It’s the story. . . The legend. . . The mystery that everyone knows and loves. And now it’s retold for RH. On a fateful night in December 1917, the Romanov monarchy was destroyed. Tsar Nicholas was forced to abdicate the throne and the royal family was put under house arrest. If you were of royal blood, there was no escape from the dissidence of the people. But one Romanov managed to get away. Anastasia- the Tsarevna, or Tsar’s youngest daughter. Disguised, Anastasia plays a dangerous game between The Red Army and The White Army to find her family and free them. But when four men from both sides recognize her, she fears that she’ll never be able to save her family. Or even herself. The Russian Civil War is tearing apart her homeland. And these men are determined to rip her to pieces along with it. Are they friends or foes? Can Anastasia trust them to help her rescue her family in time or is this her dasvidaniya? Warning: This story is a reverse harem retelling of Anastasia and contains sexual content and language only suitable for readers 18+. Please note that this is not a historically accurate recounting of the actual woman, but does use factual dates pertaining to her and this time period.
Bestselling author M.J. Marstens mixes romance, suspense, comedy, and sassy characters who can say whatever they are thinking because it is just a story. When she is not creating steamy scenes or laugh-out-loud fiascos, she is refereeing her four children that she homeschools. In her free time, she loves to eat, sleep, and pray that her children do not turn out like the characters she writes about in her books.
I went into this not knowing what to expect. I've either loved or hated books from this author but as it was an RH retelling with Russian roots I was all for it, even if historically nothing like this would be possible. To start the author really tried to stay as historically accurate as possible. Normally I'd enjoy this but for me personally I did not like that in this book. I was not reading this for history facts and this is not a historical time I was familiar with so I felt a bit disconnected from that alone. Then she also threw in footnotes which just annoyed me and made for a distracting read. The heroine is a Russian princess at a time where her families rule is being threatened and lives are being lost. As just a princess and not the heir, the heroine is not super familiar with all the going ons in her country. It's blind luck she has a maid pose as her the night shit hits the fan and she's determined to start on a mission to save the lives of her family if at all possible. I did like the epilogue however and how the author used the timeline to show how their lives changed after leaving Russia and how long it took for the stage to be set for the heroines true identity to be revealed. This was a really good read but for me would have worked a lot better, more loosely based on this moment in history, it is a RH standalone after all.
If you leave aside the fact that very little about this story is historically accurate, then what you’ll find is a very good version of the Anastasia legend. I thought the story moved a little too quickly, especially the development of the relationships, but otherwise I thoroughly enjoyed the book.
This book is just so beautifully written. You can easily see MJ's passion for the subject and how much research she did to try to make it informative and historically accurate. She somehow simultaneously does this without bogging us down in unnecessary details and weaves a beautiful Reverse Harem fiction story. Each of the main characters are developed wonderfully. Usually in a harem of five, it takes me time to tell them apart and get a feel for their personality. But...that is not the case here. Each guy, and Anastasia herself, are written distinctly. There is also a M/M relationship within the harem and plenty of steamy action too. It is definitely a page turner with plot twists and an ending that you didn't expect.

I have always been fascinated with the historical account of the Grand Duchess and the enigma that followed all those years. To read a RH loosely based on this woman and watch her get her happy ending rather than what actually happened in real life was interesting and needless to say, I was super excited when this went up for pre-order.
Like I said above, this is loosely based on historical facts which is stated in the description of the book so no need for people to go through this with a fine tooth comb and point out inaccuracies because we all know they will be there. I do appreciate the author’s time and effort into creating this story with as much factual information as possible while still crafting her own story. The footnotes and the list of characters were things I greatly appreciated and put to use during my reading. I can tell the author has more than just basic knowledge about Anastasia and her family as well as the political war in Russia over the years.
I loved Anastasia’s happy ending. I wished I could have read a POV chapter from each of the men once they started their lives in Georgia. They all left behind their homes and I would have liked to hear how they adjusted to their new lives because I know some may have struggled more than others.
Let's start this off with me telling you that Anastasia is one of my all-time favorite princess movies to ever be made. Like, I like it way better than most Disney princesses. The story, the songs, the characters. EVERYTHING. This book is not like that. LOL. I've researched the Romanov family a little because of my obsession and this book follows more closely to factual, though there are significant changes.
With all that said, I enjoyed the book. There are a few things personal wise that I wasn't a fan of, but those didn't effect my review.
Anastasia is a strong-willed woman in this book and does what she thinks is in her best interests. And luckily, that demeanor is what allowed her to escape that fateful night her family was captured. But it isn't long until she realizes that things are far worse than she ever thought possible and help is something she needs to save her family.
Told from multiple points of view. We, of course, get Anastasia, but also those in her harem. Ilya. Vadim. Zavid. Maksim. Dmitiri. We also get some MMF scenes, so if that isn't you thing, be prepared. Then we get a time jump and a POV from future generations.
Overall, I enjoyed the book. It was a great spin on a classic tale. Would definitely recommend.
An engaging and fun read. I had a hard time putting down the book, I was so engrossed. It even managed to give me hope for a happy ending for the Romanovs, of all things.
My only complaint would be the absolutely random use of Russian words through the text. Why use the Russian word for “dress” once and then never again? It was a distracting detail that took me out of the scene more than once. I read it knowing these characters were speaking Russian, but then they go and make an English pun (stroking/stoking). It felt unnecessary, but that’s my one complaint about a book in which Anastasia Romanov hooks up with 5 guys including Rasputin’s son, ridiculous as it may sound.
I loved the book and I’m glad I read it. It’s one of those experiences that I know I will forever remember because it’s such an unexpected story to give the RH treatment, let alone with such respect and quality.
I will gladly check out all the other books in the series.
This book is so beautifully written. You can easily see the author's passion for the subject and how much research she did to try to make it informative and historically accurate. MJ Marstens does a great job of adapting the tragedy of the Grand Duchess Anastasia and the rumors that persisted after her death into a reverse harem novel. Anya is a lovely main character, and her men are both hot and varied. Each guy, and Anastasia herself, are written distinctly. There is also a M/M relationship within the harem and plenty of steamy action too. It is definitely a page turner with plot twists and an ending that you didn't expect.
Also, the book had easily the best epilogue I’ve ever read! Do yourself a favor and grab this story where history, legend, and fiction meet!
I absolutely loved this retelling of Anastasia with an RH twist. Mj did a great job incorporating our favorite taboos (RH, M/M, etc.). I giggled, I teared up, and rooted for them to win and save her family (even though I knew it wasn't going to happen). My only issue was how little she she got to spend with Dima and that's not even a real issue; I just wanted more Dima lol. I feel that I'm going to have a major book hangover after this story but 100% worth it
Just WOW This book is amazing! Specially is your into historical fiction/fantasy add in some RH. Everyone knows the story or knows the cartoon story of Anastasia. To finally read a good for adults on this story line. Loved it The story keeps to what is roughly known of the Russia revolution and what happened to the family. Love how the mix of love and betrayal is mixed in with the Red and White parties fighting for power. You see the story build and see how much research has gone into this. My ugly cry was when the family were so awful excused. Amazing story! Amazing author

As always MJ Marstens' stories leave me stunned with her creativity and unique style of writing. I loved all of it. I've always been fascinated by the story of Anastasia and this will forever be my favorite. My only complaint is that the book moves so fast paced, I was crying at the ending before I realized it! Thanks for writing thia story and putting in so much hard work with the research, language and customs of the time period. It was definitely worth it!
I have always loved the Romanov related history and have always wanted that Anastasia had really survived, I also like Rasputin and I read anything about him that I can put my hands into. This book presents the story in a way that is so believable and makes you want it to be the real story. The way the Tzars were killed to me scream murder. This book not only gives you a credible story but also creates a wonderful fairy tale and as always, the book is mighty hot!!!
Wow this book was phenominal! Anastasia has always been one of my favorite movies, but now after reading your potray of what really happened even though you did your own spin on it. I don't think I could watch it the same again, What really happened to Anastasia and her family is horrible and it didn't end in a happy ending and I'm not gonna lie I did cry a little, more so towards the ending. I could not put this book down definitely five stars from me
Oh, I loved it! I've learned so much truth and tragic history with this book but also the romance from the fiction side of things. It's angsty and tragic but also gives you what you need, a true happy ending...I think you'll be happily surprised with how it all works out. This author continues to impress me with her work.
This book was seriously hot. But also interesting with the way Marsten wove in real historical facts, or pointed out what was fiction and went on to tell you what really happened.
Anastasia, the 1997 film, was a favourite growing up and sparked my interest in Russian royalty. MJ does a beautiful job of weaving historical facts with scintillating fiction to create an engaging retelling with a reverse harem twist. Highly recommend!
I loved everything about this book. I love the Russian words used, the history lessons, and of course all the fiction added to the story. I loved the movie that came out in 97’ and how that was incorporated. Just overall such an amazing read.
This was an enchanting fictional re-telling of Anastasia 's story, I love how the characters seemed so real and the true history was littered into bits and pieces of the story! I'm a big fan of historical fiction, YA and RH, this was right up my alley!
I’ve always been been fascinated by Anastasia Romanov’s story, so of course I’m going to read an RH about her! I love her men and that she got the happy ending she deserved.
I loved this. Such a great way to tell this story. I have always been fascinated by Anastasia Romanov and the search for her. This was a great idea for her story.
