Mr. and Mrs. Cutlass are anticipating a hot, dull summer on the ranch, but when their niece and nephew arrive from the city with a young guest, all fear of dullness evaporates. The children are charmed with ranch life and intrigued by the mysterious recurring puddle under the pump and some strange findings in the hayloft. Will they discover a friend or an enemy at the end of the trail?
Rebekah A. Morris has lived her entire life (as of now) in Missouri. Being home educated during her school years was great, except for writing. That was the worst subject (along with math) that she had to do. It wasn't until after she graduated that she discovered the joys and wonder of writing. Now she can't write enough. After spending six years in research and writing, she completed her first book, "Home Fires of the Great War," a 500+ page, historical fiction about home life in the United States and Canada during the First World War. Since then, she has been an avid writer and always has more than one story going on at once because only one story at a time got tiring and dull.
This was a fun story that didn't just take place in the summer but felt like summer, almost like a Christmas story that feels like Christmas, but with summer. The kids' personalities and their conversations, especially with the accent that Kathleen and Patrick had, was fun to read. I would have liked to find out more about Angelina, but I didn't feel disappointed when the story ended, just a bit curious.
Copied from my review of the Pirates of Rocky Crag Bay collection, and by far my favorite story from that collection...
Things were set up for a nice little story with a hint of mystery, and then the kids arrived--and melted me into an adoring puddle with their Irish accents. <3 I think I could have loved a story about them watching paint dry, as long as they were talking while watching it! Don't worry, the story itself was better than that. ;) The only thing I would have liked better was to get a bit of more of Angelina's story and background. But those accents!!! <3<3<3
I wrote the summary for this book. All opinions are my own.
This was a sweet, quick read with beautiful descriptions, sweet characters, and great accents. I did feel like Angelina's presence in the story was brushed over and not explained very well, but I didn't mind too much. She was so sweet. And I loved the twins. I enjoyed reading this short story!
3 stars & 3/10 hearts. This is a sweet little story, with real, interesting characters. :) Angelina is such a dear! And Pat & Kathleen have the best relationship.
A Favourite Beautiful Quote: “A rosy gleam from the setting sun seemed to make their pink room glow with a soft light.” A Favourite Humorous Quote: “‘If you are up here,’ Patrick spoke bravely though his knees were shaking, ‘we wish you’d come out just, for we brought you more cookies and—‘ “‘We’d like to be your friends if you aren’t a bad person entirely,’ Kathleen finished. “‘Kath!’ Patrick hissed reprovingly.”
