Nobody's prowlier than a cat-a sneak-a-peek cat, a hide-'n'-seek cat.How do you describe the most beloved pet in America? It would take a whole new dictionary of authentic and invented words to capture their essences. Watch out, Webster's! Award-winning author Susan Campbell Bartoletti does this by penning super silly yet always acute adjectives in this vibrantly illustrated read-aloud book. Children will get a kick out of the wordplay while a cat-and-mouse team leads them to the wonderful surprise ending.
Susan Campbell Bartoletti is an American writer of children's literature. She was born in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, but eventually the family ended up in a small town in northeastern Pennsylvania. Susan started as an English teacher and inspired many students before deciding to pursue writing in earnest. She sold her first short story in 1989. Three years later in 1992 she published her first picture book, Silver at Night. She held a rigid routine, awaking early in the morning in order to write before she left to teach. In 1997 she turned to writing full time. Susan has since returned to inspiring future writers. She teaches writing classes at a number of MA and MFA programs, among them Spalding University in Louisville, Kentucky, and Hollins University in Roanoke, Virginia. Additionally she leads workshops offered through the Highlights Foundation.
Social: The book talks about a nosey cat and at the end of the book it shows that they love their nosey lap cat.
Literary Elements: This book is a tongue twister and repeats the nosier cat phrase throughout the book.
Text & Pictures:I like the illustrations within the text but I don't like how the words are placed randomly throughout the pages. It makes the book a little hard for children to read because they will have to take the time to find the next word.
Adults and children alike will adore this tale of mischief from Susan Campbell Bartoletti. As they enjoy a story weaved through rich vocabulary and clever rhymes, children will be besotted with the nosiest cat around town. This wonderful tale brought even further to life by Beppe Giacobbe will be enjoyed by generations to come and should find a place in every home and classroom across America.
This colorful text moves and takes on a personality of its own as the book focuses on many different cat characteristics, from nosier to spookier and cosier to kookier. A tongue twister to read aloud.
I do not want to diminish Bartoletti's writing, which is sharp, fun and quick, but the illustrations in this book (by Italian-born and educated Beppe Giacobbe) are outstanding.
Cats have a lot of sides: nosy, dozy, cozy. They are tricky, licky, prowlers and growlers. The author uses poetic language to expound on the joys of owning a cat.
