Stir, Laugh, Repeat by Martha A. Cheves is an old-fashioned cookbook, full of recipes like your mother used to make; the recipes are practical, easy and made with everyday ingredients. This is not a book filled with overly fancy, posh recipes that will break the budget; this Martha writes for the ordinary, everyday cook.
The book has a simple layout, easy to understand instructions and is filled with appetizing recipes; the author’s culinary art is a lovely hodgepodge of sweets, dinners, veggie dishes and tasty nibbles. You get a range of yummy dessert delights from Banana Pudding to Key Lime Pie and mouth-watering main meals such as Red Beans and Rice with Smoked Sausage or Baked Spaghetti. And peppered throughout the book are assorted savouries such as Creamy Potato Salad, Meatloaf Muffins, Sticky Biscuits, and Monkey Bread.
Each recipe comes accompanied with a helpful and engaging explanation, with comments and background any cook can appreciate, and some come with useful tips and variations. They are not excessively time consuming, and easily lend themselves to adaptation (a beneficial thing when you have dietary restrictions as I do).
Stir, Laugh, Repeat is an excellent cookbook, for beginner cooks to the more experienced, and one I recommend.

Martha Cheves has a cookbook that I recently purchased.
I do a lot of cooking and consequently, I read a lot of cookbooks. All of them have many complicated recipes calling for a lot for ingredients. I always assumed that was the way of the cook. Until I got a copy of Martha Cheves' cook book Stir, Laugh, Repeat.
This cookbook specializes in simple recipes that should find favor with working couples who haven't the time or energy to cook complicated recipes. Martha's recipes call for pre-packaged ingredients that could be stocked in advance and used as the need arises.
As an example, Martha has a chicken and rice recipe that has similarities to the Spanish classic Arroz con Pollo, one that I make a lot. I use chicken, rice, onions, peppers, tomatoes, broth, saffron and other spices. It takes twenty minutes of prep work and an hour of stovetop cooking; adding ingredients, stirring etc. Martha's recipes calls for chicken and a prepackaged box of saffron rice and a few other ingredients with almost no preparation time and less than a half-hour in the oven.
All in all, this cookbook should find favor with many busy families and others who aren't thrilled by cooking but like to eat.

What a delightful cookbook this is! Martha A Cheves provides the reader with so many wonderful recipes without swamping the average cook with a host of whisks, double boilers, strainers, mixing bowls, thermometers, pastry brushes and icing bags. These are simple, tasty recipes for family, friends and for parties.

However, I truly fell in love with all of the little tips and stories added to these marvelous dishes. Who wouldn’t appreciate all of this great advice? Personable, funny, and heart warming, these small slices of life added greatly to the appeal of this book and made me feel much closer to the author herself. Stir, Laugh, Repeat is getting a prime spot on my shelf of cookbooks. I’m certain it’s going to get a lot of use.

Stir, Laugh & Repeat

Like many noncooks, I have a distinct yearning for the taste of yester-year. Martha has compiled a cookery book of recipes that appeal to our palette as well as our memories. I hate recipes where I have to know what is what and where to find it and which wine to serve with it. All of Martha's recipes are simple and the ingredients easy to find. I wish I had read this book when I was young. I got married at 18 and didn't know how to boil eggs. Now I'm 63, I don't boil eggs because I go to McDonald's just to get out of the house. I do love deviled eggs but hate peeling them. I wasted so many eggs trying to get a pretty little container for my fillings. Thanks to Martha's tips after each recipe, I now know, "While the egg is still hot, place a paper towel on the counter and with the palm of your hand roll the egg around until most of the shell is cracked. It peels in a snap." Another fact I learned was "When a recipe calls for a baking dish, it's referring to glass not metal. When it calls for a baking pan, it's referring to metal.

Some of my favorite recipes brought back memories of my mom's cooking. My favorites were:

Breakfast bars
Potato soup
No bake cookies
Monkey bread
Cracker bars

One recipe I am going to try soon is her Meatloaf Muffins. Many of us have cut down a lot on meat products but still crave the taste and energy we get from meat. I think the following recipe is a great way to sneak a little meat into our diet.

Meatloaf Muffins
1 lb. extra lean ground beef (90-905% lean)
1 6-oz. pkg. stuffing mix
1 C. water

Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Mix meat, stuffing mix, and water blending well. Press into 12 muffin cups lined with cupcake liners. With a spoon make an indentation in the center of each. Spoon in flavors of your choice. Bake 30 minutes or until meatloaves are cooked thoroughly. Top with cheese and bake until cheese melts (optional).

Suggested flavors:
Garlic
BBQ
Onions
Peppers
Worcestershire
A-1
Salsa

I'm going to leave you with one last tip I really liked. "Bury avocados in flour to hasten their ripening." What a great tip! This is a five star book worth keeping handy in the kitchen. My thanks to Martha A. Cheves for sharing her wit, her knowledge, and her expertise in concocting recipes we can all enjoy for years to come.

I never though I’d write a review of a cookery book. Ask any of my family—I’m not exactly an expert in the kitchen. Though, of course, they should take at least some of the blame. It’s hard to produce expert meals when you have so many conflicting requirements. Over Christmas there was me (no gluten), spouse (likes the texture of “real”—i.e. wheat-based—cooking), mother (no fresh fruit, under-cooked veg or spice), son #1 (nothing boring), son #2 (vegetarian, no nuts), son #3 (meat and two veg), and dog (anything and everything). At least the dog was easy to please.

But Martha Cheves’ cookbook, despite so many of the recipes including packets and mixes (mostly with gluten), or meat (not vegetarian), is the perfect book for me. In this modern world where so many of us are allergic to one thing or another, cooking is all too often a question of sticking to the hypo-allergenic diet cook-book, or changing better-known recipes to suit. Martha is a cook who espouses substitution, and her book is the perfect stepping stone between the exotic ingredients of specialist recipes and the world of do-it-yourself.

It’s also the perfect book just to sit down and read for ideas and entertainment. I don’t usually laugh while reading a cook book, but some of Martha’s culinary tales will have me smiling every time I go shopping. (I shall never look at a turkey the same way again!)

And it’s the perfect book for someone who’s not quite sure how a cook book works. For me, being English, there are many unseen pitfalls in American cooking, from how you measure a cupful of sugar (we use weights), to what you use instead of greaseproof paper. Martha answers these questions and more in tips scattered throughout the book, again, rewarding reading from cover to cover.

After finishing this book, you won’t just know where to look for a good recipe, but you’ll have the confidence to change the recipe according to what’s in your cupboard. Cooking becomes an exercise in creativity, instead of a lesson in how well-prepared you are. And I look forward to stirring Martha’s ideas, laughing as I change them, and repeating with many variations for years to come.

COOKING WITH THE OTHER MARTHA!

I grew up with "from scratch" cooking. Both my grandmother and my mother spent hours in the kitchen to produce their meals the only way they knew how--from scratch. This, of course, is how they've taught us children to cook. But don't we all have better things to do than spend hours in the kitchen kneading, waiting for the dough to rise, cutting the shortening into the flour until it looks like little peas? I know I do. I've published one novel and am currently working on a book of short stories as well as novel #2. I'm involved with family and community. With spring in the air, I don't even want to be indoors, but want to go biking, hiking, and spending time outdoors with friends.

This is why cooking “the other” Martha's way, the Martha A. Cheves's way, has been joyfully liberating. In her cookbook, "STIR, LAUGH, REPEAT," she lists 100 recipes for cooks of all ages and varying experience. Many of her recipes are quick; all are easy and delectable! And she won't make you stand in the corner for using canned peas & carrots, and pre-made pie shells, as in her chicken pot pie. Her biscuits made with self-rising flour are light and fluffy, the secret ingredient being--surprise--MAYONNAISE! Anyone who can cook noodles can make her Tuna Melt Casserole. Sunday, I whipped up my favorite of her desserts, her wonderful Key Lime Pie for a family dinner. It took me all of five minutes to get the pie into the oven. STIR, LAUGH, REPEAT INDEED! And thank you, Martha, for unchaining me from the stove and for making cooking easy as well as just plain fun! (How do you like that, Martha Stewart?)

Along with her recipes, Martha gives you her life stories of how she discovered a recipe or when she first made a particular dish. These stories, along with her helpful hints, are sprinkled throughout her book. In this way, I've gotten to know Martha's mom, her sister, her friends, and many of the people in her life. Thank you Martha for sharing your recipes, your wisdom, and your joy in life!

Stir, Laugh, Repeat
By Martha A. Cheves

“Stir, Laugh, Repeat” by Martha A. Cheves is not only a great cookbook, it is a fun read. The first day I received the book, I perused it to find a recipe to sample. In reading, I found these recipes, some for all meals and snacks, easy and quick. A recipe that takes only one paragraph to tell how to throw all the ingredients together for a scrumptious dish is my kind of book. Then Martha gives a little history for each recipe about how that food was used in her own cooking at home. But that’s not all. Following every recipe is a Tip for the cook. One of my favorites was:

“When my three kids were young, we would have a Mystery TV Dinner Night. Each night when I cooked dinner, before it went on the table, I would take a plastic sectioned plate and put a full serving of everything on the plate, wrap it in plastic wrap and then tightly wrap it in foil and put it into the freezer. On Mystery Night, everyone would go to the freezer and take out a dish. You couldn’t peek. Each plate would be microwaved and that was your meal for the night. You may have country fried steak, spaghetti, fish, even chili. It was fun watching the kids open their meals. They were never disappointed because I would make sure it was filled with food they liked.”

Martha Cheves knows how to feed her family and have fun, too, and now shares her recipes with us. Oh yes, the recipe I chose to make first was the Strawberry Nut Crunch. I made it with Macadamia nuts. It was so delightful. I will make it again, and enough of it for about 50 people at a big celebratory potluck. I’ll also be taking this delightful book to share with others.

Review by Mary Deal, author of “The Tropics,” “The Ka,” the award winning “River Bones,” and “Down to the Needle.”

Here's a review for Martha A. Cheves book, "Stir, Laugh, Repeat".

Ms. Cheves wrote not just a cookbook, but a book to cook by. You'll find a little bit of everything in this recipe filled book, from her famous "Banana Puddin'" to her home-made "Chow-Chow".

Ms. Cheves packs plenty of cooking savy in this delightful book that has a hundred differnt little cooking tips that will have you delighted, to short little tidbits of stories that will make you remember what you are cooking.

Most cookbooks are just that, a cookbook, with very little else. But I highly recommend Martha's book.
She has a way of making you feel more at home in your own kitchen. She makes her recipes not only
scrumptious, but easy and practical on the young mother with a brood to cook for.

From her "Hashborwn Omlett" to her Pecan muffins you are bound to find something in this book to try.
I highly recommend checking this one out folks. Ms. Cheves has outdone herself and still she manages to tell a story that will make you chuckle while you cook.

This is a recipe book you won't want to miss. Chock full of great ideas that any one could try. And some down home favorites you won't want to miss, "Fried Pickles" to "Boiled Cabbage" Hmm, my mother used to make this, just like this and I never knew her recipe. And hey, don't forget the "Collards". Martha Cheves has it all in "Stir, Laugh, and Repeat". Don't miss this one!

When it comes to creating recipes, I have little imagination so I turn to cookbooks for ideas. My problem with many of them, though, is that the recipes are either too complicated or the ingredients too hard to find. So it was with great pleasure that I discovered Stir, Laugh, Repeat by Martha A. Cheves. Her straightforward recipes reflect her southern U.S. background and use simple, affordable ingredients. Cheves provides a number of money-saving tips which is greatly appreciated.

If you love cheese and white chocolate (not together) you’ll love this book because the author’s a fan of both and features these items in several recipes. As a bonus, Cheves also offers personal stories and a practical tip with each recipe, which gives the book a personal touch.

My only quibble is that it’ll be hard to keep the book open when I try some of the recipes, which is why I usually prefer coil bound cookbooks. Also, there are a couple of ingredients such as Parker House rolls that aren’t available here in Canada so I’ll have to find a substitute. Meanwhile, I really need to start on that banana pudding recipe!

Finding Joy While Playing in the Kitchen

By Martha A Cheves

ISBN: 978-60462-818-0

I found this to be a most enjoyable cookery book. Not only are the recipes delicious, but also they are so very easy to follow and I love the stories that appear at the end of each recipe.

One of the things that appealed to me was that Martha uses basic ingredients, the kind you would find in your store cupboard at home. There is no need for a trip to the high-class food stores to find some exotic ingredient for a special recipe that you know you will never use again. Yet the end result is just as delicious as anything you might have spent hours working over a hot stove for.

Also Martha rounds off each recipe with a Tip. Sometimes the tips are about the preceding recipe, while others are there simply for good measure. Either way, they are both useful and sensible and made me wonder ‘why on earth didn’t I think of that?’

This is a cookery book I will refer to over and over again.

Cooking: It is something we all have to do from time to time. So why not find joy while playing around in the kitchen. I loved how Martha starts out her old-fashioned cook book with a recipe for banana puddin. This of my favorite desserts that brings back so many good memories. Scattered about this wonderful cook book are tips that will help anyone (especially a beginner) cook fabulous dishes. This is one book that you will use and want to pass on to your future generations. Reading this was a sweet way to end my day. Thanks Martha - I love your suggestions, tips and factual information that we all can use.

My wife and I were vacationing in the Hudson Valley recently and stopped at a quintessential northeastern town for lunch. Afterwards we browsed an antique store where we bought a very old and heavy wooden rolling pin. I thought at the time, what fascinating stories and recipes this antique must hold. Now I've some idea. "Stir, Laugh, Repeat" is a cookbook that delivers not only delicious snacks, meals and desserts, but stories behind them--real life events that contribute as much to the experience of preparing the meals as the recipes themselves. Martha Cheves has a refreshing sense of humor, a sweet lady--like having a favorite relative in the kitchen advising you. ("Chuck's Fruit Salad" is a quick fix and a favorite). "Stir, Lauch, Repeat" would make a nice stocking stuffer for anyone you know who'd enjoy a warm and friendly hand in the kitchen.
