Daffy Mrs. Toggle receives a phone call from the principal telling her that a new student was transferring into her class: a dinosaur! With the children, she sets about preparing for the imminent arrival - having the custodian make an extra-large desk, warning the school cook, visiting the library to research dinosaurs...

I thought it was rather cute. When reading it to DS#1, we had to stop in the middle and it was a great effort to prevent him from bolting off with the book to see how it ended.

However, when it ended... "THIS IS THE WORST BOOK EVER!" DS#1 was enraged about having been cheated, as

Me 3/5
DS#1: 1/5.. but maybe 3/5 when he got over the shock.

Update to add: this did get re-read occasionally, though not really in the main rotation, and was reasonably fondly remembered.

Mrs. Toggle is quite confused and concerned when the school principal tells her that her new student will be a dinosaur. The janitor brings in a standard student desk. She tells him that he needs to find something bigger to seat this student. The class goes to the library to research dinosaurs. A brontosaurus lifts itself off a page and follows the students to the cafeteria where Mrs. Toggle warns the cook of the new student's huge appetite. Then it goes back to their classroom with them. The students are having fun sliding down it's neck and tail, but Mrs. Toggle hasn't even noticed it. Just then the principal introduces her to a little blond-headed girl named Dinah Sawyer. Dinah is the new student. The other dinosaur evaporates. As Joey asks about the dinosaur, and Mrs. Toggle tells him she was mistaken, the janitor wheels a very large desk down the hall.

Mrs. Toggle is getting a new student and it is a dinosaur! Mrs. Toggle and her class venture around the school making sure all the necessary people know there's a dinosaur coming to school. When they stop by the library, a dinosaur jumps off the page of the book and follows the students back into the room. I really enjoyed how the illustrator had the dinosaur climb out of a book and follow the students back to class. This book is a fun read for the class. You could start a discussion about how they students felt on the first day of school and maybe how you , the teacher felt. I would have this book out in the classroom library. I would use this book in a guided reading group. I would recommend this book for a classroom library or a book to keep at home and read.

Mrs. Toggle learns that her class is getting a new student...a dinosaur. She and her class talk about what it will be like and go to the library to learn more about dinosaurs. Are they in for a surprise! This is a fun book to read aloud and it is good for starting a discussion about listening closely and asking questions if you don't understand. I also like that they used the library for research.

It's always fun to re-read a picture book and this one is no exception. This is beautifully illustrated by Rhode Islander R.W. Alley and at the time this was published, he lived in the same town so we ended up getting a few books autographed by him. Now he is collaborating on books with his wife which is really neat.

I love this book! It is one of my all time favorites. "I will tell you one thing I insist on. If I say something that doesn't make sense, ask questions. IF you don't udnerstand me the first time, ask me to repeat." The story line happens everyday. Something someone says is heard wrong or misconstrued. The class scrambles to accomodate their new "dinosaur" student by researching in the library. Great to introduce for listening and the importance of research.

Mrs. Toggle is apprehensive when the principal tells her she will have a new student — a dinosaur. But she tries to get things ready for the new student anyway. She even takes her students to the library to find out about dinosaurs. Is there really going to be a dinosaur in their class or is it all a misunderstanding?

I think the new student's name should have been spelled "Dinah," because I think of "Dina" as rhyming with "Gina."
