Winnie The Pooh's Thinking Spot #7

What Good Are Bugs? Helpful Insects

Rate this book
Pooh and his friends learn how insects are helpful to people and plants.

Winnie the Pooh's Thinking Spot is a brand new series that explores the curious questions young children ask about the world around them.

Pooh and his friends wander through the Hundred-Acre Wood discovering all kinds of things such as nocturnal animals (Vol. 15 Why Aren't You Asleep?), how plants grow (Vol. 9 How Does Your Garden Grow?), and gravity (Vol. 3 Why Don't things Fall Up?). Each story incorporates simple scientific facts while examining how young children learn through listening, questioning, observing, comparing, and experimenting. And every story ends with a hands-on activity for parents and children to do together.

A summer picnic is interrupted by swarms of ants, mosquitoes and gnats so Pooh and his friends decide they must make a sign asking all bugs to leave the Hundred-Acre Wood. But Rabbit and Christopher Robin point out that some insects are useful for helping gardens grow and making honey and basically tell everyone to suck it up and take some bites and stings for the greater good.

No mention of cholera or even a few suggestions of how to have a peaceful picnic. More pro-bug propaganda out of the Disney corporation! (See also: Disney Bugs In June (Read With Pooh, All Year Through) Collection by Sarah Albee.)

(My Pooh Project: I love Winnie the Pooh, and so does my wife. Having a daughter gave us a chance to indoctrinate her into the cult by buying and reading her every Pooh book we came across. How many is that? I’m going to count them this year by reading and reviewing one every day and seeing which month I finally run out. Track my progress here:

Perfect way to integrate literature before a science lesson. Could be used before a lesson on bugs. This cute "Pooh" book shows how bugs aren't always "bad or gross."
