Alice and Raika continue their showdown with Mira and her cronies. After a couple unexpected twists of fate things calm down, we get some more background on the nature of the Cosmofs, but soon things are Cosmof to the races once again.
Now that everything has firmly shifted to the past, you’d think that Cosmo Familia might settle down into a rhythm, but it merely downshifts from total chaos (alien duplicates who show up to send our heroine into the past to meet the originals they’re copying but twenty years prior might have been a bit much) to a more reserved chaos.
This book is strange. Sometimes it’s good strange, sometimes it’s bad strange. The art is quite delightful - this book churns through costume designs at a rate beyond any manga I’ve read - and when it goes into action mode it’s easier to follow than many stories in this vein.
Characterization is still weird to me. Oddly the most straightforward characters end up being Alice, which makes sense, and (of all people) the house servant Imori, who is slightly psychotic but consistently so (he lands the book’s best line of dialogue during his very, very well done section with Mira).
Mira is here to be your typical barely-contained crazy villain, though there’s certainly context for it at least. She gets this volume’s most gruesome moments both as a giver and a taker.
After that things get murkier. Allegiances are fragile, people are too trusting, and things shift all over at a moment’s notice, a little more quickly than I find believable. I don’t trust Raika and I swear that’s not just because the book is really into her crushing on her own daughter now that they’re the same age.
Spica is also very murky at this point, to say nothing of her having the worst battle costume thus far (that top has to be attached with super glue to keep her from flashing everybody in the story). The irony that she has a far better one during a flashback panel is not lost on me.
There’s also a lot of weird science (from its heart and from its hands), still more bizarre outfits (everything going on with Mira at the end is straight WTF), and a strange tone that had the fluffy Cosmofs but also examples of torture, near-bondage, and the occasional spray of blood (not necessarily surprising given its pedigree). The story still can’t shake the feeling of making parts of it up as it goes either.
So, I don’t love this series but I ended up on the side of liking it. The story is wobbly, but the art is good, it has a couple solid moments and it’s certainly improved enough over the first volume that I am more than a little interested to see where it goes next. Great it was not, but enjoyable it was.

2020 Read #670
Wow. Okay. Somehow this manga went off the rails even more than the first volume. Lots of odd stuff going on! I’d just stick to Hanokage’s manga adaptation of Madoka Magica, but that’s just me...
