This was my favorite book for one of my favorite college classes. An excellent exploration of the history of English as a language. As is the case with most things, understanding how and where English came from dramatically increases the understanding of how to use it now. Rules that I thought were arbitrary are, in fact, based on surprisingly sensible reasons.
This is not a grammar book. It is--as it is so aptly titled--a biography, a story of how the English we speak today came into being. I highly recommend it.
