46 books6 followersHorst Bieneck is best known for his “Gleiwitz cycle” of four novels about his native Silesia (Poland) “The First Polka” (1975), “September Light” (1977), “Time Without Bells” (1979) and “Earth and Fire” (1982). As a young man he was imprisoned in a Siberian labor camp until 1955, and his first novel “The Cell” (1968) describes his experiences there as a political prisoner. Later he worked in the media in West Germany while writing novels. He was the winner of the Nellie Sachs Prize, the Bremen Literature Prize and the William Raabe Prize.

Horst Bienek war für mich bis zur Lektüre dieses Buches eigentlich nicht viel mehr als ein Name, ein Schriftsteller aus den 70er Jahren, der mich aus irgendeinem Grund an Alfred Biolek erinnerte. Gelesen hatte ich bislang noch nie etwas von ihm und hätte es nicht vor einer Weile eine Aktion auf Facebook gegeben, bei der man 10 Bücher nennen sollte, die einen im Leben sehr beeinflusst haben und eine gute Freundin “Die Zelle” in diesem Zusammenhang nannte – es könnte gut sein, dass er komplett an mir vorbeigegangen wäre.
