Matt Doeden was born in southern Minnesota and lived parts of his childhood in Golden Valley, Minnesota, and Madison, Minnesota. He studied journalism at Mankato State University, where he worked at the college newspaper for three years. In his senior year, he served as the paper's Sports Editor, which put him in charge of the entire sports section, the sports writers, and the photographers. He covered mostly college sports, but also the Minnesota Vikings, who held training camp at MSU.

His work allowed him to meet and interview people like Dennis Green, Cris Carter, Robert Smith, and more. Matt went on to work as a sports writer for the Mankato paper, and then he got a job as an editor with a small children's publisher called Capstone Press, and in 2003 he decided to start his own business as a freelance writer and editor.

Since then, Matt has written and edited hundreds of books. Lots of them are on high-interest topics like cars, sports, and airplanes. He also writes and edits on geography, science, and even math.

This is a book that would be perfect for any hockey fan! Personally, I’ve been watching hockey for about a year now and found the information in this book extremely interesting as a lot of if I was unaware of. The overall tone of the book also made it really enjoyable to read. The way Matt Doeden presents the information and retells the events of the Stanley Cup playoffs is more like a friend recounting these stories than the dry tone I usually find in nonfiction text.

The Stanley Cup Playoffs!
5 shut outs out of 5!

The 2020 playoffs being missed in April due to the NHL being brought to a screeching halt in March with Covid-19 was heartbreaking. Hockey is life! Fortunately, my hockey loving 10 year old daughter and I were able to read and review The Stanley Cup Playoffs by Matt Doeden!

The book, aimed at children's non-fiction readers, provided a colourful and informative history of the origins of hockey and it's iconic trophy, the Stanley Cup. The book also provides some interesting tid-bits and milestone events in hockey's history including key changes to game play, rules and regulation, and shifts related to safety such as helmets and on-ice violence. I appreciated these last pieces as a hockey mom who worries about concussions and potential for violence.

What stood out most for my daughter was the inclusion of women in hockey! She really liked reading about women's journey within the sport and was excited to learn of the connection between the Isobel Cup and the Stanley Cup dynasty! We would have loved to have seen a feature on some of women's hockey greats and how women are changing the landscape in hockey and the NHL.

Overall, the book was engaging and provided new factoids to keep it fresh and interesting. The Stanley Cup Playoffs is sure to please hockey fans, big and small, and sweep the fall series of children's non-fiction releases - bar down!

Thank you to NetGalley and Millbrook Press for an electronic ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Hockey fans will love this book on the history of the Stanley Cup. Included in the book are fun photos and information about famous games in Stanley Cup history. Information is written in easy to understand text at a fifth to eight-grader reading level. The book is updated with the 2019 Stanley Cup championship winner.
Almost every page has text with b/w or color photos helping to keep the reader engaged with the material. This book includes a table of contents, glossary, index, and further reading suggestions.

Very informative, very interesting, and very entertaining as a hockey fan.

My one major complaint is that the second page cuts off as though a section is missing and the interludes between some pages interrupt the flow of information by cutting in midway through. However, this is still a really good book and I enjoyed it.
