About the author

Barbara Wood was born on 30 January 1947 in Warrington, Lancashire, England, UK. Together with her parents and older brother, she immigrated to the United States. She grew up in Southern California and attended Los Angeles Schools. After High School, Barbara attended the University of California at Santa Barbara but left to train as a surgical technician. During this time, Barbara held numerous jobs, before she sold her first novel in 1976. A few years prior, Barbara met her husband George. To date, Barbara has written 22 books, including two under the pen name Kathryn Harvey, these books are quite different from the Barbara Wood's novels and she, her agent and editor agreed that a pen name would serve to indicate the difference. She is an international best selling author with books translated into over 30 languages. The reader is transported to exotic countries that Barbara has meticulously researched to provide her fans with a true sense of the culture and history relevant to each story. At the heart of every book, is a strong, independent woman. Currently, Barbara is busy working on her next story that will, no doubt, showcase an extraordinary heroine in an exciting and intriguing adventure.

Este libro me tenía con todos los nervios de punta.... yo esperaba taaannnnto de ese final...
y... no pasó nada...
La autora me creó demasiadas expectativas con ese tema quemante, de un embarazo virginal con delirios religiosos...
Yo creí que....
y luego pensé que...
y al final... no fue nada :/

Debo decir que no por nada este es uno de mis libros favoritos, pero no exactamente por la historia, pues no soy muuuuy fan de la religión. Todos los elementos que Barbara Wood nos da en esta obra son sencillamente irremplazables y en conjunto, el resultado es simplemente maravilloso.

Comenzando por la familia de la protagonista, pienso que fue una muy buena idea darle ese toque de prejuicios y pensamiento anticuado al que es sometida a lo largo de la trama, que hasta cierto punto me hizo sentir identificada (por la educación con la que crecí vivienda con mi abuela) pero cuya ideología no comparto. Leer la forma en la que se juzgan las acciones te hace cuestionar el desarrollo que tiene Mary, pero al mismo tiempo ponerte en su lugar.
Cosas como tenerla de ejemplo por ser la hermana mayor, ser la única con una relación (tiene novio), ser la primera en recibir cierta educación, haber tenido la confianza de sus padres para todo… Son puntos no a su favor que la sumergen en un estrés psicológico que, tomando en cuenta la edad que tiene, le exigen madures y sensatez de la que carece.

Con respecto a los personajes secundarios, no por ser secundarios su participación en menos interesante. Mencionando algunos, tenemos a los padres avergonzados y arrepentidos, al novio confundido (pues nunca ha hecho nada con ella, pero lo presumía con todos), y (mi favorito) el doctor que se niega a pensar que un santo la está utilizando como “segunda María” y la embarazó por medio de un sueño.

Más allá de la trama, tenemos toda una encrucijada entre la religión y la lógica científica que nos hace elegir un bando por medio de las explicaciones, ejemplos y argumentos.

Die 17 jährige streng katholische Mary Ann wird schwanger obwohl sie noch nie mit einem Jungen geschlafen hat.
Für ihre Familie und ihr Umfeld ist das unerhört - zudem spielt die Geschichte im prüden Amerika der sechziger Jahre.

Das Thema das hier behandelt wird ist die Jungfernzeugung wo also eine Frau ohne Zutun eines Mannes durch chemische oder pysiologische Umstände schwanger werden kann und somit ein Kind zur Welt bringt.

Mary Ann beteuert die ganze Zeit dass sie sich nicht versündigt hat und keinen Sex hatte - auch wenn ihr das ausser ihrem Arzt niemand glaubt.

Ich fand das Buch wirklich eher lahm und auch die Geschichte klingt für mich äusserst unglaubwürdig. Was ich gut dargestellt finde, sind die biederen und starren Ansichten der Menschen in Bezug auf Sexualität, Freiheit, Individualität und Religion zu dieser Zeit. Das zeigt uns doch schon sehr deutlich wieviel mehr Freiheit wir heute haben und um wieviel die Gesellschaft sich schon weiterentwickelt hat.

Dennoch konnte mich dieses Buch nicht wirklich begeistert oder fesseln.

Barbara no me decepciona, es una de mis favoritas. Concuerdo con la crítica en que logra una narración escrupulosa. Esta es una novela curiosa que hace que te plantees muchas preguntas y el componente de la fe es muy importante al ser el centro de la vida de la protagonista. Lo que más me gusta de ella es que con ella siempre aprendo de temas bien reales... aunque en ocasiones parezcan insólitos (como en este caso).

Una chica de 17 años de familia muy católica, tiene un sueño impuro con San Sebastián, de ese modo, queda encinta en estado virginal y nadie le cree, ni su novio, del cual todos dudan. Mary lo asegura continuamente y dice que es un caso más como el de la Virgen María, su médico se dedica a hacer investigaciones y cree en ella porque existe una remotísima posibilidad científica como la partenogénesis.
He leído a la autora en otras novelas, pero en esta me he sentido un tanto decepcionada, no es el mejor libro de ella, la trama me pareció repetitiva, a veces amena, otras aburrida y me quedaron un par de tramos sueltos.

Me encanta esta escritora por su forma de escribir y transmitir conocimientos médicos a través de una historia. No obstante, de todos los libros que me he leído suyos este es el que menos me ha gustado debido a que le ha faltado incluir más emoción a la historia o el misterio que te haga querer seguir leyendo. Está bien para entretenerte y poco más.

I really liked this book! I would give it a 3 1/2. But Goodreads doesn’t allow for halves. It was very interesting, easy to get into and a page turner. Good character development and well written. I’m gonna continue to read more by Barbara Wood. I read her when I was much younger and I can understand why I enjoyed her as an author.

Ya he leído otros libros de la autora, pero este me dejó con mucha dudas, quizás hubiera sido un libro más largo. Hubieron situaciones que no se explicaron como terminaron. Para mi fue inconclusa y hasta en un punto me decepcionó por que la trama era muy buena y hacer del libro uno MUY BUENO.

Jest to jednocześnie bardzo dziwna ale i BARDZO, BARDZO, BARDZO intrygująca książka.

Druga w kolejce książka Barbary Wood z pewnością nie jest dziełem wybitnym. Chodzi mi o to, że autorka temat ważny potraktowała po macoszemu. Spodziewałam się, że chociaż pod koniec w słowach od pisarki dowiem się czegoś więcej, a jedyne, co dostałam to „Partenogeneza jest faktem”. Rozczarowało mnie to w znaczny sposób.
W 1963 r. siedemnastoletnia Mary McFarald zachodzi w ciążę. Wszyscy są przekonani, że po prostu dziewczyna uprawiała seks ze swoim chłopakiem. Nastolatka wszystkiemu zaprzecz i broni swojego dziewictwa z największą gorliwością. Początkowo autorka sama nie wiedziała chyba jak dokładnie chce przedstawić Mary. Najpierw mamy mdłą dziewczynę, która jest przykładną katoliczką i przede wszystkim bardzo wierzącą (wcale nie uważam tego za minus), by za kilka stron mieć uwielbianą w klasie dziewczynę i pisarka sama zaprzecza temu, co wyskrobała wcześniej. Mimo wszystko czytelnik lubi Mary. Jest w niej coś ujmującego. Oczywiste jest to, że nikt dziewczynie nie wierzy. Jednak dopiero doktor, Jonas Wade postanawia głębiej zbadać sprawę i dochodzi do zaskakującego odkrycia! Dziewczyna jest w ciąży partenogenicznej, czyli jest dzieworódką.
Dalej nie będę całej fabuły zdradzać. Jednak fakt jest taki, że jest to książka dla osób, które umieją odróżnić fikcję literacką od świata rzeczywistego i umieją przede wszystkim podejść do niej krytycznie. Dla osób bardzo wierzących będzie ona pewnym szokiem, bo stawia pod znak zapytania dogmat wiary związany z Maryją. Próbowałam wyczytać coś w Internecie na ten temat, ale odnośnie tego tematu wśród ludzi jest dość ciężko, więc uznałam, że autorka podciągnęła to pod człowieka i dostosowała. Jakoś nie przekonują mnie jej tezy. Zbyt mało dowodów, a same domniemania.
Co mnie jeszcze zbulwersowało to fakt, że nastoletnia matka pije wino i prowadzi po alkoholu samochód. Nie wiem, jakie jest prawo w Stanach Zjednoczonych, ale chyba wypadłoby dać przyganę, chociaż w narracji, co do zachowania dziewczyny! Przecież alkohol nawet w najmniejszych ilościach szkodzi dziecku! A pani Wood podeszła do tego tematu z taką lekkością jakby to była dodatkowa kostka czekolady. Nie! Nie! I jeszcze raz nie!
Co do pozostałych postaci to są one dość dziwnie skonstruowane. Mamy rodziców dziewczyny, którzy żyją w dość dziwnym związku, a to wszystko z powodu zbyt rygorystycznego wychowania matki Mary, która cały czas żyła w przekonaniu, że podczas zbliżenia kobiety i mężczyzny ta pierwsza nie może odczuwać nawet najmniejszej przyjemności. Każda z tych postaci jest na swój sposób różna i wychowana inaczej jak na czasy, w których żyją i dają oni bardzo zróżnicowane społeczeństwo żyjące w jednym mieście. Jak dla mnie negatywną postacią, aż nadto był ksiądz Crispin. Wszystko, dlatego, że spotkałam na swojej drodze wielu duchownych i do wielu przekonałam się nawet, bo byli ludźmi, którzy rozumieli tzw. „człowiecze” problemy i nie przekładali Boga nad wszystko. Mogłam z nimi porozmawiać i czułam się rozumiana, ale tacy fanatyczni kapłani jak ten w książce zdecydowanie mnie odrzucają.
Recenzja nie jest w żaden sposób krytyką Kościoła, bo daleko mi do tego. Każdy z nas ma prawo mieć swoje zdanie i wygłaszać je o ile robi to w sposób kulturalny i bez obrażania innych. Dla mnie ta książka jest słaba, chociaż czytało się ją bardzo szybko. Temat opowiedziany pobieżnie, bez szczegółowych dowodów. Rozczarowałam się, bo mimo wszystko, po „Szamance z nawiedzonego kanionu” spodziewałam się znacznie więcej. Jeśli kiedyś jakakolwiek książka tej autorki wpadnie mi w ręce z miłą chęcią ją przeczytam, by przekonać się czy to był tylko chwilowy kryzys pisarki.

Auf der Rückseite des Buchs steht, dass es um ein Mädchen geht, das nicht mit ihrem Freund schläft und trotzdem schwanger wird.
Ich habe nun 40 Seiten gelesen und genau das ist bisher passiert. Sie ist schwanger, die Mutti ist sauer. Soweit so gut. Unterhaltsam oder spannend war das bisher nicht.

Die Protagonisten sind attraktiv und intelligent. Sowieso sind alles lauter nette, angepasste Leute ohne Ecken und Kanten in diesem Buch. Glatt und langweilig. Warum sollten sie mich interessieren? Sie und ihr alltägliches kleines Leben?
Das einzige, was milde interesssant ist, ist die Frage, wie die Jungfrau zum Kinde kam. Aber so interessant ist es auch wieder nicht. Drum habe ich abgebrochen.

De manera habitual en sus relatos Barbara Wood nos lleva de la mano en una aventura basada en hechos cientificos como la partenogenesis, en esta historia toma recovecos en los cuales se pone en tela de juicio la fé, creencias y valores, para terminar con una bella historia de amor, muy diferente a las que se pueden leer en otros relatos. Excelente trama y desarrollo.

This is a story that takes in the issue of parthenogenesis, virgin birth. This is a possibility in one in one million, six hundred thousand births. Girls get pregnant although she knows she is a virgin. The Catholic Church is involved. Very good.
