A very talented research focusing on the basic frame of Qing Empire's political culture. Significantly, the author does not confine his narrative into the binary "Manchu-Han" zero-sum puzzle, but develop the argument as a more complex and efficient way, combining ethnicity and the desire for loyalty to the state itself. Those what seems "manchu" in the past, as the authors figures, should be considered not only in an ethnic view, but also as a symbol of "martial", "authentic" (zhi), and "real", against the Jiangnan "luxury". Such a mixture of political culture and historical re-writing could be seen as a preview of military-feed state in 20th century China.
