Before there were Derry Girls, there were the Derry Women. Who do you think gave birth to the girls?

With a foreword from Colin Quinn. When Ursula and Jed Barnett win the lottery in Derry, they think their troubles are over. But they've just begun. Ursula's sister-in-law Fionnuala Flood rallies the family against them. Why should the Barnetts live in luxury when the Floods are eking out a meager living? A hilarious, sad, insightful series about the politics of envy. A must-read for anyone from a dysfunctional family, and even from a functional one!
From the hilarious and heartbreaking bestseller An Embarrassment of Riches ("A masterpiece"--Colin Quinn) to the laugh-a-minute world tour of Fleeing The Jurisdiction, all your favorite characters from Derry, Northern Ireland are here: mother-from-hell Fionnuala Flood, kind but feisty Ursula Barnett, their husbands Paddy and Jed, and Fionnuala's children, Dymphna, Siofra and all the others. Wince, gasp, laugh at their adventures from the lottery win to the Titanic cruise, from the Semtex in the canned vegetables to the liaisons in the fish factory! The first three books of the beloved series are together in this classy box set.

I was expecting this book to be much funnier, instead I found it to be depressing. The characters are so horrible, it was like a train wreck you have to keep looking (or reading) in the hope that they do something redeeming, which happens far too rarely.

I really only have one thing to say about this. For the love of god and whatever you happen to hold as holy, when naming your characters, if you find that you have to include a pronunciation guide at the start of the book: change them.

I get that these characters are not American or British and that by way of cultural identity it’s tempting to slap some truly regional names on them, but I beg all the writers out there: don’t give into temptation. It’s possible to find pronounceable names in most cultures and still maintain that sense of identity. I really wanted to like this series. Other than the name thing, the writing was good, the plot interesting enough to hold my attention and actually quite funny, but by the time I was halfway through the first book I was so annoyed by having to back up to the pronunciation guide repeatedly (on an e-reader this is particularly obnoxious) that I stopped reading. My “Want to read” list is too long to waste time on something that is that annoying. Hard pass.

Same characters, satisfying closure to each book, Northern Ireland lingo

Even after many hours of reading these three books (over 20 according to Goodreads) It was nice the books didn’t end with cliffhangers. Dark humor, poverty, child abuse, family and relative misunderstandings, wonderful writing, and well-developed characters made this marathon reading experience memorable. I see there are more books with the same characters! I was sad for the children. Hilarious in parts. Book one introduces everyone involved, many legal troubles develop in book two, and book three’s great story takes place on a (failing) cruise ship.

Not to be missed!

You have to start with the first book of the series and continue straight on to fully appreciate these characters and the flow of their stories. To some degree, unless you are born with the proverbial silver spoon, we all know people who have some of each of these characters in them — God help us.

Now on to the next set. Can’t wait!!!

Love The Derry Women!

I loved all three of the books in this set. They are about a very dysfunctional Irish family. They are both funny and heartwarming. I had a hard time putting the books down. I can't wait to read more about the Flood family.

Oh, This is real laugh-out-loud &/or roll-your-eyes black humour. Loved every page, and will be getting into the next book straight away. Envy personified.

Highly recommended.

I stopped reading. I wanted to like these, but the characters were not likeable in the least. The dialect was difficult, but I could have gotten used to it. I wish I could have liked these.

I actually gave up on this book after a few chapters. It was supposed to be hilarious but I did not find it so. May give in another go in the future if I am desperate for something to read.
