While Brion has discovered his true identity and survived the plots to kill him, his Carpentini mother he thought long dead has been driven into hiding and Brion and Finola venture into the heathland to find her. When they discover that the Dunkeldi king has outlawed the Carpentini and Salassani and is hunting them to extinction, Brion and Finola race to find his mother before it is too late. They soon realize that they are embroiled in a war for the heathland and for the heart and soul of its people. The Bracari besiege the desperate remnant of the Carpentini and Salassani in their last refuge in the Aveen Mountains. Meanwhile, King Emyr makes a reckless gamble to unite the entire island under his rule. Now Brion must decide between saving his mother and his wife or saving King Emyr and the whole of the Frei-Ock Isle from chaos and bloodshed. If he chooses wrong, he may lose everything and everyone he cares about.
James is a twenty-nine-year-old stuck in an older man’s body. He loves to paddle his canoe, shoot his handmade longbows in the woods, make knives, study martial arts, and generally enjoys challenging himself. When not teaching or writing about the real past, he is imagining worlds and histories that might have been, should have been, or may yet be.
James has two homes (though only one house)--the mountains of Idaho and the forests of New England--where he canoes, hikes, camps, rock climbs, and shoots the longbows he makes himself. He lives in Massachusetts with his wife.
James is a professional historian whose published works include two histories of the Inquisition, a documentary history of Columbus's first voyage, a transcription of a colonial era account book from Weymouth, Massachusetts, and a global history of piracy. This means that he is a professional teller of stories, both real and imagined.
James's favorite author is J.R.R. Tolkien, though he will never be able to watch the Peter Jackson Hobbit films again. The first viewing nearly gave him a fit. He loves The Giver and The Book Thief. He has read all the Hunger Games novels, but thinks Katniss should have ended up with Gale. (Sorry Peeta fans.) He enjoys Harry Potter and thinks magic should be real--so long as he owns the Elder Wand.
I love the new editions to the party! After the second book I was wondering if Elliot was going to introduce new characters or not.... Because there weren't many left from the original party (yes I'm still salty).
York is such a doll! He was a great edition. He's practically Brion from the first book just with a piece of crap mother. I absolutely HATED her and don't feel bad for how it ended with her.
Gwyneth drove me nuts. I didn't care for her and her man hating but I understand with her background and experience that she came by it honestly. I was pleasantly surprised with how her character grew and and so she became tolerable.
"A warrior uses the weapon that suits his purposes," Brion said. "Let other people underestimate you, but don't ever undervalue yourself."- Brion
"You have to use your head. You have to be smarter, more devious, and more cunning than your enemies. If all you can do is wield a sword or shoot a bow, you'll eventually meet someone who is better than you, and you'll die. It's as simple as that."-Brion
The men had been stripped and mutilated. Their green tunics and brown trousers had been cut to ribbons. Their square-toed boots were tossed about amid a pile of their leg wrappings. Brion grimaced as he surveyed the scene. Chunks of flesh had been cut from them in the most brutal manner.
What kind of psycho people are the Carpentini? At least this specific female carpentini and her child *shudders*
Brion pursed his lips. "I think Emyr would tell you that he had to die before peace would come to the heathland," he said. "But I have to tell you that I think you're either one of the bravest men I've ever known or you're completely insane." ...... Oh sweet Brion. You keep calling everyone else insane and/or crazy and yet have failed to realize that you're the craziest of the bunch!
"That's either brave or crazy. And it's a little stupid."
Honestly that last quote sums up what Brion's life has been since the day he came home to find his home ransacked and his parents dead.... And oh how it has been a thrilling ride!!!
OMG This series is FIRE! So many twists and turns I don't know where to begin. For starters, I highly recommend this series. There is romance, mystery, suspense, murder and it's set in the olden time! Could I ask for more?????? I really wished I would have found this series earlier I even like it better then Harry Potter (I am a Harry Potter fan). I love the twists and turns in this book series. It is now my favorite! It's easy to focus on and I feel like I am there as the story takes place. If you're having trouble focusing on another book, I suggest this series.
Three books in, this story included some different dynamics that kept me guessing and broke the monotony of being on the run that I had begun to feel with the first two books. I have thoroughly enjoyed the journey so far. There were very horrible (yet all too common in medieval history) scenes of war, so beware if you are considering allowing your younger child to read this book in the series.
I have enjoyed reading this entire series. It's a good, light read and generally moves quickly. The author's writing has progressed along with the series, as with most newer authors, and the third book is definitely the most well-written. The characters and story line are fun and interesting, though, as with many authors I read, the teen-aged characters are annoying and a bit obsessive. Overall, I really enjoyed this book and I would like to see more from this author, and so I am giving it four stars.
I enjoyed this, the action scenes were wonderful and everything was setup nicely to keep going with the story line and characters. The only bummer, and this has happened in all of the stories so far, is that there are words missing, words out of place, some duplication of thoughts in the sentences. I find it pulls me out of the story when I encounter one of these, as I puzzle over some hidden meaning, and then realize it is just an uncaught mistake. It seems to become more frequent towards the end of the story, so maybe the proof reader is tired of reading it and misses some, or edits are made quickly messing things up. Hay, I am a programmer, I know this well. Great story though, loved it, onto the next one.
Archer of the Heathland: Vengeance by J.W. Elliotis a wonderful story to read. This is the third book in the series and I am so glad I was able to read this story. It has wonderful strong characters and a wonderful story line.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
Life is about to change for them as they learn their mother is alive and hiding. The king wants all his family line dead and war is becoming more likely. Soon a choice will have to be made. Where will that lead them all? Can they save the ones they love or will war come before they can?See what happens

Very well-written. Love the development of the characters. I will anxiously await the next book. The only negative I have is the frequency of the descriptions of the stench of human waste- probably mentioned 2 dozen times. I read all 3 books in one weekend. Terrific series.
The whole series was very good. I read them straight through in one day. I would like to see more of your work and will recommend you to friend of mine.
I really liked the charcters and the story line. The emotions and understanding and perceptiveness inner conflict was very real. Thanks again for these works.
Very good books with interesting plots, great characters- both protagonists and antagonists. The stories keep you interested, the characters keep you connected, and the series flows from one book to another while keeping you interested without feeling cheated. Definitely worth the time and money.
I very much enjoyed this book. What I found especially enjoyable was the addition of York and Gweneth, and the way they grew and learned throughout the book. The way they interacted with Brion and Finola was also entertaining. Definitely a worthwhile read.
I really enjoyed the entire series and highly recommend this book to all who enjoy a great adventure. The vivid descriptions of the scenery and action scenes are an added treat!
A well written story that will hold your interest.
This series just keeps getting better and better. These people just keep getting into and out of more scraps than normal people in any other series that I have read.
I have now read three books of this series. Being a fairly voracious reader I can honestly say that unlike most series I have read these stories by Elliot get better with each new book!!!!
Relatable characters that draw you into their world. You feel right there with them and part of what is happening. It takes you back in time and I enjoyed this book very much.
I enjoy the well developed characters in this series as well as the involved story lines. If you like the Ranger Apprentice books you will enjoy the Archer of the Heathland series. A fun read!
This book is one of my favorite reads. You'll feel like you are there, in the battle, in the secrets, in the hunger, in the cold, in the fear and love.
Another great book in the series which continues with the characters in some more intense scenes. When the different clans need to come together to fight against the Bracari and Triston all things don't turn out the way it should. Friendships will be built, and some will be lost. Book was greatly written and a real page turner.
