The voice of an angel!

Lady Gwendoline has lived with her Aunt Leah and Uncle Albert in Gelling since being orphaned as a child, but her aunt has always demeaned her and treated her as a servant even though she was the sister to Gwendoline’s mother. Her uncle and her cousin Fiona would treat her as the family she is if it weren’t for her Aunt’s venomous nature. Now, four years later, Lady Gwendoline is traveling to London for her first season, and Fiona’s fourth, but her aunt is determined that she will not enjoy it. If she did not have her music to comfort her life would have been unbearable.

Arthur Ainsworth, the Marquess of Highvale, has cut short his Grand Tour and returned to England upon receiving word of his father’s grave illness. When his father voices his wish to see him married before he dies, Arthur cannot refuse but finding a young woman of the ton that he can stomach marrying is a challenge until he hears the voice of an angel singing The White Rose at Lord Pevcolt’s masquerade ball. He hopes to discover her identity at midnight when the masks fall but like Cinderella, she has disappeared.

To say more would spoil the surprise. The plot is a tangled web of deception with a happy ending. If you like clean historical romances, you will love this one.

This full-length, very long Cinderella-like story (with a lovely cover) involves an orphaned young lady who comes to live with her very evil aunt, the aunt's decent husband and compatible cousin. Repetitive abuse in which this beautiful young woman with an angelic voice endures related to extreme jealousy continues for four years until she meets an old friend of her deceased brother by chance. Continuous extreme trickery to destroy her in favor of her own daughter is employed by the aunt. Somewhat fantastical, repetitive plot within involving confrontation, redemption, and forgiveness that becomes somewhat redundant. Dialogue a bit stilted and preachy with a sad overtone that Gwen lacked the ability to stand-up for herself for years. Double block paragraphs made it most difficult to read with ease, ending in a second epilogue directed elsewhere. Novel might better relate to a YA reader despite the underlying theme of docile dependence and acceptance rather than confronting one's issues and independently overcoming them.

Reviewed as a trilogy.

I really enjoyed reading this book. And all three of the stories were very different from the the other two. I especially liked the first book "A Night Rose".

Eleanor was the victim of vicious gossip and it really seemed to come out of nowhere. Reading how she decided to rejoin London and dealing with the lies still being whispered about her being a curse to the people in her life. Time for a hero to enter, which comes in the form of Charles Duncan, Duke of Finchester. Romantic.

I received a ARC of this e-book to read and write an honest review. I also purchased a digital copy of the published book when it became available on Amazon.

This book read truer to the period than the first one did. I really liked the main characters, but the wicked Aunt was so repeatedly treacherous as to be unbelievable. She was truly not right in the head.
It was too much villainy to suit me, Cinderella story or not. I do like the nobility of those who were able to forgive, in spite of terrible hurt and betrayal.
As with the first book, this one needed more discerning editing and more thorough proofreading. Things like that bother me and diminish the pleasure.

Some people will stop at nothing to destroy someone else’s happiness. This book will keep you wondering what Aunt Leah will come up with next....and let me tell you, she will surprise you! Gwendoline and Aurthur are adorable together. Their emotional struggles are palpable and you will find yourself rooting for their happy ending. As always with this author, this story is well written and captivates you from beginning to end. Such a good book!

Another strong woman, especially for the regency era, from the pen of Fanny Finch. She has wonderful story line and well developed characters, both good and bad. You will find yourself feeling sorry and worrying about Gwendoline, hating Aunt Leah and cheering on, sometimes yelling at, Arthur/Lord Highvale. The book will compel you to keep reading, hoping for better days for Gwendoline.

Sweet Cinderella Story

I really liked this re-imagining of Cinderella. It was sweet and clean and the villain-ess was stunningly villainous! Well done!

This book had me hooded until the ending of how love can manage to overcome so many obstacles and prevail over hatred when given time to heal.

I was privileged to ARC review this and honestly it had me up at night reading it was that good. I have said before to get a 5 there have to be parts that make me laugh, cry, and stay on my mind even when I'm not reading the book. This did all that.

Gwendoline Hathaway, the daughter of the now deceased Marquess of Eastwell, at the age of 16 is thrust into the guardianship of her mother's bitter older sister Leah Cartridge after the accidental death of her parents and the earlier death of her brother Eric which left her the sole survivor of her immediate family. Gwen is taken into the household more as a companion to her cousin Fiona, upon whom Aunt Leah dotes. Aunt Leah makes the wicked stepmother in Cinderella look good! The bright spot in Gwen's life is that her Uncle Albert, the Earl of Gelling, and her cousin, Fiona, as well as the household servants all like Gwen and only shrink back from her when Aunt Leah is around. (Oh for Child Protective Services back in those days!) Thus go four years until society forces Aunt Leah to take Gwen to London now with her own daughter for Gwen's first season - Leah can't put it off any longer with tales to those asking about Gwen that she is still mourning her parents. Leah wants her own daughter to marry well before Gwen has a chance at any suitor but with this being Fiona's fourth season as yet no marriage prospects Leah is forced to bring Gwen this year to her consternation. Leah makes sure her daughter has all the most fashionable and beautiful gowns while Gwen will have previous year hand-me-downs of Fiona's (I have not mentioned Fiona is a bit taller and of a different build than Gwen so imagine the fit!). Leah has given Gwen strict instructions she is to highlight Fiona and stay out of her cousin's "way" or else! This season is for Fiona! Uncle Albert tries to soften Leah's harshness what he can without causing all-out war with his wife - keep the peace at all costs seems to be his motto.

Leah drills into Gwen that her parents left extensive debts that Albert and she have paid off; she owes everything to her Aunt and Uncle! Gwen is NOTHING! Fiona at times tries to stick up for her cousin but no one seems to be able to get the woman to back down - not even her husband the few times he tries.

Enter Arthur Ainsworth, Marquess of Highvale, heir to his father the Duke of Headley. He has been called off of his Grand Tour with the news from home that his father is gravely ill. Talking with his mother and doctors they are perplexed as to what is causing his condition. Feeling he may be on his deathbed the Duke begs his son to find a wife that he may have final peace knowing the dukedom will have stability in his family. Arthur only to please his father so promises.

Her first ball, a masquerade, Leah sticks Gwen with a plain hand-me-down blue dress and ugly mask while dressing Fiona like a princess. Lord Pevcolt, the host, knows the family and is quite pleased to finally see Gwen as he knew her parents. Even behind that hideous mask Lord Pevcolt says he recognizes her mother's beauty in Gwen and asks if Gwen also has her mother's beautiful singing voice. Uncle Albert actually speaks up that oh yes she does and it works out that later in the evening Gwen is brought out to sing as the mysterious Nightingale and brings the house down with her singing - a ballad about a white rose. She especially catches the eye of Arthur as the particular song she sings touches his heart and he must meet her. Leah scolds Gwen for drawing attention away from HER daughter and sends her out to the garden - alone! Which is where Arthur eventually finds her; they sit and talk for quite a while, not giving away who each is as masks will be taken off at midnight. But alas Leah spotted them and whisks Gwen off before midnight.

Leah punishes Gwen by restricting her from going to any more balls. Ah but wait... her comes Fiona... she and her father, unbeknown to Aunt Leah, have bought the loveliest gown for Gwen to wear tonight to the ball that Gwen WILL be going to WITH Fiona AND Uncle Albert... oh AND Aunt Leah! But when they get there Aunt Leah demands she stay outside and think on what a wretch she is! She wanders off and sings her sadness but out there also is Arthur who having thought the singing familiar, not only when the Nightingale sang, but now also comes upon her and together they realize Arthur is Gwen's brother Eric's best friend from home that she grew up with and had been looking for her when he found out her parents had died! He had gotten to the house too late - she had already left. The reunion is bittersweet but they are no longer children but grown and feelings between them are no longer those of children.

Arthur and Gwen's relationship develops sweetly - she has a protector now - and we find out why Aunt Leah has been treating Gwen as she has. Hopefully I've given enough to draw you into the story - it really is worth the read. It has a really HEA ending and believe it or not how to forgive even the most unforgivable! Great book and a 5 all the way!

WOW... just WOW I was blown away by this story. Jealousy, disparaging, offensive, abusive, envious, resentful, revengeful, maliciousness, invidiousness, spitefulness, vexation, despised, loathed and hatred all are covered in this story. A loving, innocent, good hearted, kind, good tempered, independent, a distinct individual, estimable, deserving, worthy young girl who lost all her immediate family was taken in by her deceased mother's older sister who was a conniving, manipulative, plotting, cruel, malicious person. This story follows the life of Lady Gwendoline Hathaway. From the time she set foot into her aunt's house until her marriage. This is a heartbreaking story of an old grudge between Gwendoline's mother and her aunt Lady Leah Cartridge. Gwendoline never knew why she was made to suffer for years. She often wondered what sin had she committed against her aunt to receive such undeserving treatment. It was not until she was reunited with a childhood friend, Lord Arthur Ainsworth, the Marquess of Highvale and heir to the Duke of Headley that things looked hopeful for her. However, her happiness was not meant to be. She believed fate was cruel to her because there was a force trying to tear down her reputation so that Arthur would walk away from her. It not only happened once but several time her happiness was thwarted. Then the vengeance was directed to Arthur and he almost lost Gwendoline. But when she came to her senses, she realized that she needs her faith in Arthur to be strong so she could stand by his side to weather the scandal just as he had done for her. Aunt Leah was never contrite even faced with evidence of her harmful misdeeds. She put on a good performance of being ashamed, regretful, penitent, humbled sinner looking for forgiveness. The humiliation only fueled her to notch up her destructive machinations against Gwendoline and Arthur. Unknowingly Leah was alienating her only child, Fiona and her husband Albert, the Earl of Gelling. It was not until much, much later that Leah's entire reason for her behavior was revealed. Her daughter and husband shunned her. Would Leah ever find it in her soul to ask for absolution? Would Gwendoline, Arthur, Fiona and Albert ever be able to forgive Leah her transgressions? Will any of them find peace and happiness? This is a must read. You will not be disappointed.

A White Rose for the Marquess by Fanny Finch is the engaging story of Gwendoline Hathaway and Arthur Ainsworth, her brother's childhood friend. Gwen has suffered: first her brother died, and then both of her parents. She is sent to live with her aunt and uncle, penniless and alone. She is now twenty years old and has not yet seen her first season. Her Aunt Leah, for reasons known only to herself, will not allow Gwen to marry before her cousin, Fiona. Finally she is allowed to go to a ball, a masquerade ball, wearing an old dress of Fiona's and a hideous mask, but going. The ball is given by an old admirer of her mother's, Lord Henry Pevcolt. Lord Pevcolt invited her to sing, having known the lovely voice her mother had. Her's is just as lovely and entrances many, including Arthur, who then asks her to dance. Aunt Leah is furious, not only was Gwen the center of attention, but now she is dancing with one of England's most eligible bachelors. Leah is nothing if not creative in finding ways to keep these childhood friends apart.

Finch has woven a mesmerizing tale of jealousy and deceit, as well as forgiveness. Readers find themselves rooting for the young couple, all the while hardly believing things can be made right. She has done a fabulous job capturing the ton and its glee in gossip, the more damaging the better. Finch has also done a masterful job of showing loyalty in the most unexpected guises. This is a truly engaging novel from the beginning right through the epilogue. I totally enjoyed it and heartily recommend it. Enjoy!

Gwendoline had a wonderful life up until her parents were killed in a carriage accident. At sixteen, she went to live with her only relative, her mother's sister, Aunt Leah. Her parents had been wealthy and provided for her including a dowry but Aunt Leah told her she had nothing due to her parents' great debt.

Gwendoline was made to stay home during the season when her cousin, Fiona, went to balls and parties to find a husband. This went on for 4 yrs until in Fiona's 5th season, Gwen was allowed to accompany her in her old hand-me-down gowns with no jewelry to speak of.
It was a masquerade ball and while Fiona had a small mask, Gwen's nearly covered her entire face.

Aunt Leah was very cruel to her, felt burdened by Gwen, and made sure Gwen knew it. She still carried a great grudge against her sister and took it out on Gwen.

Gwen had made an impression on a very eligible man who needed to find a wife before his ill father passed on. After the dance, Aunt Leah was in a snit about it and they all left before the midnight unmasking. Arthur didn't know who she was. Will he ever find her again? Will Uncle Albert ever stand up to Leah on Gwen's behalf? Will all of Aunt Leah's secrets be found out? Why has Fiona not found a husband yet? Who was the woman with the baby?

This is a wonderful read. There are some twists and surprises but it all works out for a HEA ending. There is also an extended epilogue that takes up 20 yrs later; very sweet.

I received an ARC from the author and this is my voluntary review.

This is the story of Gwendoline & Arthur. Gwendoline lost her brother but remained friends with Arthur, her brother's best friiend. He always watched out for Gwendoline as she was growing up. Gwendoline loses her parents in a terrible accident. She is taken in by her Aunt Leah. There is plenty of money for Gwendoline and also a dowery but Leah tells her she has nothing and her father was deeply in debt. She says she and her husband have paid off the debt. She refuses to let the girl take part in the season for 4 years.
Arthur has been called home from his Grand Tour as his father is very ill. He wants Arthur to marry before he passes away.
Arthur and Gwendoline dance together at her first ball which is a masked ball. The unmasking is at midnight.
Gwendoline is asked by the host to sing as he knew her mother. She sings a song called The White Rose. Leah insists they leave before midnight. Will Arthur ever find out who he danced with? Will Gwendoline find out why Aunt Leah is so hateful to her. Will Uncle Albert and Fiona find out about all the tricks and rumors Aunt Leah played. Will Arthur and Gwendoline find happiness? Well thought out and well written. A must read! Get a copy and come along on this ride. You'll be glad you did!!

Gwendoline Hathaway is an orphan now since her family passed away. All alone and only one person left who is her guardian,Aunt Leah. They do not care for each other. Aunt Leah is a very envious and selfish person. Living with her will not be the same as Gwendoline was used to.
She is going to her first masquerade ball for the season in London, and she is so excited.
At the ball, the host asked Gwendoline to please sing. She inherited her mother's beautiful voice.
Aunt Leah is so upset, because Gwendoline took all the attention away from her daughter, Fiona.
While Gwendoline was singing Arthur Ainsworth heard this beautiful voice, and was mesmerized. He had to find out who this person is. Masks still in place, Arthur danced with Gwendoline all night ,but they never revealed themselves.
At midnight, Arthur never got to see or speak to Gwendoline, but he is now in pursuit of this beautiful nightingale. He must be married before the end of the season.
A delightful love story. Gwendoline struggles to survive and grieves of great loss. Deceitful and vicious lies can hurt anothers reputation.
The ton was made up of some ruthless people in this time. But love prevailed.

ONE EMENSELY ENJOYABLE TREAT!!!
WOW! One unbelievable take on Cinderella's unfortunate and abused fairytale. Fanny pulled out all the stops for this drama, suspense filled, moderm day thrills and spills. Fanny absolutely nailed all of the emotions spinning through this baby that leaves you reeling and wanting more. She propels this baby with refreshing realism it catapults this jewel to life effortlessly. Pushing forward with such perfection escalating this baby to staggering heights with this intensely compelling storyline and intertwined plot. Twixt and twined and stretched to unbelievable limits until you feel everything the characters feel. The personalities are well matched and brought together smoothly. The scenes are so graphically detailed it paints an incredible backdrop that feels so realistic it's like you're right there with them. Fantastic job Fanny, thanks for sharing this little gem with us.

A beautifully written love story. Gwendoline, orphaned, by a family tragedy, is taken to live with her aunt, uncle and cousin. Treated poorly and feeling lonely, she is finally allowed to travel with her family to have her "first season" in London. By happenstance she and Arthur have a chance encounter. Why do they seem so familiar to each other? Arthur's father is dying and has been instructed to marry soon. Can he find someone to love? Can Gwen overcome her Aunt's spiteful and hurtful actions, find a husband, and finally move away from her Aunt? A tenderhearted story, oftentimes reminding me of "Cinderella", but with several twists and turns of its own. Our h and H discover that "there is no love without trust." I highly recommend this clean regency romance! I received a complimentary copy and have voluntarily given my honest opinion.

Fanny Finch knows how to do “Clean & Sweet” Regency romance to perfection. That’s certainly the case with A White Rose for the Marquess (Regency Roses, Book 2), her latest delightful Regency period book. A perfect hero in Arthur Ainsworth, the Marquess of Highvale. A perfect heroine in Gwendoline Hathaway. A Cinderella-esque cruel aunt who has lowered her to being a servant. A masked ball. Fated love with an enemy to overcome. Yes indeed, all the boxes are resoundingly checked. But for the fact that I’m literally dictating this review to my husband from my hospital bed I could go on and on with praises. The book definitely deserves it. Since I can’t do that I will simply note that the book is most definitely one to read, and it is easy to highly recommend.

This was a sad, heartbreaking book. Gwendolyn loses her parents in a tragic accident and after losing her beloved brother years before she is forced to go live with her Aunt Leah. Because Gwen looks like her mother that her aunt was always jealous of she treats her horrible and lies to her about her parents wealth. After years of abuse she finally get to go to her first season where she meets her brother’s best friend. Her aunt does everything she can to break them up. She is truly evil. The characters are very descriptive. Gwen her self is very loving and forgiving more so than I would be with all the wickedness her aunt does to her. Thankfully we end up with a HEA! This was a good but heart wrenching book. I recommend it especially if u enjoy Cinderella type books.

Gwendoline lives with her Aunt and Uncle after her parents untimely death and her Aunt lets her know it is not her choice to have her there. She had bad blood with Gwendoline's mother and is bound to get her revenge on Gwendoline. After years Gwendoline is finally allowed to go to a masquerade ball but after singing for the host and everyone there her Aunt realizes that she is getting too much attention. Arthur is at the same ball attempting to find a bride before his father passes away. He is smitten with Gwendoline but her Aunt steps in at every turn. Can these two find a way around the blocks in their paths? Can they find their happily ever after? I voluntarily reviewed an advanced reader copy of this book.

This is the story of Arthur & Gwendoline. There are also chapters with other main characters. I really liked that a lot. Gwendoline had a happy life, until she didn't. She had been through four years of utter devastation and cruelty. Arthur lived a very good life. There was one great hiccup that took place, but that turned out okay. They unravel the revenge and cruelty that Gwendoline was subject to. I will give no spoilers. This book is too good to do that. You have to experience it for yourself. This book deserves a 10 if not higher. Fanny's books just get better and better with each one she writes.

She meets a man of high social stature at a masked ball. She sings a beautiful song and after they talk it is just waiting to unmask at midnight but her aunt whisks her out of there before that can happen. I am going to stop there as I don't want to give any spoilers. I would definitely read this story. I have nothing bad to say about it as I loved it. No more spoilers. Lies, secrets and treachery abound in this entertaining clean read. Gwendoline has endured a series of tragedy, loss and heartbreak. Beholden to a family member who treats her with discourtesy and malice. Arthur has promised his ill father that he will find a bride to put the man's mind at ease. While attending a ball Gwendoline's and Arthur's paths cross once more. Arthur is enchanted by the sister of his childhood friend's sister, but someone else's nefarious behaviour seeks to halt their happiness.

I enjoyed Gwendoline and Arthur's story. I could not believe how evil and manipulating Gwen's aunt is! Gwen is left alone after the tragic death of her parents. She had already lost her brother years ago. Her Aunt is her last remaining relative, and reluctantly takes her in. Unfortunately, she treats poor Gwen like an unwanted and neglected stepchild. Through it all, Gwen endures with dignity and grace. When she meets a wonderful man, will she have a chance of happiness? Or will her aunt put a stop to it all? Another wonderful clean and sweet regency romance by Fanny Finch!
