

I think this is the first book I have read from this author, although I know several are on my to-buy and to-read list. Solid writing, good chemistry between the two, some angst, some drama, and some sexy times as Sloane and Dean become more than friends.

The military taught me a lot. About being a man, a leader, about working as a team toward a common goal. What didn’t they teach me? How to deal with this irrational, uncontrollable jealousy I suddenly feel when my best friend announces he’s seeing someone. I should be happy for him. But I’m not. All I can think about is how he should be mine. Which isn’t fair to either of us, since I am absolutely, unequivocally straight. At least, that’s what I thought. Until one drunken kiss changed everything. And now I have to decide if I want things to go back to the way they were before that night…Or if I’m finally going to admit I’m in love with my best friend.
When Sloane and Dean first met, as recruits in the military, in spite of their differences, something immediately clicked between the two of them, but only platonically. At least, that is, for Sloane. Dean had kept his love for his best friend as his most closely guarded secret, until Sloane's annoying ways forced Dean into an emotional corner. After that happened, the truth flowed as freely as water, creating an awkwardness in their friendship. The remainder of the story consisted of a few steamy scenes and a lot of thought and discussions about how they might be able to go back to the close friendship they'd shared before Dean revealed his true feelings.

I liked Sloane's confidence. No matter what happened, no matter what they ultimately decide, there was never going to be an acceptable outcome where his life wouldn't include Dean. This wasn't just a "two gay guys hooking up" story...This was a "two gay guys wanting ONLY you" story. I found it completely believable and entertaining. I hate stories that are full of angst...The angst in this one was moderate and tolerable, and the story was enjoyable, I'd recommend it to anyone who likes same sex couples and military men, without an actual war taking place on the pages.

You're in love with your straight best friend. Do you tell him?

OMG ya gotta love men in uniform! This book is full of characters that are well thought out and intriguing . I found myself caught up in their lives. You will too.
Dean has been in love with his best friend for 6 years. Through all the deployments, the only place he has ever felt safe was with Sloane. Even the nice guy he's dating doesn't compare. Sloane is straight, right? So why is he so jealous? When a night of drunken lust shoves everything over the edge, they will have to face their feelings.
This book does have HEA. It also has helpful family, annoying friends, lots of passion, and steamy scenes. You will love this book!
Trigger: there is past wartime trauma. There are nightmares, but nothing graphic. I don't think anyone will be offended.
This book contains adult themes and language, mm sex and is intended for mature readers only.

I stayed up reading all night !
The Friends-to- lovers trope is one of my favorites and there's not many who can get to right.
I love how the author emphasized on the strength of Dean and Sloane's friendship, the way their personalities fit together and the bond they share in the initial chapters.

That was very well done. And quite refreshing to read as most of the stories in this trope start off with there being some sorta sexual tension between the MCs.
I also loved the way the author wrote Sloane's turmoil and how he dealt with his sexuality, his attraction towards his best friend and the weirdness of it all.

Very well done. If you are looking for a great, mild angst and refreshing read in this trope, I highly recommend this book. Will be looking out for more in this series *bats puppy dog eyes at author-Soon please*

This is dramatic, romantic, sweet and funny. Sloane is a big, hulking guy with a permanent scowl on his face who only shows his softer side to his best friend Dean. Dean is an easy going, cheeky and sweet guy who has been in love with Sloane for almost the whole 6 years they've known each other. And Sloane is oblivious to to it. They've always had a comfortable, easy, relationship, if a little more physical than most. But everything blew up when Sloane found Dean out on a date that he didn't know about. He was angry and confused because they always told each other everything. During the confrontation between them the following that night, Dean accidentally told Sloane that he was in love with him. That, and a long conversation with his mother, get Sloane thinking, about how he feels about Dean, and about his own sexuality. It's a really great storyline, but boy it took forever Sloane to open his eyes and mind, but I couldn't put the book down until the very end.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from the author. This is my honest and voluntary opinion of it.

I liked this, I was enjoying it.......right up until things got sexual, weird right? Don't know what went wrong but I just detached. Maybe its the way Sloan's "am so weirded out by finding out that my bf has been in love with me, to I think am into him too" situation was handled.
And Dean's PTSD, him talking to his best friend about it is the moment I was waiting for.....how they reached that point or how they addressed it would've shown me the extent of their bond or how they lean on each other for emotional support. It was too to the point, I think.
And it really didn't help to realise that by the time they were having their relationship crisis or I was already past the 60% mark.
This should have been longer, it being a novella was too short for this kind of story.....in my opinion of course.

KU.

I really liked this short story, but first. The title. Ugh. It sounds like a bad after school special. If I were just browsing, I would have totally skipped this ~ but it was recommended in a reader's group, so I grabbed it.

I'm really glad I did. GFY is hit or miss for me, but it was done really well here. I loved Dean & Sloane's friendship and how it evolved. For such a short story, this packed in a lot of information and didn't feel rushed. I think the PTS maybe could have been expanded on a little more, but it is a short.

I'll be looking for more from this author & series.

A GFY Story

I liked it but don't love it!

Writing is fine , same goes for the heroes and the sexy times. It's just a forgettable story, I probably won't remember in a week.
