I received a free Kindle copy of this book from a Goodreads giveaway. I quite enjoyed this book! Little Mouse and his feline friend Mr. Opus take a trip to the zoo and discover new animals. They are surprised to find that, despite their differences, many animals can move in the same way, practicing “yoga” poses.
Overall this book is a great way to introduce kids to the universal practice of yoga, how fun it can be, and that it can harbor connection with others. Plus the illustrations are adorable! My one critique would be that it does little to actually teach the yoga poses themselves and only partially explains why we should develop a practice of yoga (to calm our minds when we are scared). Yoga is so much more than just calming fear! I would be very interested to read this author’s others books to see how she goes about teaching poses and proper form. I would be happy to introduce my future kids to the wonderful practice of yoga in this way!

Yoga at the Zoo is the fun story of Little Mouse and his friend Mr. Opus the cat, going on an exciting but overwhelming trip to the zoo with Tammy McDoodle and her classmates. Along the way he makes new friends and gets out of stressful situations by doing yoga poses in this charming new picture book by Teresa Power. We have all of her other books in our collection.

STRETCHING THE MIND AND BODY

What a fun and excellent story for a child and reader to enjoy together. Little Mouse is a curious creature who loves to learn, has a best friend in a cat named Mr. Opus. In this story, there is talk about doing yoga and also going to visit the zoo. Little Mouse and Mr. Opus will meet many animals, like a giraffe, flamingo, elephant, and lion.

Sometimes, simple things like learning stretches or yoga can be better related when you see things like the giraffe stretching it's neck high and tall, the flamingo balancing on one leg, swinging your arm like an elephant's trunk, and then quieting the mind as the lion did. I can imagine laughing and trying the various poses with the reader and child.

I look forward to more books of Little Mouse Adventures.

I won a Kindle copy of this book during a Goodreads giveaway. I am under no obligation to provide a review and do so voluntarily.

Cute characters and a laid-back, fun setting create a wonderful atmosphere for young listeners to learn a tiny bit about yoga.

Little Mouse lives in a burrow and has a warm, calm life. His best friend, Mr. Opus, is a cat next door and sometimes, they watch the family there practice yoga. Sometimes, Little Mouse even tries the poses himself. When the girl goes to the zoo on a school field trip, he and Mr Opus tag along—Little Mouse is so curious about the other animals! There they not only meet new friends but have a little fun as well.

Little Mouse and his friend, Mr Opus, the cat, are a lovely duo. The book starts with a quick glance at Little Mouse's life in the burrow and visiting Mr. Opus. While many yoga books for kids concentrate heavy on the yoga and dive right in, this one takes more of a traditional tale form, allowing Little Mouse and Mr. Opus to develop as true characters. There's a lovely plot as Little Mouse gets a chance to take his first trip to the zoo...leaving yoga as a secondary message, which slides right along with the tale.

The illustrations are very well done and add lots of little details. We enjoyed just gazing at these and enjoying each scene. The characters are nicely depicted and the tale comes to life on every page.

As to the yoga, this book surprised me. While yoga is definitely present and listeners will want to try the poses themselves, the aspect is actually pretty subtle. It's lightly explained that yoga calms and helps clear the mind, but this is built wonderfully into the story and not preached. The different poses aren't delivered in clear, instructive form, but also flow right along with the story. For example, the giraffe stretches his neck to eat leaves, speaks to Little Mouse, who then stretches his neck too. But it's built in so seamlessly, that it's not blatantly clear that they are illustrating a yoga pose. Especially young listeners are lead into yoga in this way without feeling like they're being forced.

This is a great introduction to a series, and it will be fun to see where it goes next and how the author continues in this path.

This beautiful story features two very unlikely friends – Little Mouse (a young, sweet mouse) and Mr. Opus (a wise and friendly cat). The two make the most unlikely pair but are the greatest of friends. This is such an important message for children – that we are not what society defines us. The best friendships develop when and where we least expect it to. In this book, they go on quite the adventure together – to a zoo!

On a typical day, in the morning Little Mouse goes to school but the afternoons are spent with Mr. Opus. He learns the power of yoga not only from young Tammy but also all the animals at the zoo when they go on their adventure with her. He learns how to calm his mind through his favourite pose (child’s pose), which is so important for children. Our youngest has been learning yoga and meditation at school, which we feel is so important for him. Children, like adults, have strong emotions but sometimes don’t have the tools they need to deal with them and learn how to quiet the stress of their minds (to be honest there are some adults who struggle with this skill too!). Yoga gives them these skills and we see this in this book when Little Mouse encounters an initially perceived scary and stressful situation. As he uses child’s pose, he is able to calm his mind and look at the situation differently. And the stressful situation that was perceived? Not so scary and stressful once we learned both sides.

This is a beautifully written and illustrated book for children that we enjoyed reading together. It was easy to read together, with characters that you couldn’t help but love. Little Mouse is just a lovely and curious character with a good heart – such a positive example for children as they begin to explore their world. This is a wonderful addition to your home library.

Are you looking for a good book for your children to learn to destress? Well, Yoga at the Zoo does this though a cute way. Two main animals go on adventures. It quite fun to see and how to learn to calm down using Yoga poses.

Little Mouse sees his human friend and watches her and her mother. You will find this adventure sweet and silly. But maybe some animals do use some Yoga poses. Little Mouse seems intrigued once he hears where his human friend is going with her class. Little Mouse's best friend comes along as well.

The author does quite well with the story. I think the pictures are well done. I love how they show the poses. You will want this book along with the second one for your child or children.

It a good way to teach children exercises. It also a good calming yourself as well.

I loved this quick and cute book! The illustrations were so well done. It's so awesome to see such detailed, well done and beautiful artwork in a book about learning. Little Mouse goes on an adventure with his friend Mr. Opus to the Zoo. There he meets several animals and learns a different yoga pose. He practices them at home that night, which is totally adorable. Yoga is beneficial for all people and that's something that I don't think is quite excepted all over. I really respect how the author kept it simple for younger readers but made it appealing to all readers. It's the perfect sit down book to share with a little one!

I read this book online. It was a fantastic book. It would be fun to read it together with a child online but I think it would be better to read a hard copy (book.). I enjoyed this introduction to Yoga and it would be great for kids to read with an adult, a parent or older sibling or friend. It teaches important concepts that will help to improve the quality of life for children. It is written at a level that young children can understand. I especially liked the “quiet voice” which introduces a way to calm oneself if a child feels agitated or upset. It shows several Yoga poses. The illustrations are adorable and shows the Zoo animals in various easy positions. This is Book 1 and I want to purchase a copy for my grandsons. I think kids would look forward to reading the next books in the series.

What an adorable book!!! I love this book on two levels... The first level is that it’s a cute, fun story of a mouse and his furry best friend going to the zoo and meeting new friends. On a deeper level, it teaches simple yoga poses and how kids (and mice) can use them in stressful situations. This is a perfect book to read to smaller children during story time or before bed. Gorgeous illustrations and colors!!!

I received this book from a Goodreads giveaway

The story, art, and overall message in this book are wonderful. I received an ebook version, but if the physical version is durable (a MUST for kids!) I'd buy it in a heartbeat. Excellent companion to AlphaBreaths.

Quiet mind

Little mouse learns that yoga is for more than just posing when he meets some animals at the zoo. He also learns that little animals can startle big animals when they run into their homes.

I often have to berate books for having a lesson side, and forgetting completely about being a thing of entertainment, but this is almost too much the other way. We're in the hands of a yoga expert here, but only really end up doing two or three things, as we see an eager mouse go on a day trip to the zoo. And it could be said that someone could easily read through this and not notice they were supposed to have joined in. I mean, the tale here is no classic, but is perfectly pleasant; it's just the educative side is so low down in the mix for a change that it really had to be noted. Very enjoyable art livens up the pages, and this will be a most inoffensive volume to have around. Three and a half stars.

I want to thank Teresa Anne Power, author and Goodreads First Reads Giveawayf or the eBook Kindle copy of Yoga at the Zoo ~ Little Mouse Adventures ~ Book 1 that I won in the Giveaway on Goodreads.

Little Mouse tries yoga with the family next door. Then he joins them on a school trip to the zoo where he and his friend, the cat go around talking to different animals until it was time to go home. The preschooler's like it when they discover it is a fantasy because animals don't talk. This lead to a discussion of pretend and how much fun it was to read books that were pretend stories compard to true stories. I often used it with another book I had in the classroom about a real zoo and it's animals. Made it a good learning experience for the preschoolers in my classroom.

This was a cute book featuring a cat and mouse who take a trip to the zoo. During their trip they discover that each animal has their own unique yoga poses. Although that wasn't really stated and it could've been. Something such as "Mouse realized that each new creature had it's own special yoga pose. He wondered if they even realized they were doing yoga!" something to that effect. Overall it's a cute book.

This is a very nicely illustrated story book about a little mouse & his friends. You can even learn some fun relaxing yoga poses! The story & the illustrations are like a 'warm fuzzy!' I think it'd be fun to read to the little ones. There is just enough text to illustration ratio. I received a hard back copy of the book, & thought it was done very nicely, very sturdy pages! This is a gem of a book!
I won this copy in a Publishers Weekly Grab a Galley contest, and have read it & post this, my own, fair & honest review. Thanks to Stafford House Books for sharing!

This cute picture book features a mouse and a cat who are best friends. They tag along on a school trip to the zoo and meet some of the animals there. This simple story provides a framework to introduce several simple yoga poses to young children. The illustrations are charming, and the book is a good idea, but I would have enjoyed more yoga poses, to keep little bodies in continuous motion throughout the telling.
