Check out these works of genius in the best selling Dev Haskell series; What Happens in Vegas..., Art Hound, The Office, Star Struck, and International Incident.
If you enjoy Carl Hiaasen, Janet Evanovich, or Laurence Shames, you're going to love Mike Faricy's Dev Haskell series.
Dev Haskell... A private investigator with a foot on both sides of the law. A back slapping, fun loving, ladies man, but best not to cross him. He's not always right. He's not going to save the world from terrorists. He won't protect the stock market from international manipulators. Dev Haskell deals in day to day problems and situations that result from people making bad decisions. But then, bad decisions make for interesting tales...
At the end of the day Dev gets the job done and there's usually a gorgeous woman who says, "Please, don't ever call me again. Ever!"

I was born in St. Paul, Minnesota, I still live there as well as in Dublin, Ireland. I've been a soldier, freelance journalist, tended bar, sold designer cakes, owned a painting and decorating company along with a number of other schemes and scams. If that doesn't offend you I also play bagpipes with the Brian Boru Irish Pipe Band. All my books stand alone, read them in whatever order you wish. They are filled with the sort of oddballs we are all curious about, but wisely, prefer to keep at a distance. None of my characters will be saving the world from terrorism, international banking conspiracies or coups to take over the government. Rather, they inhabit a world just below the surface of polite society, characters with one foot on either side of the law. The circumstances they find themselves in are usually due to bad decisions, but bad decisions lead to interesting stories. They serve not so much as an example but as a warning to us all. Thanks for taking the time, happy reading.
Book 15: What Happens in Vegas Dev's new girlfriend, Barbara Millicent Dahl, AKA Barbie Dahl (Doll) is probably the least likeable character in the series so far. So much so, that she detracts from the reading enjoyment I've come to expect from these books. Don't get me wrong, Mike Faricy's writing is just as good as always, but Barbie Dahl is so nerve-gratingly pink and plastic … think nails on a blackboard. Perhaps that is the point.
Juxtaposed to Barbie is Dev's long-time pal and army buddy Arthur "Goose" Gander. He is the instrument that gets our St. Paul PI on a plane to Las Vegas to see why his brother Kenny is being followed. Kenny is on the spectrum and brilliant with numbers. As part of the mystery, Tubby Gustafson and his right-hand man Fat Freddy Zimmerman seem to know what's going on with Dev before Dev does. Tubby and Fat Freddy are becoming quite the regulars in the series, much to Dev's dismay.
Into every life, some rain must fall. Barbie made some of the humor a bit sour, but I dare you to think about a guy named Goose Gander without cracking a smile. On balance, this may not have been my new favorite in the series, it definitely has its moments.
In order to best appreciate the trials and tribulations of Devlin Haskell, PI, you really should start with the first book and binge your way through the series. The womanizing, wise-cracking Haskell will keep you laughing and scratching your head in disbelief at the antics that follow him around like a golden retriever puppy.
Book 16: Art Hound Dev Haskell is maturing… I don't know if I would have made it this far in the series had he not. He's still footloose and fancy free when it comes to women, but Morton, his lovable golden retriever, seems to have had a somewhat grounding effect on Dev.
Dev gets a phone call and finds himself neck deep in the guest from hell. Demarcus Cantrell is an artist with a split personality… one day a masterpiece, the next a bit of splatter that a five-year old might accomplish. Dev's normally neat house is now a pile of canvases here and boxes of paint and other artistic accoutrements there. What's a guy to do? He's also working a case for the wife of Farrell Finley. She wants some pictures so she can give him what for. Just another day in the life of a private investigator.
Underlying all this is international art crime, a kidnapping, and a Parisian art consultant. How do all these things fit together? You'll have to read ART HOUND to find out.
When I need an escape from the realities that plague, I haul out the next book in the ongoing saga that is Devlin Haskell. I allow myself to get lost in Dev's world where I can laugh, and cry, and shake my head at the ever-growing cast of regulars. You really need to start this series at Book 1, RUSSIAN ROULETTE, and work your way through the assortment of babes and bad guys that make life so interesting in St. Paul, MN.
Book 17: The Office St. Paul's top man in the underworld, Tubby Gustafson 'persuades' Dev Haskell to take a case from a certain individual that will call on him the next day. What's a man to do after being strong armed? He takes the case but handles it in the opposite of what you might expect.
Meanwhile, in a total reversal of the norm, the St. Paul PD brings Dev on as a consultant that results in a hilarious comedy of errors. Lieutenant Aaron LaZelle, Dev's long-time friend, and Lieutenant Manning, his long-time nemesis, play the time-honored tune of the police department in need of more men and more money with the latter not in sight.
As I've read this series, I have noticed that the cover reflects a main point in the story. Be sure to note the cover art on this one!
To fully appreciate the lovable character that is Devlin Haskell, you really need to start at the beginning. I do recommend that you read RUSSIAN ROULETTE and binge your way through the series. You get to meet the new characters, some of whom become regulars, marvel at Dev's automotive horrors, and generally see the depth, or lack thereof, of our hero, Dev.
Book 18: Star Struck Dev has an old high school buddy who looks like somebody… that's somebody with a capital S. Said buddy wants Dev to pose as his security man at an impersonation gig. Dev has his reservations. Then there's the hottie from hell, also a high school classmate. Between the two, our favorite private investigator faces peril that includes the local mob and a couple of recent parolees that make dumb and dumber seem smart.
As always, mayhem ensues.
In STAR STRUCK, we learn a bit more about the St. Paul underworld run by Tubby Gustafson while Fat Freddy Zimmerman plays a dangerous game.
As I've said before (and I will surely say it again), to really appreciate the humor and havoc that is the Dev Haskell - Private Investigator series, you need to start at the beginning. Read RUSSIAN ROULETTE and work your way through all the books. They are short reads with a lot of bonus material included. You will forget about what's going on in this world in favor of what's happening in Dev's.
Book 19: International Incident At the 'request' of crime boss, Tubby Gustafson, Dev Haskell finds himself winging across the Atlantic to protect said crime boss's 'niece,' Maddie and her overly large suitcase. Of course, Dev finds himself seated with a behemoth that should book two seats.
I know, Dev in Paris? Hard to fathom!
For all the built in gags and laughs, Mike Faricy follows the rule of mystery writing that says no detail, however small, is extraneous to the plot. As the story moves along, some of those little things take on new importance as Dev and Maddie do some sightseeing and shopping while dark forces do their best to ruin everything.
Mysteries are hard to review without giving away the farm. My hope is to tantalize you, the book browser, into picking up this fun read for yourself. While you're at it, you should consider starting this series with book 1, RUSSIAN ROULETTE, curling up in your favorite reading spot, with your beverage of choice, and binging all the books.
Just terrible. words fail to adequately describe just how bad this is
Trite, ridiculous, 1 dimensional characters, total lack of a coherent plot, almost non existent continuity from one volume to another, and the most pathetic baddies in all of literature. And these are the good points !!!! Stupid evil henchmen, boring and repetitive "bad guy" scenes, a pathetic "hero" who lacks the ability to garner any sympathy from the reader, crudely cringe worthy sexist, the entire series should be avoided. I got a free copy & feel I was grossly overcharged. Avoid.
This is a cutie continuation of the Dev Haskell Series. Love Dev Haskell and all the other characters in these stories. These books are wonderful, lighthearted and entertaining. Highly recommend this book and the series.
I've read 19 Dev Haskell books in a week. I do not buy books but one of these I've read in a collection of other authors so I have hopes my library can help me find some more. I love this guy but he's so sick driven he's stupid.
Book 3 was great. Dev does his thing and is still lives. I love the parts where he help people even when Maddie does her thing. Tell Louie to turn the coffee machine off before he burns the building down.
I have enjoyed the many Dev Haskell Adventures. I can't say I really like the character but he is what he is. I would like to see some changes in the way the local gangster interacts with the character. It would be nice if Dev got a little more respect.
