For Fans of Honor Harrington and Horatio Hornblower
I love words, but that wasn't always true. I grew up with a talent for numbers, leading me to follow a different path. I went to Annapolis and MIT and became a nuclear physicist at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. Only after I retired was my desire to tell stories reawakened.
In recent years, I have immersed myself in the world of words, drawing on my scientific knowledge and personal experience to shape my writing.
As a scientist, I explored physics and technology, which enabled me to create informative and insightful books, sharing my knowledge with readers who sought to expand their understanding in these areas—contributing to their intellectual growth while satisfying my own passion.
But it was my time as a naval officer that ignited my imagination and propelled me into science fiction. After graduating from the United States Naval Academy and serving on nuclear submarines during both hot and cold wars, I witnessed firsthand the complexities and challenges of military operations that seamen face daily.
This allowed me a unique perspective, which I channeled into creating Henry Gallant and a 22nd-century world where a space officer fought against invading aliens. Through this narrative, I explored the depths of human resilience, the mysteries of space, and the intricacies of military conflict.
My stories let me share the highlights of my journey with you. I hope you enjoy the ride. (www.hpeteralesso.com)
I gave this book 5 stars but please keep in mind that is for all three books together. If I had been reading each book separately, the score would be less. Why? Because I do not think each book could stand on its own without considerable cliffhangers...which I hate. As it is, book 3 ends with a sort of cliffhanger. Just my opinion.
Following the trials of the hero kept the trilogy in hand for many hours at a time. Some repetition and a few parts where more detail would have been nice, although this did not detract from a well written and thoughtful story. Unfortunately many small issues with the science of space detract from an otherwise good story.
If there had not been so many editorial errors, I would have given this book 5 stars. Every highlight I have in the book has to do with errors that needed correcting.
The story itself is interesting with the premise of a future with pilots that have been genetically engineered in order to interface with the AI programs running the spacecraft. Henry has not been genetically enhanced, but has a natural genetic mutation that makes him able to interface in a way that is beyond the abilities of the artificially enhanced pilots. He is the odd man out. For this reason, he's a bit like Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer and has difficulty forming relationships with the majority of the people in his career field.
I enjoyed the descriptions of New Annapolis. I'm familiar with old Annapolis and could identify with the author's description of the area and some of the place names. Some of the technical terms and descriptions dealing with the battles got a little beyond me but I did recognize some things mentioned that were a part of my husband's days as an electronic warfare officer.
The romance could get a little frustrating. Henry can be dense when it comes to relationships. It left an opening for a growing relationship with Alaina who is living on an earthlike planet named Elysium. All the people on Elysium were victims of kidnap or descendants of victims who had been kidnapped and transferred to Elysium from a Ceres-asteroid mining company 50 years earlier by the alien Titans. Alaina is an activist on Elysium, which is governed by Cyrus Wolfe and his cronies.
The Titans are a methane breathing alien race that is unable to communicate with humans. Their communication is done through prime numbers and an ability to see them as particular shapes, colors etc. Henry Gallant is the only one capable of translating their language at any level.
Henry's nemesis, other than Titans, is Anton Neumann. Newmann is anxious to prove that Henry is unable to best him at anything. His father is a member of the 1% and manipulates circumstances to keep his son on top.
In the third book, Henry receives his own command of a state-of-the-art ship with a cloaking device and advanced weapons systems. He learns that command carries with it a great responsibility when it comes to the life of your crew. Alesso doesn't give magical solutions to problems. Gallant must face the hard choices and the failures those choices carry with them.
Henry Gallant is a Natural, meaning he’s one of a very few humans not genetically enhanced. He’s also a mutation in that his brain has been able to interface on a higher level that even genetically modified humans! His abilities aren’t understood, or even trusted by most serving officers, but his ability to out think and motivate his men comes from his selfless dedication to protecting the UP, whatever circumstances. Taking one impossible mission after another, Gallant fights prejudice and jealousy from fellow officers threatened by his selflessness! Each book has been well-written with great characters and plenty of action! What more could you expect from Hornblower’s mentee?
Alesso tells a good story. The characters are engaging. The plot moves along at a good pace. I couldn't give it five stars because these books seriously need to be proofread/edited before release. There are multiple instances of sentences lacking crucial words or random words dropped into the middle of them. There are nonsensical shifts in tense that make it an onerous task to read this book. I honestly hope the author hires an editor before volume 5 comes out.
I enjoyed reading the first 3 books in the Henry Gallant Saga. The title character learns and develops well in the series. His military career is well considered, but his personal life is less defined through the narrative. The dichotomy of his professional success and his personal setbacks is too drastic. The other factors that impact the prejudice he has to overcome is an interesting reflection on society now and in the future.
Yes this is a novel. A work of fiction. That being said, the characters did what military members have done since the beginning of time, make that ultimate sacrifice for the greater good. The main character, Henry Gallant, had the duty to order his men, even when it exposed them to clear danger. And the character Gabriel, well, it was his duty to try his best to complete his orders. Did he do his duty? Or did he fail? Read and find out.
I think the author has melded some great personal experience into this series. He keeps it busy while developing characters while the world building is often cookie-cutter - nothing overly adventurous and its ‘familiar’. My gripes are that with just about every cliffhanger you know who is going to win. That tends to make our hero a male ‘Mary Sue’ and to me this series is more the bridge between YA and adult SF. Well scripted action and adventure wise. Interesting but not awesome.
Excellent storylines with a deep detailed background
I enjoyed the characters and their development through the series. The adversaries seem to still have some depth we have not yet seen. With the exception of one recycled fight scene, I found the content novel and entertaining.
I knew from the start that it was written by someone who served. The action was clear and descriptive. I appreciated the discussions of the science around stealth technology and dark matter used for fusion.
Gallant is likeable in an idealistic kind of way.
I gave it 5 stars because I am rooting for the underdog to win in this series.
These 3 books were exceptionally written. The main characters were easily to follow with many adventures of Harry as a "Natural.". I highly recommended this book.
I loved all 3 of these books! Henry was a wonderful character! He had to fight predigest the whole way. He wasn’t rich nor did he have the right dna to be such a formidable fighter.
There is Nothing Special about these Books. Right now there are Numerous very similar Science Fiction Book series being written. I didn't find the Story very interesting and none of the Characters were memorable.
#1 Midshipman Henry Gallant in Space. Henry is a space officer, aboard a naval vessel near Jupiter. It's his two year apprenticeship stint after leaving the Space Academy. Henry, is different than other pilot in that time. He is the outcast amongst his fellow midshipmen, because of it. Why, and what makes him different, well, you are best to read the author's rendition of this tale, to find out. I am looking forward to more in this series.
#2 Lieutenant Henry Gallant
Henry, now a Lieutenant, and assigned to a new FTL ship design, which is on it's virgin voyage. One of his superior officers is Neumann, the same as in the previous episode. However, Neumann's fiance is non other than Kelsey, the young woman we also encountered in the previous story. So, they have reached the very edge of the galaxy, and transferred from warp sped, to approach a cluster of moons. One being earth life in appearance. However, there are a few surprises waiting for them, and a very interesting tale unfolds.
#3 Henry Gallant and the Warrior
Henry, off course, gets a little torn up, and his heart is again put at risk, but his heroics save the day, in many different ways Henry has been placed in command of stealth ship, "Warrior", and given special orders to spy on the two known sites that the enemy now resided. It's another political minefield, and then the stealth missions, where now Henry isn't risking his life, but his whole crew, the prototype of the latest technology and eventually the people on home planets, if he fails. Yes, real nail biter!
