Nancy Pelosi: Political Powerhouse by Anna Leigh. Lerner, 2020. $32 (hc), 10 (pb). 9781541577466

BUYING ADVISORY: EL, MS - ESSENTIAL

AUDIENCE APPEAL: AVERAGE

Nancy Pelosi was born into a politically active family, but it wasn’t until she was almost 50 that she ran for and won her first seat in the House of Representatives. Now she has been Speaker of the House twice.

Leigh’s information on Pelosi’s career is almost up to the minute! A very clear, succinct bio with plenty of info for a short biography project.

Nancy Pelosi: Political Powerhouse is one in a series of biographies about public figures written for elementary school aged readers. It collapses a decades-long career into less than 50 pages and does a solid job of humanizing someone that kids might only see in short snippets on the evening news. That said, the book largely shies away from controversy or any sort of gray area. There's never any suggestion in its pages, for instance that there are policies and acts for which Pelosi might be celebrated by some and reviled by others. Moreover, there's no discussion of infighting within Pelosi's own party over a host of issues. I'll ponder it some more, but what I am left wondering is how to present children with a more nuanced version of politics and politicians that includes a less black-and-white, simplified version of things.
