Rate this book
Rest your mind, body, and spirit and focus on God's principles for keeping the Sabbath with this helpful guide from bestselling author Robert Morris.
A constant stream of busyness can slowly wear away at us over time: physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually. In TAKE THE DAY OFF, Pastor Morris explains why rest is central to your wellbeing, how to do it, and how helpful it can be. You will be inspired to experience true rest and make it a priority in the rhythm of your weekly schedule. Don't wait and delay God's blessings in your life. It seems like whenever I ask some one how they are these days that they tell me they are "busy." I have been guilty of doing the same thing but in Take the Day Off by Robert Morris, Morris reminds us that God wants us to take time to rest too.

We may wonder, who has time to rest? Morris says he knows it is a difficult in our modern world but God gives us a command to rest for our own benefit--as well as those around us. Morris tell us in one chapter entitled The Four Tanks that we are at our best when we rest and fill our four tanks--our spiritual tank, our physical tank, your emotional tank, and you mental tank. Through Take the Day Off, Morris offers a lot of solid advice from his own experience, the experience of others and from the Bible about how we can best take time to rest and give ourselves a Sabbath day every week. However, he not only talks about the importance of resting one day a week, but he talks about how important it is to take a vacation and/or a sabbatical later in the book.

I truly appreciate how Morris writes in such a way that I can read and understand his books so easily without feeling like he is talking down to me. I also liked that Max Lucado wrote the forward to this book as he is another favorite author/preacher. Take the Day Off was convicting, but I didn't feel like I was in it alone. Morris always comes across as a preacher who understands and can relate to those he ministers to and writes to. I also liked how well he explained the Bible passages both in their context and how to interpret them for today's world. For me, this book is one to keep in my library and refer to. I would encourage you to read Take the Day Off too if you are in need of rest to rejuvenate your health and well-being.

This is a MUST READ for every Christian. This book is jam-packed with important ideas that are overlooked and have been misused and misunderstood. First and foremost, the idea that the commandment about the Sabbath is the forgotten commandment that is not taken seriously whatsoever. And then the idea that giving God the Sabbath is a gift for us not take from us, the same way that tithing is for us and not to take money away from us.
Morris guides us through how God stressed this commandment to him, the difference between the Old Testament Sabbath and the idea of the Sabbath for us New Testament believers, as well as practical ways to apply the principle of the Sabbath. He breaks down the four tanks that we need to take rest in, and gives examples of godly rest for each tank. It makes so much spiritual sense, I wonder how so many churches and leaders are missing it.
I could go on and on about the eye-opening and fascinating nuggets taken from this book.
Just when I thought the book was wrapping up and perhaps would become redundant (as so many books do toward the end), I reached the last chapter. It was by far my favorite chapter, but only because of the build-up of all of the other chapters leading there.

*Thank you to the publisher for a review copy of this book. My opinions are my own.

This is really such a great study of why God intended us to rest for a day. Each week! It also reframed my ideas of what such a day should look like. If you always feel like you can't 'live up to that standard' or 'you don't have time to take a day off', then read this book.

It's not about spending the entire day praying and reading your Bible (though that should definitely be a part of it), the book explains we have four energy tanks that we each need to fill up on that Sabbath day of rest. So besides the spiritual, it is also a time for your friends and family, your hobbies etc. It is not a time for cleaning the house, mowing the lawn or prepping for a busy work week. And I loved that and needed that message! I encourage everyone who wants a deeper relationship with God and who wants to receive His full blessing to read this book.

I needed to read this book. I think most people do nowadays. In it were some very simple and powerful truths. My favorite: "Choosing to rest on the Sabbath requires trust." Trust that God will bless your efforts in the other 6 days abundantly that you will get everything done you need without working on the 7th day.

The book went deep into the spiritual truths behind the Sabbath and why it is not only important for yourself, but more importantly is honoring God and following his command of taking the Sabbath. Also talked about sabbaticals and how they are also rooted in the biblical principle of giving the land and people who work it rest every 7 years. Very valuable things to think about and ponder. So glad I read it.

Much needed rest. Could really have used this message when working fulltime and raising kids. Talks about refilling our empty tanks on a weekly basis.

If I could recommend a book that everyone should read, this would be one of them. Pastor Morris explains the importance of the 4th commandment (which he says is the most overlooked commandment), and why it’s so important to receive God’s gift of rest (Sabbath). Too many of us live with little to no margin, which can take its toll on us. This book was eye-opening and was such a gift to read. I took notes as I read, and here are a few standouts:

- Choose one day each week to rest and refresh yourself; this slow, still environment leads to renewal
- As a believer, you carry the light of God in you. But if you’re depleted, you’re an ineffective transmitter of that light
- Take time to fill your 4 tanks: spiritual, emotional, physical, and mental
- If you don’t put the big rocks in your jar first, you’ll never get them in at all
- God rested on the 7th day; He modeled this principle from the beginning; why should we think we can get away with not following His example?
- A refusal to rest and recharge not only affects you but also the people you love. It robs them of the grace-filled version of you that they need in their lives.

A good overview of why a Sabbath rest is important. It covers scriptures, blessings for keeping the Sabbath as well as reasons we may prevent ourselves from entering God's rest.

It's an easy-to-read book. It quotes Hebrews, John and a few Old Testament references on why we need a Sabbath rest. Pages 190-191 list reasons people miss God's rest such as unbelief, striving, lack of diligence and dead works. It stresses that Sabbath rest is about life, not law (PG 104). The Sabbath is there to rejuvenate us.

The author states in chapter 3 that we all have 4 tanks that need to be filled. He says our spiritual tank is filled by the Lord's strength, our physical tank is filled by rest, our emotional tank is filled by joy, and our mental tank is filled by focusing on God as in Philippians 4: 6-7. I agree, but would add that our spiritual needs are satisfied by God's presence and refreshment (PG 128-129). We need the Sabbath so we reconnect with God and don't forget about Him. Our physical needs also include sleep. Our emotional needs include lamenting or crying out to God about our lives, and our mental needs include trusting God as in Psalm 46:10. We must focus on God and believe in who He is as well as believe what He says.

I think this is a good reminder to Christians about the Sabbath, but I'm not sure it is for Jewish believers. They'll find good words in this book, but not a Hebraic perspective. The Sabbath is one of the 10 commandments, and it's a perpetual covenant. The commandment states that the Sabbath is on the 7th day of the Lord. It's holy. I used to believe that the day didn't matter. But when God told me to follow Saturday Sabbath, my blessings increased.

The final chapters give instructions on what to do on Sabbath to find rest (PG 202-203). Be quiet and wait on God silently as in Psalm 62:1. Focus and turn to God. Remind yourself of His goodness. Talk to God and bring your concerns to Him as Philippians 4:6 says. Listen for God to speak to you and renew your mind. Renewing your mind is replacing false ideas with truth (PG 210). Let the Spirit of God guide you into truth and tell you God's thoughts and what's to come (John 16:13-14). Put God first and you'll live life with abundance, peace, joy, power, satisfaction, and fruit. These come from being with God, being His branch as spoken of in John 15. Don't be distracted from spending time with God. Good instructions and advice.

In Take the Day Off, Robert Morris opens up about how we need to take a sabbath day where we can truly rest and become refreshed to carry out our God given assignment. He begins the book by revealing how stress is negatively affecting every one of us. He shared some shocking truths from studies about how stress is now the fifth leading cause of death. Next, Morris dives into the ten commands and looks at one of the forgotten ones which discusses that the sabbath day is the Lord’s holy day. He also reveals how God explained to Moses that His people were not to supposed to work. God created the Heavens and Earth in six days and God rested on the seven day. Morris opens up about how he struggled with resting and having a sabbath day. In the book, he discusses how he had to choose and fight for a sabbath day and he explains the different things he does on his rest day. He goes into vast detail about our four tanks, spiritual, physical, emotional, and mental that need to refilled. He explained that it didn’t have to all overly spiritually that we just need to find things that refresh us. Some of the examples he included was, read a book that you enjoy, solve jigsaw puzzles, hang out with good friends, enjoy being in nature, take a walk, and do anything that refreshes your life. Morris shared that we need to unplug and avoid social media and work-related tasks on our sabbath day.

I would recommend this awesome book to anyone who is tired of being overworked and they feel burned out on life and their purpose. Life is only getting busier and the sabbath mindset is going away. We’re conditioned to work and work harder to stay ahead. I liked how Morris shared that his own personal sabbath isn’t on a Sunday. It also doesn’t have to be overly spiritually some people just do things that help them to refocus their lives and help them to be refreshed. I will admit I don’t have a day which I call just my sabbath day. I recognized now how important it is to do this to help honor God’s commandments and also how to destress our lives. I appreciated some of the stories and examples he shared about how others spend their sabbath days. I’m willing to try and have a sabbath day as a regularly day of the week in order to help me to refocus and refresh my mind, soul, spirit, and body.

This book is written to encourage Christians to observe the Sabbath- one day a week of rest in God from our busy, chaotic, overstimulated lives.
First off, I agree with the principles in this book. I think rest is so important. I concur with the author's use of scripture to make his arguments on the importance of observing a Sabbath.
However, I gave three stars for two reasons.
1. The author promotes his other book relentlessly. I get so annoyed when self-help (I realize this is not strictly a self-help, more like a God-help, book) authors quote themselves or talk about other books they've written.
2. More importantly, I almost didn't make it past the prologue. The book I read right before this was Unsettling Truths: The Ongoing, Dehumanizing Legacy of the Doctrine of Discovery which thoroughly examined the lies we Americans tell ourselves about our exceptionalism. Then I read in this book, "With God's providential help, the founders created a dynamic place where class or station at birth meant almost nothing. Anyone willing to work hard, sacrifice, and apply themselves could achieve anything." HA! Tell that to hundreds of thousands of slaughtered natives and their traumatized descendants. What about the millions of slaves and the continued legacy of an unequal justice system that tramples the rights of people of color. Tell that to the women who couldn't vote or participate in said marvelous founding. Robert Morris is a white man of a certain generation; of course, from his experience his quote is true. This country was founded to benefit white, landowning men. That does not negate the principles found within the book, but that initial prologue praising America and its supposed exceptionalism made turning the next page quite difficult.

One last funny quote. During the time I have been reading this, the world has gone on lockdown due to COVID-19. In Chapter 7, the author writes, "If you're waiting until your schedule magically creates some time for rest for you, it will simply never happen." Oh Robert, never say never.

Take The Day Off is a Christian living book by author Robert Morris. Forward by Max Lucado. Western civilization has an epidemic and it’s called busyness. We have forgotten how to rest.

On my first glance of this book, I was impressed because of the abundance of scripture used, along with scripture references. I believe the author has used good solid teaching in his book.

Quote: “If you don’t put in the big rock of rest, your schedule may always be full, but four key parts of who you are will be constantly running on empty.” (P# 48)

The Sabbath is God’s gift to us. When I began reading I thought “Sabbath” rest would be on Sundays only. However, it’s any day of the week you set aside to rest. Which includes abstaining from social media, t.v., work, or anything you normally do. This is a day for you to spend alone time with God.

I learned God created “work” as a gift. Man is not to be workaholics. Adam was created to tend the land. Work didn’t become work as we think of it until after the fall of man.

To sum up this book in a quote from the author: “He will faithfully provide for you spiritually, physically, emotionally, and mentally if only you’ll trust Him enough to just rest.” (P #156)

I recommend this book to fans of Christian living books, and anyone who has a busy life. It’s not too long, so you will have time to read it.🤗

MY THOUGHTS ON THIS BOOK

This is a very interesting book. Robert Morris knows from experience how it is to be tired, stress out, and really just completely out of it because of the demands of life. Our society has completely forgotten what it means to ‘remember the sabbath’ because now days, everything goes on Sunday as if it is any other day. We forget to rest.

As I read through this book, so much of it hit right at me, because I’m with everyone else, I don’t give God the one day he requires from us. I appreciate that Robert Morris is so honest as he tells of his own struggles with these issues. And gives us as Christian’s what we should do in order to have that day of rest we all need to experience. I’m old enough that I remember when stores were closed on Sunday, and we would spend the afternoon after church with family and friends. People would actually visit each other on Sunday afternoons. I miss that time, and though it will never be like that again, we can choose to make the sabbath our day of rest.

This is a book that every Christian should read! I want to read it slow, a few pages a day, to fully get the meaning of this book. If you haven’t read Take the Day Off, I strongly encourage you to check out this book. And what a wonderful book to give friends and family for Christmas!

A copy of this book was given to me by the author or publisher. I am not required to write a positive review. The opinions here in this review are totally mine alone. I am disclosing this with my review in accordance with the Federal Trade Commission’s 16 CFR, Part 255.

Robert Morris’ Take The Day Off is a book that will bring you from a place of weariness and burn out to a place of faith and understanding of what a true rest from God the Father is. This book has the ability to change your life when the wisdom found inside is applied. The one thing I admire about Morris’ books are that they are jammed packed with biblical wisdom. For me personally, he brought me a revelation of what ‘sabbath being made for man’ truly means. This book was published at a time in my life where I was weary and needed a true rest. I was working 70+ hours a week as a salaried employee and felt that there was no way out. However, my desire was to honor God on the Sabbath because while reading this book I knew the benefits and what a gift sabbath truly is. In Take The Day Off some of the profound points that Morris had made is that we so easily stray away from the importance of Sabbath when God placed Sabbath in the 10 commandments. He also shared some of his testimony on how observing the Sabbath was learned and how it drastically changed his life.
Overall, I love this book and the wisdom found on every single page. This is a book that I prayed for. Before reading this book, I did not understand Sabbath or how to observe Sabbath. But with Robert Morris greatest book yet, Take The Day off I was given revelation of what Sabbath is and how much it can benefit every single one of us. This book goes in my top five favorite books because it has changed my life. I give Take The Day Off 5 stars and recommend it to everyone who deals with the world we live in today.

I completely needed this book.y life has become so hectic and stressful that I never felt like I could take any time off for myself. If I had free time, I spent it cleaning or trying to get stuff done ahead so it wouldn't be so crazy later. I was completely burning myself out. When I saw this book, I knew I had to give it a try. I am so glad I did.

This book was so helpful and easy to read. It didn't take a lot of time to read, because obviously I didn't feel like I had any extra time. It gave some amazing practical advice and changed the way I thought about rest.

The author was in the same place I was. Overwhelmed and needing a break. Reading this book never made me feel like I was being talked down too, he has been there! It was like taking advice from a sweet friend who you know went through the same struggle.

I highly recommend this book to anyone! Seriously, we all need this book. This world has become too destination driven and stressed. Do youself a favor and pick up this book.

Take the Day Off: Receiving God's Gift of Rest by Robert Morris is exactly the book I need to read and read again this season of my life. God has definitely put me in a season of rest, which has been difficult, but also refreshing. This book is perfect for this season and has put a good perspective on what I am going through.

Pastor Morris says over and over again in this book it is difficult for us to "just be." This statement is so true for my life. When I am praying and listening to God, I feel that I need to be doing something, rather then being. In the world and culture we live in, we get our identity in the things we do, not by "just being" in the presence of God and I loved this book for it. It made me realize I had a wrong defination of "just being" and I wasn't looking to God for his definition, but the worlds. This book gave me a different view on rest and helped me see it through the lens of Jesus.
If you are burned out and weary, looking to understand rest, this book is a great gift of understanding what that means! I really enjoyed reading this book!

An excellent review of the Sabbath and why we all need to take a Sabbath--a day off--every week.
Pastor Morris does an in-depth analysis of where the sabbath comes from and why we need to make sure we take a day of rest every week.
I appreciate his insight that God didn't need to take a day off at the end of creation. He did it as an example for us of how he designed us to make sure we rest and recharge.
Pastor Morris shows us the spiritual, social, physical, and relational benefits of taking a day off. For the workaholics among us, he demonstrates that we can accomplish much more in six days with a day of rest than seven days we no rest.
He also recommends taking a sabbatical periodically. This is a longer period of time to renew and recharge and refocus. Not an active, overly booked-and-overly busy vacation, but a time to stop and think. He points to the benefits of a husband and wife doing this together to refocus on their relationship and set a vision for the direction they want their marriage to go.
Feeling burned-out and stretched to your limit? Read this book and apply what it says. You'll be blessed.

I have read other books by Robert Morris so I was excited to start "Take the Day Off." Morris talks about his own personal stories, even sharing his near-death experience from internal bleeding. He also shares Biblical texts, Medical Statistics, Health reports and other Experts to further prove his points. Morris talks about how he experienced a meltdown pastoring a rapidly growing Church because he didn't properly take days off for years and years. Morris lists the signs of burnout or emotional exhaustion. He points to the Christian-owned companies that are closed on Sundays and are still blessed because of that choice. Morris talks about fueling the four tanks: your spiritual tank, your physical tank, your emotional and mental tank. Chapter Five is all about how to "Treat Yourself." Morris explains the power of a Sabbatical and also explores the fears we face as to why we don't take a Sabbath day once a week. He explains to the readers not to be legalistic but instead to view the Sabbath rest as a necessary gift.

Do it now!

The last three words sum up Pastor Robert's whole invitation to us to learn about the commandment of God to honor the Sabbath and keep it holy...meaning set apart. It is a day dedicated to refilling your four depleted tanks of spirit, mind, emotions, and body through rest. Pastor Robert puts forth a lot of information, personal experiences, and reasons to persuade us as to the significant importance the Sabbath plays in our lives. He keeps it Biblically grounded. He even extends the subject of rest into the experience of the sabbatical. Because of his writing style and personal stories, it's a warm, friendly, fun read...but it packs a 👊, so be ready for it! I plan to practice the Sabbath now in my own life. It's a great book, and I highly recommend it, especially if you want to increase your faithfulness, service, and obedience to God. After all, the Sabbath is a commandment, as weighty in God's eyes as the other nine!

Take the Day Off by Robert Morris is a timely book. In an age where everyone is hurrying, stressed and burning both ends of a candle, we need a reminder that we CAN get it all done in 6 days. Morris likens taking a day off to an act of faith, that God WILL provide us with all the time we need once we give some of that time to Him. I enjoyed the section on the four tanks. Morris tells us that we have four tanks that need to be filled: spiritual, physical, emotional, and mental. I know that when any of these are depleted, my whole life feels it. I appreciate his explanation of this as well as his encouragement in taking the time off. The author explains that God's commandments are in place for our good not for our punishment. He then explains that the commandment to rest on the Sabbath day helps an individual to flourish. God rested one day of the week; therefore, we, His creation, should also rest (as commanded) one day of the week. The repercussions of not resting on the Sabbath can affect us on the spiritual and physical levels. Not resting can also impact our witness to others in a negative way, as it is difficult to be joy-filled and encouraging when we are tired and grumpy as a result of never resting. Christians should trust that God will provide the strength and ability for us to complete all of the tasks we need to complete within six days. Not doing this is a lack of trust and pride issue. Very convicting!

When I read the book description, I knew this book was one I had to read. This is such a timely book … just the reminder I needed to hear at this point in my life. It’s very hard for me to “just be” and take time for rest, but Morris pointed out things that made me realize how I need to add this to my schedule ASAP before complete burnout occurs.

This book encourages the importance of having a day all to yourself, without distractions, cell phones or social media. Pastor Robert Morris shows Biblical aspects on why it is important to schedule a day like this each week, along with what to and not do during that day, as well as defines the difference between a vacation and a day off.
This was an enjoyable read with a few flaws though. For an in depth review, visit : https://lancewrites.wordpress.com/201...

I think this book was written for me. I am so busy that resting is not part of my daily life. I lay down to sleep but worry about everything. This book was an eye opener. It has a lot of insight from both new and old testaments. I love this book! Jesus wants us to rest and it should be so simple.
This book is highly recommended if you are like me and don't really know what resting means. The cover alone was relaxing!

I enjoy listening to Pastor Robert speak and love his writing style as well. I started reading Take A Day Off shortly after leaving a job that was pulling me back into a less than relaxed state once I returned home each evening. Pastor Robert's words were timely and gave me much to consider as I now find myself in the position to pursue my entrepreneurial dream. I will be sure to "take a day off" as directed by Pastor Robert but more importantly, by his Boss.

There are a bunch of books out there about rest and stillness and the sort...and most of them are written by non-Type A individuals that I have no ability to relate to. THIS was a breath of fresh air. Especially in ministry, I get that whole "I feel guilty when I take a day off" feeling - it's done a bit of ruling in my life. Morris writes his "how" so strongly that I've found myself applying this Sabbath principle before the book was completed. Solidly done.

A very refreshing read that opens your mind to the intent of the 4th commandment from the covenant with the Lord. Told from a spiritual perspective, it is easy to see how this message extends beyond the covenant in order to build a healthy and productive life in which you and your family will benefit. After reading this message, you will understand the 4 tanks that needed continued refilling along with the full effects of a regular sabbatical.

This book was gifted to me and was right on time as I grapple with healthy balance in leadership. I could relate to the author’s anecdotes and appreciate practical steps for taking sabbath. We as Christians are commanded to sabbath as God created it for himself and lovingly shared it with us. There will never be a perfect time but like the other commandments the sacrifice of keeping them far outweigh ignorance.

Interesting read. The first book in a long time I had interest in and couldn’t seem to put down. Definitely all things I want to have in my life and strive for. If your life is too busy to realize the happiness of others around you take the time to read this book and get an insight to the sabbath day of rest. I will definitely take the advice and add a day of sabbath to my weekly schedule.

This is a good book on Sabbath and very timely for me. I am “in between” a crazy busy career and whatever the Lord shows me is next. I did not do Sabbath well before and He is teaching me now., so I can take this discipline (gift?) into the future. The book had some good practical tips and Biblical references. LOVE the last chapter - which is all about Jesus!!

A book about the Sabbath. The Sabbath doesn't have to be a certain day but a day that you set aside. A little hard to read sometimes I would have to re-read some sentences over. Loved having the footnotes at the bottom of the pages.
