The Devil Behind Us is the sequel to The Devil Between Us and definitely not a standalone. It picks up right where book 1 ended, and is just as exciting as that first book was (without the harrowing but necessary scene at the beginning). I had really liked Jennifer Nicole Stang’s narration of The Devil Between Us so going forward with a new narrator – even Elizabeth Saydah, whose narration of Eliza Andrews’ Princess of Dorsa I adored – was surprising and I needed to adjust to that. I wasn’t one hundred per cent convinced with the rhythm here but all in all, I enjoyed the narration anyway.
There’s so much happening in this book from the start, I won’t risk spoiling. All I’ll say is I love Jesse and Abby’s relationship, how much love and respect they have for each other. Sometimes I wish they were better at communicating and I really like how Abby calls Jesse out on that.
I also like the secondary characters a lot, especially Toby. Another one is special to me: Armand Baptiste, whom Jesse meets by chance. I’m partly responsible for the fact that his French rings true – or not, in which case I’m probably responsible too –, and finally getting to meet him was oddly moving (it was the first time I gave a hand to an author while the book was being written).
I hope I’ll find the time soon to read the third and final book in this trilogy, The Devil that Broke Us. I just have to know what will happen next. I’m really glad I read this book after the next one was released already (not the audiobook yet though), the cliffhanger would be hard to handle otherwise.

4.7 ⭐️ This series has gripped me from the get go. I binged the first book in 1 day, barely sleeping. The second installment is as gripping; I could totally believe the rags-to-riches transition of the MCs and it has been satisfying to read all about the progression of Jesse's and Abby's love story. The ending I didn't quiet enjoy, specially since I am not in the right headspace for the third book and am therefore not planning to read it. The author is good at writing raw emotions, specially grief and tragedy, as I inadvertently experienced in the first few chapters of book 1 (I eventually decided to skip some parts for my mental health. Lol). Although this is the end of the series for me, I do completely endorse the whole series to everyone. It's a master's work although this is the author's debut (which is mind blowing).

Strong second book in a series. The first was so hard to read but worth it for finishing. I was interested in what would happen to these characters. It continues right where the last one ended. It had been awhile since I read the first installment, so it took me a bit to remember everyone and everything. But once it all clicked, it was smooth sailing. Those days must've been so tough to live through. So much work just to survive. I can't believe how this ended. Now I HAVE to read book 3, if I want to feel any type of resolution, I guess.

Great sequel
I was glad to know there was a second book already in the works after reading"The Devil Between Us". I loved this book and was so happy to see everything progress for Jesse. This one ends on one shell of a cliff hanger so I hope we don't have to wait too long and I really hope things work out.

Oh wow... the surprises in this book are so fulfilling. The shocker at the end is what got to me the most. I’m happy to see there’s a third book in the series.

Not sure how to describe!
I thought the first book was good, but book two is even better. The storyline has me biting my nails for the next book. I hope is NOT long to find out Jesse path. If I could, I would give Burton a good whooping. He sounds like he is going to be a rotten man. Poor Aponti when she finds out and will probably come to hate Jesse and Abby. Again, hope it is NOT a long wait!!!!!

I love the story of Abby and Jesse! They face so much and continue to persevere. All the loss breaks my heart, but together they weather the storms and come out on the other side. They have so much love for one another. I’m so happy they have Toby and Aponi in their lives and the twins are adorable. The ending had me weeping. Jesse is in so much turmoil, but she I know she can’t just leave her family.

Jesse and Abby, forever in my heart
I was excited and surprised when I found out there was going to be a third installment in this wonderful, heartfelt, at times heartbreaking, love story. And when I say love story, I mean love of every aspect. Romantic love, friendship love, parent to a child love, and even love for a place called home. I decided to re-read the first book and finally read the sequel so I was fully prepared and caught up for the third book. Sometimes when people read a series they have to wait for months, sometimes years for the next or the next, next book, and when that book finally is released into the wild, the readers' memory has been muddled and they have to go back and refresh. Sometimes it's done begrudgingly because they just want to know what's going to happen next without the homework lesson. Well, if the author is any good then the reader won't have an issue re-reading, and SC Wilson definitely has a talent for holding the reader captive that the thought of going back to catch up doesn't even seem like a chore. I couldn't wait to dive back in the world of Jesse, Abby, Toby, and many more characters who joined in along the way in this energizing, heart stopping, pull-at-my-heart-strings, tale.
I was frightened yet excited for the new journey Jesse and Abby decided to take. At times I was petrified for them because their love seemed so fragile and I worried something would come between them. I rooted and continue to root Jesse and Abby on, but the way Wilson left it in the sequel, now has my heart palpitating. Damn you, Wilson ;) And don't get me started on that raging river. I have a fear of water and every single time they or one of them had to make that daunting trip across the rushing, white rapids, my breath was held until everyone made it safely across. Phew! Jesse was an honorable, hard-working, loyal, loving partner to Abby and their beautiful babies. She could do no wrong, even when she did get it wrong, she never once gave up. Abby's love and devotion for her family is what I believe kept Jesse pushing on, especially when times just weren't going their way. They had the kind of love that only people can dream of.

Fast ward they move from the mountain and taking Aponti and Toby that are now married to San Francisco with the help of Sam hospitality. Things are going lovely till Burton ruins the letter about the mountain. Jesse travels back towards the mountain and makes a very bad decision to change her life with the kids or her wife. Can wait for the third book.

Right, so, power read through the first one, just started this one..and..well...
It's the writing. I'm sorry. God, the writing is so bland and one dimensional, like an instruction manual. The story sounds like such a good idea, so amazing, but everything else - the characters, the setting, everythingggggg - is lackluster and lifeless.
I feel so bad, but I really did try, and maybe its just not for me right now.

This started like the next chapter from the last book. No re-explaining the previous book which I liked as I was reading it right after the first book. Written with understanding of the way life took place in the 1800's, not that we agree with the way women were treated. Left hanging for the next book !!! arruughh

Continuing from Book #1 in the series, “The Devil Between Us,” Book #2 “The Devil Behind Us” is filled with just as much action, adventure, and romance. Cannot wait to Start Book #3 in this series, “The Devil that Broke Us. Absolutely love this author, SC Wilson. Hope this entire series results in a movie or mini series.

3.5 ⭐️. I felt like the pacing was off at times and I feel like the end made the character development and growth Jesse had made, nonexistent. It didn’t make sense she would all of a sudden be like, “yeah my whole family is better off without me.”
But other than that, I enjoyed the book and have enjoyed the series!

I really liked this series until I got to to most stupid ending ever. I wish I could unread the whole thing and I sure won’t read the next one. I would not recommend this book ever.

Impressive sequel!!
This is a wonderful story masterfully well tell you cannot help but be absorbed by it. I love all the characters, the situations, the plot and every single detail of this beautiful story. Not so patiently waiting for the next installment!!

Wonderful story
I loved this second book as much as the first. I eagerly look forward to the third installment. Jesse and Abby and the supporting characters (Toby, Aponi, Jim, Gwen, Sam and the others) are wonderful getting to know. Loved everything about the story.

Rough cut for me
The writing is again wonderful with the complexity only growing of the characters. The end, I felt, was a rough cut off and I’m eager for book three to close the story in one way or the other. Definitely worth the read!

For the most part, less dramatic & epic than the first in the series. A beautiful slice-of-life read, until a truly unexpected cliff-hanging twist of an ending. A lovely story in a beautiful, immersive setting.

I'm loving that this isn't a cheesy fake lesbian romance. I am loving the characters and storylines. This was a 4.5 up until the end simply because the name Jim is driving me crazy since it's the 1800s. Dropped to four because I didn't care for the cliff hanger/ending leading to book 3.

A good sequel but definitely wished for a little more conflicts maybe, everything just seemed to work out well and the ending was rather quick and a bit abrupt but I still enjoyed it and will be reading the third.

If I could rip out the last few pages, I’d give it a 5. This MUST mean there’s a book 3 coming out. Otherwise, this is an utterly dismaying, out-of-character way to end the book.
