I wouldn’t normally rate a travel picture book, but this was a candy corn rainbow dreamscape that was a treat to peruse and think of where I might go someday.
A beautifully illustrated book filled with unique travel experience ideas, organized by month of the year. Each location also includes alternate visitation months. Came away with some great ideas such as:
- Maldives snorkeling, Dec-Apr.
- Ottawa: Winterlude Festival in Feb or May for tulip festivals.
- Australia’s Ningaloo in Mar or Nov for divers’ paradise.
- Galapagos Islands: Apr for perfect temps, go snorkeling with penguins, Jun-Aug for blue-footed boobies.
- Malaysia, Apr-Jun for scuba diving coral reefs.
- Iceland in Sep-Oct for the Northern Lights.
- Rome in Apr for mild temperatures and fewer crowds.
- Vermont in Sep and Oct for fall maples, birches, beeches, and alders.
- Australia’s Queensland in Oct for quiet crowds and perfect weather for scuba diving stunning coral reefs.
- Cook Islands in Sep or Oct for vast lagoons and vivid corals.
- Tortola, BVI in Dec for reliably sunny skies, casual eateries, famed emeralds, and old-world feel.
- Vienna in Dec for outdoor sparkling markets.
- Cayman Islands in Mar or Dec for warm water and stunning marine life.
I love DK books. (Is it weird to have a favorite publishers? Because mine is DK. Their books are always top quality.)
Anyway this is a great travel guide, giving the ins and outs of the best times to travel to certain destinations around the world during which time of the year. The book is chock full of information, and the photography is spectacular, which is definitely a DK tademark. The book gives equally time to destinations on all seven continents, highlighting hidden gems among the more well known spots. Being a large, hardback book, it's a steal at $25. You won't be able to stick it in your pocket, though. ;) Even though I don't plan to do any globe trotting any time soon, this book is fun eye candy for dreamers.
LOVELY travel/coffee table book. Really inspiring to look at for future travels, and has information on some unique festivals and experiences which I had never heard of. Absolute classic for any wanderlusty folks.
If you miss traveling as much as I do, this book sure won’t help. But it was impressively researched and organized (it lays out where to go each month of the year, and why), with stunning pictures to go along with each entry.
I loved the writing too—“riots of color,” “sun-warmed lemons hang plump and heavy,” “a ravaged majesty” to share just a few.
And as expected I have new additions to my “must hop a plane and explore just as soon as it’s safe to” list, which was already pretty long. Those additions include: Malaysia, Buenos Aires, (all over) Norway, Ethiopia, Croatia, Mozambique, Corsica, Petra, and (fine, if I must) the Amalfi Coast.
According this book, I'm off by a month for both my Maui (Feb) and Cayman Islands (Nov) trips this year, but who cares--I'm going to Maui and Cayman Islands this year! I wasn't so captured by the idea of this book's organization around when to go where, but the beautiful and alluring photography and just enough enticing information will make you want to go Whenever to many of these places. This will be a great book to return to when making plans or dreaming of where to go next--Charleston or Easter Island in April? Bay of Fundy or Ecuador in September? So many places, so little time.
This book is a beautiful Coffe table book. It is also incredibly helpful! If you travel a lot, this book is a must have. You want to take a month in October, flip to your perfect destination! The pictures and cover are gorgeous as well.
I want to go everywhere! Imagery is stunning and I love that the travel choices are a great mixture from different places, many of which I had never considered.

The structure of the book is great in function but also for finding a new place to read about when you have some spare time. Pictures are very hit or miss, the trip suggestions didn't really match up with my interests, and the information provided is, as should be expected, pretty surface-level most of the time. That being said, I've liked having this on my shelf for the past year.
Great book to read when you are dreaming of all of the fun and beautiful places on this earth to visit. Brief descriptions of why they recommend certain locations for certain months. I like the way this information is laid out. the photoscare gorgeous too
It provides information on the world's most spectacular landscapes, as well as world heritage sites, to help you plan your trip and when is the best time to travel. It would have been easier to read if it were divided by continent.
I was given this as a Christmas present and I have spent hours looking through it since then - it's such a beautiful book.
The book is set out by month and there are about 20 pages per month. In each section (month) it starts with a page overview of all the places that are good to visit at that time of year and puts them under headings (Festivals and culture, Unforgettable journeys, Natural wonders, Luxury and romance, Active adventures and Family getaways). Each destiniation (under one of these headers) then has a paragraph about why to go and then a web address so you can do further research (brilliant idea). It also has a weather watch for all over the world so you can see which regions might appeal to you (depending on whether you want sun or snow etc). The following 18 or so pages are dedicated to more indepth info on some of the destinations. For example there is a section in August on New Zealand and this page includes how to get there, weather, accommodation, how much it will cost 2 people per day on average and also a suggested itinerary. The book goes into detial of about 8 or 9 destinations per month.
Aside to the useful info (not just about what't there when you get there but where to go at particular times of year), the visuals are stunning, breathtaking even. I am a huge fan of the Eyewitness Travel guides anyway as I love to look at the pictures and read about the history and culture of places I have been to (and also places I want to go to) so when I was given this book I was thrilled. It's so much more than a coffee table book and it's one I will treasure for years to come - I can sit for hours looking longinly at the photos.
I highly recommend this book - especially as a gift (you'll be loved for it) or just treat yourself. I hope you enjoy as much as I do.
First off, this is a GORGEOUS book. It would be perfectly at home on your side table, coffee table, or nightstand as on you bookshelf. The cover practically begs to be instagram famous.
Inside...it was a quick read. I would consider buying this book just to keep around for inspiration when I’m feeling a little stir crazy and craving an adventure. There are the usual suspects — India during Holi, Rio during Carnaval, Munich during Oktoberfest — but then there were some places I hadn’t heard of, definitely off the beaten path as far as tourist destinations go. I appreciated that there were a number of recommended times to go that allow you to avoid the height of tourist season, or that advise you to go specifically during a busy time for the atmosphere (think Oktoberfest.)
Is this a comprehensive travel guide? Of course not, and I don’t think that was the purpose. Rather, this book should be a jumping off point for further research and exploration — or simply as something beautiful to look at when your world seems too small.
A wonderful book, and a bargain too at just 10p in the sale at my local library! The main difference between it and other travel books is that this book is split into 12 sections, one for each month of the year. The start of each section lists about 5 ideal destinations for the month (for various reasons such as weather, special events, etc) under each of the following categories; festivals and culture, unforgettable journeys, natural wonders, luxury and romance, active adventures, and family getaways. The following pages then go into more depth about at least one destination from each category. It is really well-rounded overall, and manages to make everywhere sound appealing! The stunning pictures certainly help too! I've definitely got some new ideas for future travel plans, and will keep this book forever to reference back to.
Breathtaking National Geographic-like pictures and a sense of adventure guaranteed. Where to go when? Well, everywhere. This book names the popular and less popular spots and has some interesting takes on what you can do in your vacation and what time may be best to hit certain destinations. The only problem is that you'll need a lot of vacation--nothing short of 2 or 3 years straight! That last part I am still planning...
So if you have a lot of time and money and enjoy travelling, this is for you. If you don't have a lot of time and money, it will be a reason for you to strive for a lot of time and money, as it will reinforce (or awaken) your love for travelling.
Great coffee-table book and a starting point for further, more detailed, vacation planning.
A truly masterpiece among the travel books. The selection and mix of pictures with useful information is spectacular. Let's take an example, page 150/151; Yunnan in China. At one glance i geat a pretty good picture of the area with 9 pictures plus a world map and the location of Yunnan. I can find easily Dos and Don'ts, getting there, getting around and what not to miss. This book finds the perfect balance between a large collection of travel ideas and sufficient information on the recommended location. Many other books simply overload the reader with too many ideas while not providing sufficient pictures/information. With'Where To Go When, DK achieved a masterpiece among travel books! Comment
As a follow up to the book my mom gave me for my birthday, Mom gave this to me for Xmas...and even better than the "1000 Places" book. Perfect for if you think you can squeeze out a week or two for a vacation at a random time of the year - and gives you GREAT options to think about heading to (at what is their ideal time to go) as it is broken down month by month! Rarely during their tourist season - which is also perfect!) So you pick a month and it lists your options -all of them very cool -and GREAT photos. GREAT GIFT for a traveler!
I opened it and thought to myself "darn, now I can't get this for my dad for a present!"
Overall, I thought this was an interesting book. I didn't wouldn't actually use it to go to theses specific places at that specific time, but each guide to each place was interesting and accurate. It definitely made me add some more places to my bucket list. One thing that I loved were the pictures. They were all beautiful and full of color. The calendar at the end that said when those big events were happening was also helpful.
A wedding gift from my brother, this book provides snap shots of some amazing sights of the world and gives suggestions of the best time of year to see them. -- Whether its the Northern Lights in Norway in January, the Chicago river flowing green for St. Patrick's Day, a coast to coast summer train ride through Canada or the beautiful fall foilage of Vermont in September, this book will have you itching to plan your next adventure.
This is one of my favorite travel "coffee table" books. The pictures are beautiful and the recommendations are excellent, too. Sure, some suggestions might not be perfect or feasible due to current strife in some locations, but all travelers must rely on common sense. Pleasing to both the armchair traveler and the intrepid traveler alike.
Enjoyed looking at this travel guide. Beautiful pictures and great inspiration for trip planning. There isn't step by step info on how to plan the trip, but the basics are there. I will say that most of these trips will be costly so for me it became a bit dreamy. It would be nice to see this book done with budgeting in mind and one just for the states.
This was a fun book to look through and read. I read the book to my kids...we chose two/three of the destinations at a time, looked at the pictures, read about the location, and then had to choose which of the two (or three) we would pick for a trip. It was a fun activity and my youngest (age 9) especially liked it.
