Part of the “I Thought I Saw a…” series, the Penguin volume is not as engaging as the Lion version but still does its job. Each spread follows the same pattern: the narrator says, “I thought I saw a penguin. Is it…?” and asks the reader about a location on the page. The reader uses a circular portion of the flaps to move the pieces around as indicated by arrows on the circle; the tabs are moderately easy to manipulate and may be difficult for anyone under age 2. The digital illustrations are colorful and amusing, depicting the penguin in silly situations. An optional purchase for collections serving babies and toddlers.

Past the slide and peek, there really isn’t a story. The slides move easily, and the pictures are cute.
