American preacher, radical religious philosopher, and utopian socialist.
He founded the Putney, Oneida, and Wallingford Communities and is credited for having coined the term "free love".
When he was 20, Noyes underwent a religious conversion, committing himself to the religious life. He embraced Perfectionism, the idea that it was possible to be free of sin in this lifetime.
A very good read on the history of American Socialism that was put into practice in numerous small communities on the eastern side of the US in the first half of the 19th century. It read objectively in reporting the accounts of the practice, of explaining the theories, and providing truth of the results. This should be required reading for history and social science courses, a good start into reading about socialism. Definitely would recommend thus book.
Overview of associationist and communalist comunes set in the East of the United States. Besides the last two chapters on Shakerism and the Oneida community it doesn't go into fringe religion territory. The other chapters are probably more interesting for people interested in local history.
